Is anyone celebrating Valentine's Day?

In the past, my husband used to buy me chocolates, flowers and we would go out for a meal. However for the last 10 years, we've treated it like any other day.
I'm going shopping later, and he's doing his own thing.

We're in the @Tonissister camp! Any excuse - big rugby/football game, Strictly final, birthdays... although we're Scottish so "celebration" might not be totally accurate for any sports events....

I've had a bouquet arrive this morning and there will be a card and jewellery when he manages to get out of bed. I'm a bit lower key in that it's just a card and a chocolate heart from me.

M&S dine in tonight although I'll get steaks from the local butcher and have the main tomorrow. Life's a challenge with work and looking after aging/ill relatives that you have to take every opportunity to lighten it up.

St Valentine's bones are interred in Glasgow and we feel it's our duty to honour the day. 😁

We've never celebrated but my 12yo has requested to watch a romantic film so we are doing A Knight's Tale 😀❤️

Will probably make my DH watch a valentine's horror later - Heart Eyes most likely 😍

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 14/02/2026 09:12

I got DH a single red rose, I painted a lovely heart and made a card out of it and bought some brownie bites.
Our children are super into it this year and made so many cards so last night I made a card for them each.
DH made us love heart shaped pancakes this morning.

We will have a nice meal tonight once the kids are asleep.

Low key but nice.

Bit surprised to read that people are buying chocolates, cards etc for their kids. Is this a new thing? I thought Valentine's day was for romantic partners alone, rather than a whole-family celebration like Christmas.

Can’t it just be whatever you want it to be? I don’t have kids but my husband added a little present for the cat in my little pile of gifts, and I always write my card to him from me and the cat. It’s just silly fun to make us smile in February which can be a cold, dark and rainy month!

99pwithaflake · 14/02/2026 09:27

No, we never do.

It’s the dogs birthday though so we’ll definitely be celebrating that 🤣

HeadyLamarr · 14/02/2026 09:33

I think of it as more for teens or very new relationships; we haven't observed it in years.

And there's Olympics and rugby on the telly to watch.

Lottapianos · 14/02/2026 09:39

I like it as a daft little celebration. We go low key - exchange cards, I made chocolate brownies and we're having fish pie and champagne later.

We went out for dinner for Valentine's the first few years we were together but it was a bit weird seeing all the restaurants set up with only tables for 2, and half of the couples not speaking to each other!

BertSymptom · 14/02/2026 09:56

“Horrified” is such a Mumsnetty response to the idea of celebrating Valentine’s Day!

But yes we always mark it in some little way. Why not? A lovely excuse to celebrate the people you love. This year we’ve done cards, little gifts and a nicer than normal breakfast with DC. Some years we do a takeaway on the sofa but as it’s a Saturday and we’ve got childcare we’re having dinner out by ourselves.

If that’s a daft waste of money, imagine how people felt when Henry VIII made it a public holiday!

HK04 · 14/02/2026 10:30

Got a text and will get to listen to him shout at the football later… really pushed the boat out 🥳…

Tillygan60 · 14/02/2026 10:36

Together 40 years, exchange cards and small gift, then nice meal at home in front of the TV....

Giddykiddy · 14/02/2026 11:56

yes - staying in a beautiful country house hotel having dinner in their michelin star restaurant tonight - well done me - i got it for DH as part of his Christmas present ❤️🥂 DH gave me the soppiest card ever / i asked if he was being sarcastic!

LilyBunch25 · 14/02/2026 12:02

We don't do valentines day; in fact we were discussing it this morning 😅 we've been together 10 years married for 2, but known each other 23 years. To us valentines is about "wooing" someone you want to be with- unless I'm wrong? We don't think its a thing for us. We have our wedding anniversary, we'll celebrate our love then

LilyBunch25 · 14/02/2026 12:03

99pwithaflake · 14/02/2026 09:27

No, we never do.

It’s the dogs birthday though so we’ll definitely be celebrating that 🤣

😅 Love it

GreenEyesIsBack · 14/02/2026 12:04

Yes, I'm happily single but have two different meals deals, all for me.

MissConductUS · 14/02/2026 12:07

DH got me a lovely card, posh chocolates, and we're going out for a lovely dinner tonight. I got him a card and some chocolate-covered popcorn, which he loves. We've been married for 29 years.

Fbfbfvfvv · 14/02/2026 12:12

We have always celebrated it. It’s just a nice thing to do. We write a nice card to each other, have a token gift and an over indulgent meal and a couple of glasses of wine.
I don’t really understand the “it’s just to make card companies money/what’s the point”camp, because that applies to Christmas, birthdays, Easter and mother’s day/Father’s Day too. But perhaps they don’t celebrate those either. I think life is too short not to enjoy it when you can.

notwittywithusernames · 14/02/2026 12:47

Nothing for valentines (single) but going for a meal with family and my DC as its my birthday today

Springflowersyay · 14/02/2026 12:57

My DH buys me flowers, chocolates and gifts throughout the year and yes, he gets me something similar for Valentine’s.

I always send him something to his office.
Usually sweet edible things he is forced to share round, just because he’s a massive introvert and it amuses me!

CatPawprints · 14/02/2026 16:47

Just read through this whole thread and it's really made me smile. If I'm allowed to be a bit sappy for a moment, just thinking of all these couples, families, friend groups doing nice things together on this cold sunny Saturday in February brings a bit of a glow. Hope you've all enjoyed your day so far.

I've got the stew going in the oven and DH is back from work. DD is eating one of the heart biscuits we made today. About to light some candles to make house feel cosy.

BrunchBarBandit · 14/02/2026 17:01

I wouldn’t want to go out for dinner but we sometimes go to the cinema on VD. We had a memorable valentines one year when we went out for a dinner totally not knowing why every restaurant was packed: we’d forgotten Valentine’s Day. We couldn’t get in anywhere to eat so spent the night in the pub. I’m fairly sure that was the night I conceived DS2 (not in the pub mind!)

This year he’s cooking for me and we’ll have candles, wine & music at home whilst the kids entertain themselves (teens now). I’ve got him a card and a kilo of chocolate brazils which I’ll give him when we sit down for dinner.

CommonlyKnownAs · 14/02/2026 17:04

No. Broadly I tend towards any excuse to celebrate, but this holiday has never really spoken to me.

Stuckinthemiddlewithyouuhoh · 14/02/2026 17:06

Flowers cards steak tonight film later nice walk
Nothing too exciting but nice

EnterQueene · 14/02/2026 17:18

We celebrate- DH bought me a beautiful card, roses & chocs, I got him a card & baked him a cake. We had a lovely sunny snowy walk and are going to have an M&S dine in tea followed by a film. Got to keep the love alive (we’ve been together over 30 years ❤️)

ApolloandDaphne · 14/02/2026 17:57

We always buy each other a card and this year i bought some nice biscuits for us to share. This morning we went out to a market and a nice fish shop and bought food to make a lovely dinner (which i will cook). We are enjoying a G&T whilst watching the rugby (come on Scotland!!) and we will eat after. It's all nice and relaxed.

Walker1178 · 14/02/2026 18:00

We swapped cards and went out for a nice lunch together. On the years when he’s working I go all out and buy a heart shaped biscuit to put in his lunchbox. We’re quite a loving couple so don’t really feel the need to do anything special for valentines
