Can I see a picture of your family breakfast?

I'm having a bit of a phase of austic DS1 struggling with knowing what to eat so have taken to just shoving everything at it to see what takes. This is working for now.

I'd really love to see what you have for breakfast. We really aren't just a cereal and toast family and all enjoy feeling like we've had a meal to start the day.

Interested in friendly, realistic critiques and easy suggestions without being torn to threads please.

Picture shows... Potato waffles, scrambled egg (almond milk added), chicken, tomatoes, cucumber, apple, grapes and some flapjack.

I'm a toast, or porridge or cereal girl. Sometimes avocado. But can I share two pictures of this weekends hotel breakfast as inspo instead?

Did you cook the potato waffles, they look positively arctic.

Mintyt · 20/02/2026 08:47

I’ve eaten mine, crumpets, butter, honey and cheese and blueberries- delicious

it seems there is too much choice, which could be overwhelming for him @Hagnumber4

Your scrambled eggs are overcooked, but I'd be led by his preferred textures

Hagnumber4 · 20/02/2026 08:53

Potato waffles are cooked. Although not crispy or anything.

DS1 has opted for potato waffles coated with yogurt and flapjack. He will likely pick at the fruit and cucumber/tomato after.

DS2 has gone for the full selection of potato waffle, egg, tomatoes, apple wine grapes.

It's such a tough balance because if you ask DS1...."do you want.....(Insert anything)?" It'll be met with an instant no. The additional choice has been working well for the past couple of weeks but I guess I'm after some tweaks and additions.

We are a gluten free and dairy free household, I should add

We don’t have breakfast together, people get up and leave the house at different times, everyone gets their own breakfast

Eenameenadeeka · 20/02/2026 09:03

Turkish eggs are a fave in my house -greek yoghurt seasoned with garlic and herbs, with poached eggs. Some dip ciabatta bread.

hopspot · 20/02/2026 09:04

Our breakfasts are quick and at different times before we rush off to school / work. Breakfasts like you share are very rare treats.
I have cereal, my DH has a cereal bar at his desk, dc 1 has toast and dc2 has cereal and fruit.

saltandvinegarpringles · 20/02/2026 09:18

Toast, coffee and out the door here.

Clearinguptheclutter · 20/02/2026 09:20

Breakfast together is only a thing for us when away and staying in a hotel

yours sounds good tho

MiddleAgedDread · 20/02/2026 09:28

chicken, fruit, veg and flapjack on the same plate is giving me the ick!!
usual options here are:
cinnamon & raisin bagels
boiled eggs & toast soldiers
porridge
overnight oats
overnight weetabix
cereal
toast or crumpets
pancakes with fruit & yogurt
yogurt with fruit & granola
scrambled eggs on toast/bagel

Asuitablecat · 20/02/2026 09:32

Yoghurt, coffee, out.
Kids either don't have any (teens) or get sugary crap like a waffle, that they can eat on the way to school.

Given time and the choice, I like the avocado/ egg on toast combo.

AdoraBell · 20/02/2026 09:47

I don’t have photos but I made pancakes with bacon with maple syrup and pot with yoghurt, berries and homemade granola. I also do frittata or scrambled eggs either with bacon or vegetables, frequently peppers for my DDs. I can’t eat peppers.

I'm always wary of people who say "oh we're not an X family!". One solution rarely suits everyone in a family. Maybe your kids are cereal and toast kids, have you tried that? With the appropriate non gluten non dairy options of course, if it's the kids who have allergies.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 20/02/2026 10:03

No photo unfortunately as just finished mine!
I had: overnight oats, chia and milled flaxseed with almond milk, blueberries and raspberries, a dash of almond oil and kefir to top.

Weekdays we have quick breakfasts at different times due to school & work.

Cereal
Toast
Granola & yoghurt
chia pudding
porridge
overnight oats

Weekends - tend to eat together

cereal
toast
eggs
avocado
bacon
sausages

Hagnumber4 · 20/02/2026 11:47

To clarify the "we aren't a toast family." I would definitely eat rounds and rounds of toast, happily....but would be hungry an hour later and get indigestion

DS1 is gluten free and refuses all bread alternatives. He will happily eat a sugary cereal, always dry. Although interestingly not the cocoa pops (gf version) that I just bought for the holidays.

DS2 would demand an egg sandwich every day if he had the choice but I'd quite like to get some fruit/veg in before school too because he will basically only eat a couple of crisps all day (year 3 but lunchbox goes unchecked).

My personal preference would be to have a roast dinner or curry for breakfast and a piece of toast/cereal for dinner 😂

An interesting update. Cereal isn’t all bad. Is certainly no worse than flapjack.

Also, you don’t need to eat so much toast you get indigestion, one or two rounds will suffice.

Speak to the school if your ds isn’t eating much of their lunch. I have a child eating their lunch during afternoon registration as they don’t like the dinner hall noise and just want to rush out and play.

This ^^

You’ve just identified what your children like, you’re making life much harder by trying to force them to have other things.

mindutopia · 20/02/2026 12:37

No pictures, but today we had pancakes with Nutella or maple syrup. We’ve had that several days this week as trying to keep costs down and it’s an easy cheap meal as had flour in the cupboard, milk about to go out of date and we have eggs from our chickens.

Normal breakfasts are pastries or cereal with fruit. I’d love them to eat something heartier and more protein heavy, but they are resistant enough to eating any breakfast at all before school.

I tend to eat things like boiled eggs, udon and miso broth, or scrambled eggs with avocado.

Acunningruse · 20/02/2026 12:40

weekdays the kids get their own porridge or cereal.
Weekends we have proper family breakfasts served buffet style so everyone can help themselves from:
Granola
Muesli
OJ
Pot of coffee
Pancakes (you could make with almond flour and almond milk?)
Berries
Banana
Sourdough loaf
Greek yogurt
Toppings eg raisins flaked almonds and nuts

Youve made me realise I need to take a picture of it!

canisquaeso · 20/02/2026 12:47

If you all prefer meal type breakfasts maybe looking into East Asian cuisine options would suit you better?

popcornandpotatoes · 20/02/2026 16:56

We don't have breakfast as a family but DD usually has cereal, I am not delighted by how this habit has formed but I add in a side bowl of berries or banana. She likes bagels with cream cheese too but takes too long to eat these on a school morning. She'd happily have pancakes, toast or occasionally porridge too. The only type of actual egg she will eat is a boiled egg with soldiers, often has this for brunch on Saturdays

AgnesMcDoo · 20/02/2026 16:59

I have yogurt
DS has glass of milk and vitamin tablet
DD has pop tarts or cereal or toast
DH has cereal or fruit
