Hidden camera found. What to do?

My daughter’s friend has just found a hidden camera attached to a power bank in her bedroom. She shares a house with others from uni. What should she do immediately? Trying to prevent mistakes so that they can find the fuc*er who planted it.

It's not appropriate to call 999 for this. It's a misuse of the emergency call system. It's not a question of downgrading the call to non urgent it's about calling the appropriate number. No one is at immediate risk as distressing as it is.

Well she's alerted a pervert that she knows what they are doing. A violent criminal could be on his way to retrieve the evidence. I don't think it's unreasonable for her to feel threatened and call the police on 999.

Walkerzoo · 19/02/2026 20:50

Op. Amazing how this was caught. Keep us updated. And hope she is ok.

This is why I just bookmark the OP's last post and check back for updates. Not here for the squabbling, it just derails the thread.

Well, yes, I agree. But that doesn’t help the OP who was hoping for constructive advice.

There is some good technical advice if you search through the posts.

livelovelough24 · 19/02/2026 21:15

This thread is hilarious. I genuinely don’t understand what pleasure people get from hijacking someone else’s post. The OP is in distress and came here looking for help. She was asking what she should do, and we all agree she needs to contact the police as soon as possible. Debating which number she should call is beside the point and has nothing to do with the actual issue.

Utterknowitall · 19/02/2026 21:47

Sorry. I have not rtft. But I am 100% sure the police will take it seriously and the perpetrator may well get jail time. It's voyeurism.

I had the misfortune of finding a sudden camera in my bedroom. As it was in a private house there was little doubt as to who had placed it there. I went to a police station to report it & can assure you they took it very seriously. I was wary of reporting it as I didnt think it would be taken seriously but the police really surprised me. Slightly different situation to yours OP but don't let anything put you off going to the police. The perpetrator went to jail eventually.

Agree @trirose the police really do take this crime seriously, the girl's mother is wrong. I really hope it gets dealt with very quickly. I would suggest to them to follow up the online report with a call, or a visit to the nearest station.

CherryRipe1 · 19/02/2026 22:40

Not rtft but & this may have already been mentioned but there's a whole underground cult of this kind of thing with incel types who stream and trade voyeuristic footage. It's creepily competitive as to who can get the best shots of women showering, sleeping, dressing, going to the loo. Awful.

Don't unplug the router, if she hasn't already, but do log in and change the password. If you unplug it, the routing table is cleared. If an external or internal device is connected to the wi-fi camera, it will be logged in the routing table.

There are still ways to retrieve that information via the ISP if she has already unplugged it, but it will take longer.

If she doesn't know how to log into the router to change the password, the ISP will have instructions and the default password online. Changing the password will stop anyone from reconnecting unless they have the new password.

Ideally, touch or change nothing until police have attended. A bit late in this case admittedly but at least fiddle with nothing further until they've been.

For future reference for anyone reading this thread; if you find a hidden camera, move out of its line of sight (assume a wide angle/ fish eye lens) & call the police. Do not touch it or in any other way interfere with it. If it's in your home & you absolutely can't avoid going in that room, place something in front of or over it that does not touch it while you wait for police to attend. If the camera is in a public space, alert other users in the immediate vicinity but do not allow anyone, including staff, to touch it, wait for the police.

Be very wary of changing rooms & loos, especially unisex/ gender neutral ones, & I hate to live in times when I have to mention this but in public loos, flip up the seat before use & check for cameras attached to the underside or to the bowl rim - urophilia is a revoltingly common paraphilic disorder.

Why not change the router password? If someone technical enough and nefarious enough has access to their local network, they can remotely log into any connected device and do anything.

I'd personally not be waiting for the police to attend before changing the router password and logging out all connected devices.

It's because they might be accessing other devices that you shouldn't interfere with the evidence.
Never interfere with the evidence.

Lavender14 · 19/02/2026 23:10

Op she needs to call 101, report the camera and she also probably needs to stay elsewhere especially incase the landlord planted it given he has keys. All the rooms in the house will need to be searched. Is she living in a mixed house or all female? If she's disconnected it then the person will know she's found it and she'll need to make sure she's safe with people she trusts and away from the house. I also wouldn't trust anyone with access to the room like a bf or ex.

How violating for her that's awful. I hope they catch the person responsible.

Never interfere with the evidence.

Exactly.

They might be accessing laptops with saved banking data on them or downloading child sex abuse images.

Changing the router password and logging out devices does not delete any of the routing history.

This is a shocking way to think 😮 I would never dream of dialling 999 unless in a life or death situation. Yes this is a serious crime but nobody is dying.

You would not call 999 if a burglary in progress? If you see criminal damage occurring to vehicles? You are wrong, you should absolutely call 999 if you see a crime in progress

No relevance to this situation

Your daughter's friend can also speak to her department at uni. They should have learning and teaching support officers or similar who can direct her to any available support, and if she needs extensions on any essays etc whilst this is dealt with. They will also be able to advise in case it turns out to be another student who put the camera there. The university's housing team may also be able to offer support if she feels she needs to move out.

Wishing both girls all the best. I'm so sorry we live in a time where shit like this happens.

That's the issue - the good advice is buried under a mountain of bickering.

TECHNOLOGICALLY CHALLENGED PERSON ALERT

Would this have been listed as a device in their router? Eg Julie’s laptop, Sarah’s laptop, unidentified device? If so, can anyone give a link as to how to check this so these students can prevent it happening again?

trirose · 19/02/2026 16:33

We this has turned into a shit show. Just come back from work and had to scroll through over 140 comments of mostly people arguing over which number to call. Really Not helpful guys.

The girl who found the camera has submitted an online form. Her Mom thinks the police won’t be interested or do anything. I feel that she should have at least called 101.

I came on here for advice as sadly I’m sure this has happened to others. I didn’t want this girl to make mistakes and prevent the ba**d being caught.

Scrolling through these squabbles has made realise this was probably the wrong place to come. I could of popped down to the local primary school to hear these sort of conversations. Pitiful really. Go start your own post to argue on.

I'm staggered that your response, rather than the obvious, was to write a post here, seeking advice from mainly hysterical Meghan Markle haters.
That said, I hope the culprit is apprehended.

Oh thank you! I’ll have a proper look tomorrow.

I’ll still get it wrong.

LiveLuvLaugh · 20/02/2026 06:33

BastardtheCat · 19/02/2026 05:15

Shocking? I disagree. This is a sex crime and ongoing. Call handlers can and are trained to react appropriately to this. Posters shouldn’t be shamed by others for suggesting this.

999 is for immediate risk to life, limb or property ie an emergency. Posters should be absolutely be shamed for not knowing what 999 is for. OPs daughter is the victim of a serious crime - she needs an urgent response and 101 is the correct route. It will be triaged very quickly - I make reports at work to 101 via the online reporting system and I get a response in less than 5 mins when the matter is urgent.

Anndalouzier · 20/02/2026 07:36

What the actual fuck has Megan Markle got to do with this?

I was wondering that🤔
God there are some real idiots on this thread with the 101 /999 arguing shite. The n when you think it could get any more stupid the reference to Meghan Markle gets trotted out.
Some of us have tried to help with practical advice, I hope this gets sorted out for the young women concerned.

Ignore the silly ones. Just report to the police. As someone who been to uni and lived in alot of rented houses I'm.shocked so please don't let the landlord get away with it. Hope your daughter and her housemates are ok. Id also report this to the uni. Totally understandable if you don't return on here. Just make sure this is reported x

Why do you assume it's the landlord?
