Premier inn or Travelodge in London - where?

dafsortulips · 14/02/2026 14:33

I am planning a solo trip in May. Friday to Sunday so 2 nights. I am meeting some friends on the Saturday night for dinner and theatre. Beyond that I plan on shopping mixed with some tourist spots/walking.

Premier Inn and TL seem to be reasonable but I am not sure where to base myself. I’ll likely come in from Heathrow. Possibly by train though which would be Kings Cross but I am 90% sure I’ll fly. Where would you base yourself?

Also, just out of curiosity, why is air b and b cheap in London. I did have a look as DH said he might come down but he can’t get away from work so isn’t now. I did look at air b and b and it’s cheap.

Southwark was good for us, the one near the underground.

Have to disagree with the pp who said Paddington is too far, we have stayed at the new PI there and walked to the more central areas every day. It’s also just a stop or 2 on the Liz line (which would be your connection from LHR, so 2 birds type thing) to Bond street or Tottenham Court Road if you would rather not walk from Paddington.

Don't go to Holborn PI, it’s really run down and in desperate need of a refurb.

Kings cross PI is decent but if you are coming in from LHR it adds a layer of travel you don’t need.

There's a PI hub in covent garden I stayed in with work last year took self to theatre and felt very safe.

Also recommends z hotels have used them for work before too

I like the premier inn at Blackfriars. On my way there now so if it’s awful since I last stayed I’ll update my post.

I like the Premier Inns at Angel and Belsize Park. Both an easy hop to King's Cross for connections across London. I've stayed at both several times and they are much better standard than a travelodge and usually reasonably priced

If you're a Slow Horses fan there's a pi next door to Beppes cafe in Smithfield, that's a quiet area.

On a side note: please don't go shopping on Oxford Street, it's not a good experience. You'd have a much nicer experience on The Kings Road starting at Sloane Square tube and the lovely Peter Jones department store.

yep Oxford street is awful, you get harassed and followed, there’s no toilets, yes that could happen in other London areas but it hasn’t I go often

Dd and a friend stayed in the Premier Inn in King’s Cross recently, very happy with it.

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 14/02/2026 17:18

Try Z hotel - central options and cheap and clean

AgnesMcDoo · 14/02/2026 17:19

Check Holiday Inn Express as well. Often cheaper and always nicer.

I find Canning Town is a good base for most things in London. It’s cheap and has both the tube and DLR to travel on.

MissMoneyFairy · 14/02/2026 17:42

The St Giles opposite Tottenham court road is good value, central and has been refurbished

I’ve paid £160 a night for a Hilton for my daughter and I for a long weekend in a few weeks. I wouldn’t be looking at TLs with that sort of budget!

Where did you find this? Is it over a Saturday? I’m trying to find something and can’t find anything anywhere near that cheap? Not sure I’m looking in the right places.

historyismything82 · 14/02/2026 17:57

I've stayed at Premier Inn Kings Cross and TL Covent Garden many times. CG is handy for theatre etc. KC is good for when you have to leave for train first thing. Have fun.

jay55 · 14/02/2026 17:58

There’s a couple of premier in hubs in Westminster which is super quiet for sleep on weekends but still a short walk to the theatres

Direct with Hilton. Thurs, Fri, Sat.

Farringdon Premier Inn. Straight on met line from Kings Cross. Short walk through Smithfield. Plenty of places to eat and drink, easy walk into City, St Paul’s, South Bank, Vincent Garden. Plus met and Elizabeth lines at Farringdon and H&C, district and circle from Barbican or Blackfriars, central from St Paul’s. Honestly everywhere is walkable from there plus it’s safe and has history right on your doorstep.

All of this is amazing. Thanks all so much. I will be back when the rugby is finished.

I can’t find anything that cheap but I’m looking for June so maybe that’s why. Great options to explore though.

RoseLavenderBlue · 14/02/2026 18:08

Last time I went to London I stayed at the Premier Inn Westferry. It’s on the DLR so you change from the tube at Bank. It is literally right next to the steps of the DLR station. Nice hotel too, good breakfast included and views over Canary Wharf lit up at night. More than happy with it.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 14/02/2026 18:12

The Park Plaza Westminster Bridge is huge and consequently is often very reasonably priced. We have never paid as much as £200. The breakfast isn’t worth bothering with. The location is superb. Less than 15 minutes walk from both Westminster and Waterloo underground stations. I stayed there earlier this month on a rare night when it didn’t rain and walked to the theatre. It depends which one you’re going to but most West End theatres are 20-30 minutes walk.

don't bother with the breakfast it's crap, instead go have brunch at fallow. Even if it's a few pounds more than a Premier Inn in Westminster Kings Cross or whatever, it means you can go back to your hotel and dump stuff in the middle of the day

A "few pounds" more 😂

£200 for a2 night stay for a family of 4 at the Kings Cross travelodge or £250 a night at the thistle.

Gosh I'd love to have your spare cash.

NannyR · 14/02/2026 18:18

I stayed at the premier inn in Aldgate as a solo traveller. It was a great location, near Kings Cross and one of the cheaper central London Premier Inns.

Z Hotels are pretty reasonable and some are very handy for the theatres. Plus if you sign up for their free membership you get cheese and wine!

I second this. Have only had good experiences with them. I think there's one near Cambridge Circus.
