How to improve my living room (with pic)

What would you do to make this living room a bit more cosy/colourful and less ‘wood’? I feel like it needs a mirror but more wood or just glass would look a bit severe.

Please note I have small kids so big ornaments etc not practical! Would need to be things they can’t reach/destroy. Please ignore the mess, it’s been an indoor play kind of day. Bonus points for anyone who links to specific items as I have zero power of imagination when people describe things.

Thanks in advance!

Character - the room is completely devoid of it. Even just having a cornice around the top of the walls would give it a much needed boost...I am one of these people who has no idea how to dress so I always stick to the same things which others have said look good on me, however, with my home it's another story, I know what I like, I know what works, and I do it with confidence.

There's a world of difference between a room stuffed full of old (or even new) crap, and one that's furnished with things from all different decades that blend in and mean something to the people who live there. My home is a million miles from whatever fashion is in fashion, but then it doesn't look old fashioned either as it was never fashionable to begin with.

Having your own rules helps, for example I will not have anything other than white on ceilings, doors, and all the woodwork. I like a textured surface on walls and ceilings, but only one colour and no patterns - I like my pictures to stand out and take stage, rather than blur into the wall.

I also allow myself only one wood colour per room.

Curtains to your windows would make a massive difference too...the window looks naked as it is.

Curtains would add some texture, pattern and colour. Would soften the lines of the window.

highly recommend Kukoon for affordable rugs

From chat gpt. Your ceiling light is too harsh. You need a rug. Personally I would add some dusky pink in there.

I agree with a pale pink to cosy it up and soften it a bit

FeistyFrankie · 22/02/2026 22:24

Paint the walls a nice neutral tone, then decorate with different size and shape picture frames, or put up some artwork (choose pieces that have colors that tie in with the rest of the room)
Add cushions with colors that pop (and also feature in any pictures hanging on the wall)
Rug on the floor - something simple that adds texture, but avoid any busy designs that distract and pull attention away from the walls
Maybe some cute rattan or fabric storage boxes to again add texture

You want an assortment of materials to create warmth and visual interest, and one big focal point.

Don’t know if your living room would allow a layout shuffle, but I would have the sofa against the window, swap the blinds for linen curtains, paint the TV bench and flip the TV to the right hand side.

And go with softer rounded shapes to offset the space - arched mirrors, round coffee tables, etc. Have different textures going on.

Also a practical patterned washable rug. And a big fake plant from IKEA / H&M etc. since your kiddo likes soil too much haha.

If you can paint the walls (not sure if you’re renting), then go for it! You could add panelling too and make it really cosy. Sage would be really nice.

Love that lampshade!

HelloRose · 22/02/2026 22:43

A rug (neutral colours - good size - one that the front legs of your sofa sit on). Look at Ruggable.
A small round coffee table
Change your ceiling lampshade

MarxistMags · 22/02/2026 22:51

A nice cosy rug and some throws.

IAmKerplunk · 22/02/2026 22:55

Op - please update with any changes! Would love to see what you do. First stop - change ceiling lightbulb, made a massive difference in my lounge.

A nice cosy rug and some throws.

I have throws but they never stay ‘casually but artistically’ draped on my sofas 😂 they do make a massive difference though

whattheysay · 22/02/2026 22:59

You just need more stuff in it it looks totally bare and stark atm.
A rug, some art on the walls, some plants and curtains to dress the window you don’t have to shut them
Dont go for colourful, or mirrors, and change that lampshade!

PurpleFlower1983 · 22/02/2026 23:00

Paint it, not a feature walk, the whole room. Then art and a rug.

FlorenceBlack · 22/02/2026 23:01

You could still keep the blind at the window but have curtains as well, don’t have to draw them they’d be purely for decoration and visual interest. Soft furnishings help absorb sound too, think about noisy restaurants, they tend to have hard floors, no curtains at windows, no tablecloths.

Artwork, make sure you go for something big, or group smaller items close together. Too often people get the proportions wrong and there’s a piddly frame looking lost on a big expanse of wall. If you’re not sure how it might look use paper/ newspaper/ reverse side of wallpaper samples cut to the approximate size of any art you’re considering and blu-tack them to the wall.

Chosemyownmarriedtobenamebutneverhadit · 22/02/2026 23:03

Orange cushions. There you go. Sorted.

TheFormidableMrsC · 22/02/2026 23:09

Loads of pictures, a large rug, lots of plants.

Poppins2016 · 22/02/2026 23:15

Slightly off-topic, but "mess"?! Nope. That's not mess. You should see my living room after 3 small children have tornadoed through 😂

On a more serious note, I'd add a nice big rug and some pictures or wall hangings. Not a mirror - you need to add some colour and not just reflect the wall back at itself...

goingtotown · 22/02/2026 23:16

Change the lamp & overhead light, you need pictures a large rug coffee table & colourful cushions.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 22/02/2026 23:20

How are you all putting pictures into chat gpt?

Knittedfairies2 · 22/02/2026 23:22

The answer is always artwork and plants.

Literally take a photo of whatever it is you want advice on then upload it. Click on the + to add a photo. And tell it what you want. When I did the ops lounge I put to keep the flooring and sofas but make it warm and cosy

Resprayingmyaferraris · 22/02/2026 23:26

Op you need a mix ....MIX of shelves on the wall or one one and some pictures in groups a mix of family pics and art work AND mirrors !

If the room is small add two mirrors either side and shelves and pics !
Homely ,larger and unique.

Ps we have objects and lots of stuff never had an issue

Resprayingmyaferraris · 22/02/2026 23:27

@Knittedfairies2 and ....drum roll

Mirror ! They reflect light and make the space look bigger and more interesting ( if they have things to reflect )

Travelfairy · 22/02/2026 23:29

Art on the wall, colourful rug, tall plant

Maia77 · 22/02/2026 23:33

Also many rugs are easily washable.
