Ate raw oysters. Why am I such an idiot?!

I know the UK coast is being pumped full of raw sewage, so what the hell was I thinking?!!

Now I’m as sick as a dog (well not my dog, he’s snoozing right to me quite happily) and feel like death.

I’m an idiot. 🤢

You poor thing. I hope you feel better by tomorrow. Being sick from seafood is the worst!

Arlanymor · 20/02/2026 21:55

I had that last year and it was the pits. I really sympathise. For someone reasons oyster-related sickness seems to be projectile - it cannot wait to leave your body can it?! It took me about 12 hours to feel normal again. Hope you recover very, very soon.

MissSophiaGrace · 20/02/2026 21:55

Oh no. Gosh how awful. Where did you get them from exactly?

Alpacajigsaw · 20/02/2026 21:58

Are most oysters not farmed and/or
not from the UK? Lots of restaurants sell them and I imagine wouldn’t if people might get shit poison off them.

Hope you feel better soon x

Seafood restaurant in Suffolk. We were away for a few days, and DH and I went out for a belated Valentine’s meal. I had oysters, he did not - I’m the only one ill.

I don’t blame the restaurant, very easy to serve a bad oyster. But I’m not risking them again.

I am sorry. Just make sure you try and keep your fluids up, even if you suck ice cubes.

Possibly because it's often caused by norovirus - very nasty!

You poor thing, @MadameSzyszkoBohusz. I hope you're on the mend soon. Reminds me that it's been a good decade since the last time I ate mussels - a bad bout of food poisoning stays with you!

Oh I didn't know that! Although thank goodness at the time I was only a human fountain at 'one end' as it were!

Flannelfeet · 20/02/2026 22:28

Off topic, but I really hope you are ok? And feeling better?
I went on a road trip with my friends years ago, possibly 20 we ended up at a Loch fyne food festival, we all had a brilliant day with the "posher" people. I was egged on by this big man in tweed to try the fresh lochs oysters..I tried..I nearly choked and spat it out in front of everyone 😳. All posh red faced tweed men were laughing at me.😖 . Theres more to that story and it involves mooning in Dunoon (not me) . We got sent home on the ferry to Gourock and had to make our way home from there.( after the lovely police let us spend the night sleeping in the cells) . Never even gave us porridge, only a bed for the night.

Cheersmedears123 · 20/02/2026 22:57

You’re not an idiot. I bloody love oysters! I hope you feel better soon.

FictionalCharacter · 20/02/2026 23:00

Oysters are filter feeders, their job is to clean the sea by eating shit. And people think it’s a good idea to eat them raw 🤷🏼‍♀️

hewassoungrateful · 20/02/2026 23:02

I’m sorry op, that sounds grim. But I think you’ve been unlucky. I despise oysters and would never eat them, but DH shovels them down at every opportunity. He’s never been poorly. But, like you say, it only takes one bad one! Feel better soon xx

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 20/02/2026 23:04

I am feeling a bit better. I was frequently and violently sick, and it still doesn’t feel like I’m quite done, but nothing has come up in a couple of hours.

I’ve also managed to warm up - I was so, so cold, couldn’t stop shivering. Was in bed in fleecy pyjamas, a heavy dressing gown, a thick down duvet, a hot water bottle, and a warm and supportive spaniel - and I was still completely freezing.

Managed to keep a couple of paracetamol down which seems to have helped with that, at least.

I’m so sorry. I’ve had food poisoning before and it was hell. I hate being sick! I think with raw oysters the risk is getting norovirus from them, so even if they’re fresh and properly prepared, they could have become infected in the sea.
I absolutely love oysters but I’ll probably never be brave enough to eat them again as I’m too paranoid about getting ill.
Drink plenty of water and perhaps get some rehydration sachets. You’ll probably be dehydrated after all that.
Watch something bingeworthy on Netflix. Always the best part of recovery from illness.

honeyfox · 20/02/2026 23:59

I'm so sorry OP! I had a bad few hours last Saturday morning due to 4 or 5 mussels on a seafood linguine, nearly ruined my weekend with a friend who had flown over for a rugby match. Have also had norovirus from mussels on my 30th birthday night out, that was horrendous. Luckily was ok after the couple of oysters I ever had. Hope you feel better tomorrow.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 21/02/2026 10:12

Urgh, I still feel really queasy. Feels like the only reason I haven’t thrown up again is because there’s nothing left in me to come back up.

And every muscle in my body aches! Why is that???

Ilovefoodandwine · 21/02/2026 10:15

I had to sip calpol last time I had food poisoning. Then managed to take codeine later which helped the shifts, shivering and aches.

Nofeckingway · 21/02/2026 10:21

Nothing feels worse than seafood related sickness. Ex ate a seafood pasta dish at a Hilton in Athens on a work trip . I had joined him for the preceding day intending to see the highlights. His only recollection of the Pantheon was the toilets at the entrance . Spent the rest of the time in the hotel room being ill while I amused myself in the gym and spa. Pictures from that time show him looking pure white .

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 21/02/2026 10:24

I love oysters but norovirus is present in something like 70% of them, albeit not always at a dangerous level. You are achy because you have a viral infection, OP. Take paracetamol for the aches and stay hydrated. If you can send someone to the pharmacy for you then get hold of some Dioralyte to sip. If not, drink water with a teaspoon of sugar (or sugary squash) and a pinch of salt. Get well soon.

Nofeckingway · 21/02/2026 10:29

I didn't know that about norovirus in oysters . Is there a way restaurant, etc can test or know ?

Glitchymn1 · 21/02/2026 10:31

Oysters function primarily as natural, ecological cleaners that filter algae, pollutants, and suspended sediment from water to maintain ecosystem health.🤢 Why on earth eat them. It’s no wonder the sea is fucked. They basically filter all the shit lol

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 21/02/2026 10:37

Tbf I’ve had them a lot over the years and never been ill, but it seems my luck has run out.

gruit · 21/02/2026 10:45

had mussels in greece last summer and was violently ill. Never again. The only other time I’ve had food poisoning (in recent years) was prawns. No more seafood for me!

CurlewKate · 21/02/2026 11:00

Bear in mind that once you’ve been made sick by a bad oyster you are more susceptible in the future. I have no idea why-but it’s true….

Yep! The first and only time I had oysters I was so ill I ended up in hospital on a drip being rehydrated. Every other time I’ve eaten anything in the bivalve family I’ve been violently ill - even just trace contamination to the extent I now tell restaurants I’m allergic to ensure I don’t get exposed.
