How to improve my living room (with pic)

What would you do to make this living room a bit more cosy/colourful and less ‘wood’? I feel like it needs a mirror but more wood or just glass would look a bit severe.

Please note I have small kids so big ornaments etc not practical! Would need to be things they can’t reach/destroy. Please ignore the mess, it’s been an indoor play kind of day. Bonus points for anyone who links to specific items as I have zero power of imagination when people describe things.

Thanks in advance!

Pictures. You need pictures on the walls.

FlorenceBlack · 22/02/2026 18:43

Artwork on the walls, or a couple of slimline shelves that the children can’t reach. Cushions in a different colour to brown.

MyCatTibby · 22/02/2026 18:44

Colourful rug, green maybe, pictures and cushions to match/tie in with rug

Painted edge mirror would be lovely. I can't see if you have any colour elsewhere in the room you might want to consider, but here are some possibilities:

Sorry for ridiculous links!

I'd also suggest a colourful rug. Try to get the mirror and the rug to go together, so eg one of the colours in the rug is roughly the same as the mirror.

GreenSedan · 22/02/2026 18:44

Pictures on the wall. Photos in small frames. A couple of large pot plants. Some books or ornaments.

It just looks a bit unlived in at the moment.

Wigeon · 22/02/2026 18:44

A rug, curtains at the windows rather than blinds, and pictures on the walls. Possibly also a mirror on one wall? You could pick up quite a lot cheaply at Ikea. Would a coffee table on the rug as well be annoying if you have small children?

slaintebab · 22/02/2026 18:45

Definitely pictures and maybe a rug

AngelsandAliens · 22/02/2026 18:45

I would mostly say a rug , a rug really warms up the room in appearance and does actually warm up the room . I feel the wooden floor without one looks cold and like something is missing , but I do love a rug 🤣

47andahalf · 22/02/2026 18:45

A colourful rug. And ensure it's bigger than you think it needs to be.

Three circular mirrors in different sizes not complementary material and colour frames. TK Maxx is budget friendly here.

youalright · 22/02/2026 18:46

Definitely pictures on wall and a rug. Its a nice room just a bit plain

MiddleAgedDread · 22/02/2026 18:46

A colourful rug, coffee table, a mirror to reflect the light and some photos or art on the walls. I suspect the lampshade is making the light feel colder too.

itsthetea · 22/02/2026 18:47

Colour on the walls or rug and brighter cushions

Mauro711 · 22/02/2026 18:47

Nice, big, soft rug, artwork on the walls and a coffee table. Is it possible to move things around? I don’t like that the TV is in front of the window.

unknownwonder · 22/02/2026 18:48

Pictures and rug are the first things that stand out to me.

Upload these photos to chat gpt and ask them to design your living room and mention what kind of style/things you want, I did this and it’s so much easier getting a visual idea

Edit: could you swap the sofa and tv so the tv isn’t infront of the window as well?

youalright · 22/02/2026 18:48

If you put the photos into chatgpt they can help you design a room

SliceofTosst · 22/02/2026 18:48

A rug and another brighter third colour added to the cushions. It changed my living area.

Arlanymor · 22/02/2026 18:48

Artwork on the walls, colourful cushions, a long landscape mirror on one of the walls to reflect the light.

🤣🤣 you beat me to it I've designed my whole house and garden with chatgpt

Moltencheese · 22/02/2026 18:49

Art on the walls (Pinterest for ideas perhaps)
lightshade - maybe in a natural material

Ballondoor · 22/02/2026 18:49

Less big telly, more art, rugs, plants and books.

momager22 · 22/02/2026 18:49

I’d add a huge rug, a leafy green plant and that light shade doesn’t go with the room.
As you’ve got a grey sofa I would steer away from red - i just don’t think red and grey work together.
I think you’ll need to keep colours fairly neutral such as sage or olive green

It’s so good isn’t it! I do it for everything now 😂

Interiordesign · 22/02/2026 18:50

Thanks all. I got the lamp from Facebook a few weeks ago but.. it’s more wood. Maybe I should’ve got something with a brighter colour lampshade?

Youngest is potty training but will get a rug when he’s finished 😬

I like the ‘set of 3 mirrors’ idea - off to google

I was thinking sage/olive/ochre, but didn’t know if that was too dull but I agree it would soften. I’ll add the plant when youngest is past the point of seeing soil as an attractive plaything.

A lovely rug, some great art works on the walls. Maybe a lovely mirror on a wall. I don’t know if it helps and it depends what you want but Dunelm are usually good for pictures etc

My friend has a leather sofa with this - the larger version and it is stunning. She has put fairy lights over it and on the other wall she has several smaller leaf prints in A4 from Dunelm and a lovely mirror and a nice clock. Nice throws will add warmth.

the photo attached is one online and not my friends - hers is a brown leather sofa but they have soft green and grey throws on it and a rug that is brown, green, grey. Honestly I go around to her lounge and it is amazing and cozy
