Hey everyone

this is the original thread that was started for half term:
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5491563-half-term-sen-parents-support-group?page=1

but we’re carrying it on since it’s been helpful

all parents of sen kids are welcome - also those who’s sen kids are now adults!

safe space to vent, share advice, tips and tricks, share good news and bad, and just chit chat and be 🙂

i am a mum of one dd. She’s 6 and is autistic and not yet verbal. It’s just us, no support system so I am thankful for the people on here keeping me company through the journey ❤️

Well done to you and your DD @Dunnowhatimat - she's only 4 isn't she? That's fantastic for a day out without toilet accidents. I hope you're both super proud - what an achievement.

Happy birthday to your DS @Helplessandheartbroke!

Considered it and ruled it out 😂Firstly because she is quite social albeit very much on her own terms, and secondly because she has very strong views about school work happening at school and home time happening at home.

Absolutely fair girl!

Thank you! Yes just gone 4 the end of Jan. We started toileting albeit very slowly since before Christmas. First time ever been out without the 'safety nappy'! Now I think I did end up annoying her bringing her to the toilet every few mins 😂 but sure it all ended well anyways! There were lot of days (more like years) where she couldn't even wear 'normal' clothes (she was in jumpsuits for almost 2 years!) as she'd be in her nappy pulling things out as quick as a flash and my nervous system couldn't handle it. Wasn't sure we'd ever be able to leave her in a pair of pants not to mind no nappy too! Ending today on a high anyways (while simultaneously wondering how I'm going to entertain her all day tomorrow, she's very very high energy 🙈) xx

So apparently Saturday is “pull the bedroom curtain pole out of the wall” night.

Curtains, pole, brackets, the lot. Bye bye curtains.

Now to fashion some sort of window covering that will do until we can get them back up tomorrow.

Happy Saturday!

Must be a Saturday thing - mine did the exact same thing 2 Saturdays ago! Thankfully it was a single window one and it was a wooden pole so the the left knob (🤣🤭) stayed on the wall. How exactly she did this at 4 years old I'm unsure, I had the audacity to take a very quick wee 5 feet away (in the toilet!) so missed it. It's funny now only as I've had a glass of wine, 2 weeks ago I cried I think 😂

His is a triple window, with full size curtains on, 3 brackets.

He’d tried to use the curtains to climb up onto the windowsill, and obviously they’re not going to hold a 9 year who’s in 14 year olds clothes.

Heard the crash and went in to him stood holding them with a “I have fucked up” face. Came over all sheepish, wouldn’t look at me for 10mins 😂

Went in to hang towels at his window for tonight… he was covered in yogurt with all of his clothes off.

What a day 😂😂

Oh no 🙈
Actually now you say that I bet that's what she was also trying to do when she did it. Wouldn't mind - she's very tall for her age why she wants to get even higher I don't know!
Gosh they really are so sensory aren't they?! I made slime earlier from this packet thing (don't ask why, I had notions thinking it was a good idea) DD proceeded to rub it all over her body, clothes and all although they were pulled up to the knees and arms and a 15 min play session turned into 45 mins of cleaning up. The clothes and towel are currently on their second wash 🙈
Solidarity to you!! Xx

mumofoneAloneandwell · 14/03/2026 20:56

If it helps, my dd is naked for some reason, jumping on the bed screaming 'dinosaur' 😄😄😄😄

I'm just having a sit down in my lovely clean living room before I get up to do bedtime 😫😫

He’s just broken his bed throwing himself on it because I wouldn’t let him.. drink toilet water.

At this stage I’m hoping he puts himself to bed 😂

We used to have that, with all things that come in a bottle.

Found him covered in cooking oil once, like he was trying to emulate a frying pan 😂

Helplessandheartbroke · 14/03/2026 22:49

Ooowwww 2 nights ago I had my blinds pulled down! Dh fixed them last night before bed. My bed is next to the window so perfect height but wanted to be higher! Solidarity ladies

mumofoneAloneandwell · 15/03/2026 00:08

Girls my dd is still awake now. She had a huge meltdown over her chicken nuggets with ketchup - not sure what upset her but it lasted about 30 mins

Now im making noodles as she literally has refused 3 meals this afternoon 😫 - I know shes exhausted but can't drop off due to being hungry, but just wont eat 🙃

Happy mother's day to all you fantastic ladies 💖

@mumofoneAloneandwellyou must be so tired! I find sleep deprivation a form of torture! We're currently on a mont of melatonin which is amazing but I'm a bit trepidatious regarding when that finishes!

I've had a mother's day without D's as I had a small op yesterday and pil had him overnight/my mum has him today - I think he's been quite anxious so hopefully a weekend of being spoiled by grandparents will set him right. Fully appreciate how lucky I am to have the support.

Needlenardlenoo · 15/03/2026 13:19

I'm about to put black clothes on and go sing a Requiem with my choir. It always seems such a strange hobby on a sunny day!

I got a mug from Oliver Bonas that I picked out myself and pointed teen towards the cash desk with yesterday with money.

Needlenardlenoo · 15/03/2026 13:20

Get well soon @allthenamesitriedweretaken.

Helplessandheartbroke · 15/03/2026 13:32

@mumofoneAloneandwell I've also done some cleaning now lying on the couch having a chilled day. Bless you getting to sleep at 3! Did you get a lie in?

@allthenamesitriedweretaken hope you recover soon!

@Needlenardlenoo its lashing it down up north!

allthenamesitriedweretaken · 15/03/2026 20:16

I've got a very dysregulated ds back - lots of shouting and tears tonight, very clingy whilst not wanting us anywhere near him... The joys
