Do you remember this Covid news footage?

Chatting to SIL last night and we were remembering news footage we watched before the Christmas of Covid when the news was coming out of China about this virus. We clearly remember watching as a family news footage (would have been on BBC normal news not online) from China of people collapsing and fitting in the streets then being zipped up on stretchers and body bags and loaded into a black and yellow van by hazmat suited doctors/army. We all clearly remember this , it was not a film. What was this footage? Covid didn't present like that at all? We remember being really scared. SiL is a nurse and we remember her saying "what the hell is this thing"
Anyone else remember this footage?

This! They were welding doors shut! On BBC between Xmas and New Year.

Do you have a link to this...

The name Covid isn't get coined until 2020, it was just referred to as a mystery virus / a flu and potential mentions of SARS / bird flu, all very nondescript.

I seem to remember early on thoughts od Pangolins being the source.

Covid was coined, not sure who by, and is a daft name as its short for Coronavirus Disease, and doesn't really narrow the field, there are lots of coronavirus's out there.

Oh yeah! I forgot the pangolins!

it's hard to over-state how completely wrong you are!

You believe now you had this information - you simply didn't have information about any concerns about Italy in early January because there were none then. The first case confirmed was 31 January; while there may have been earlier unconfirmed cases, there was no known concern in early January like you suggest.

All of this information is publicly available and verifiable.

All over alternative news, is the bit you are missing. I was very much an outlier and felt incredibly stupid in my mask but decided it wasn’t worth the risk. I am well aware it wasn’t remotely official news or reporting. I follow all news, foreign, alternative.

Lots of videos have been deleted on YouTube.

Anyone remember the James Cordon & Ariana Grande video promoting vaccines as our ticket to freedom. Had millions of views and the original video with those hits is gone now.

'No More Lockdowns Anymore' was its name I think.

Do you have a link to this...

With the way this thread has gone so far, i'm going to assume that's a no.

It's amazing how so many people are certain they're right, but yet can provide zero proof to back up their claims.

usedtobeaylis · 19/02/2026 10:34

China was in lockdown well before it was named covid-19.

I remember it too. I was watching it unfold in China and other countries on the news for a couple of months before it came over here. The footage came out, of that, and hospitals in places like Italy, and people on here were still downplaying it saying that people were overreacting and we’d never have a lockdown here…

But precisely none of this happened!

You weren't watching it 'for a couple of months'! Once the news reports started from China (late December), it started to have international coverage (January 2020), and the first cases outside China, in pretty much all European countries happened in late January and early February, and all of those cases had a direct travel connection with China. The news cycle moves quickly. Overall, it was less than a month before it went from being a small unrelated news item about China to diagnosed cases in Europe.

You also would not have been discussing about a lockdown then - none of us even understood that concept prior to mid-March, when it happened.

My brain is the link Hmm DH and I talked about it when the shit started to hit the fan in Europe. 'Eee can you remember when we thought it would never affect us?!' conversations

Yes - 23 January for China's lockdown, and 11 February for the naming of Covid. by WHO.
So a few weeks.

The OP won't be convinced of anything because ' she wrote it down' despite facts proving that her family, at best, misinterpreted a news report. I don't think there is much point trying to convince them otherwise.

To the poster who says her and her son ' 100% got Covid' before Christmas 2019, I find this interesting and whilst it can't be 100% Covid, I have 2 anecdotal stories that are a weird coincidence.

My friend and his wife were both bed ridden with a 'virus' before Christmas that year, and were scared because they had difficulty breathing. The doctors also suggested it might be pleurisy. Fortunately they both recovered and didn't thin anything more about it until Covid hit big time.

Also, In my job I was see newly arriving Chinese students face to face. Some of these were definitely from Wuhan .From January to March 2020 I had a nasty chest infection that left me with coughing fits and struggling to breath. I went to the GP several times, even with my partner for bac up because I was so worried about my health. I even got sent for chest xrays. The xrays came bac clear, then the country went into loc down. I still find the timing of this mystery illness too much of coincidence given my proximity to newly arriving Chinese nationals.

Re timelines it is worth remembering that all the school ski trips still took place in the Feb half term. (Hence the Italian link being a big spreader)

We went to London with the dc and went to WBS in the Feb half term - there were no restrictions or worries about travel at all at the time (but it was less than a month until the first lockdown!) We queued at the studios and were in the big foyer etc with loads of others all squeezed in.

Remember that A&E staff were only screening for students who had visited certain areas of mainland China for their NY for ages - not screening for travel pr other areas. And no NHS staff were supplied with or expected to wear much PPE before Easter even.

Your recollections re timings are wrong.

No because ours wasn't a ski trip it was a trip to china

A couple of months worth of news reports. Care to share any of them?

So so so so easily cleared up by simply giving be diary entry date and there will
be lots of posters here happy to find the BBC tea time broadcast and link it for rewatching.

You said it was on the BBC though? Surely you'd be able to find the news report? You can't just say I remember they were sealing doors and the BBC reported on that before the new year because I remember?

eggandonion · 19/02/2026 10:38

Also in Ireland...I remember the mid January report on Irish residents in China and the virus. Then a few weeks of waiting and hoping until St Patrick's Day parades cancelled!
However assorted family members were horribly ill in Ireland and England in December. And a friend was so ill he ended up in hospital and had a lumbar puncture...conclusion was 'a virus '.
Possibly this is also confusing the timings?
The main Chinese whispers I heard were about massive amounts of cars outside hospitals...then the building at top speed of field hospitals in regions where travel was forbidden.

What's 'alternative news'?

There is simply no way that you had any access, alternative or otherwise, to information that was unavailable - because it wasn't known! - prior to late December 2019.

Have you links to this information and these 'alternative sources'?

If 'alternative' means conspiracy theories on the internet, well, sure, we all know they abounded during Covid - but they didn't have prior information, which was sharing public health guidelines like mask-wearing, in advance of any official source even knowing about it. Come on.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 19/02/2026 10:38

I remember the clip you are talking about - a middle aged skinny man who we only see from the back falls to his right and seemed to seize / die immediately. I’m certain it was reported alongside ‘ new virus emerging in China’ and I’m now certain it was propaganda to keep people off the streets in china and got leaked here as fact.

Just the usual seasonal flu.

Think of every December and Christmas, including this one - so many flu-like illnesses, often requiring hospitalisation. Flu is a serious illness in itself, obviously, but it wasn't Covid.

Yes, I remember it because even at the time, I felt that something about it didn't sit quite right.

I remember footage of people collapsed in the streets and a man convulsing on a hospital stretcher.

No - despite the investigations, it was never confirmed what the origin of the virus was. It was probably always impossible to confirm that, given the nature of how viruses work.

So certain, and yet still no proof. 🤦‍♀️
