Why's there suddenly so many different types of toilet cleaners in the shops?

Noticed tonight in the cleaning aisle. Foaming powders to pour down the u-bend. Some new zoflora expanding foaming spray. That upside down bleach spray. When did cleaning the loo suddenly become such a fad? What happened to just some bleach or toilet duck?

Instagram. The millions of cleaning videos showing extreme cleaning has made everyone go nuts for products to clean better/deeper/faster/more thoroughly.

granstable · 13/02/2026 21:53

And why are there so few you can use if you have a septic tank??

Yeah you're probably correct. Those influencers are probably a marketers dream really. Don't really need to splash out on TV adverts anymore when you can just get influencers to market it now.

I'm guessing not many homes these days still have septic tanks. Only in the far sticks of the countryside I'm guessing.

Well, that’s a new one

FairViewRosie25 · 13/02/2026 22:09

Well yes we are in the arse end of nowhere and it cost me £170 last week to have our septic tank emptied. Youre

Just had a google... latest estimate is about 1.5 million properties in the UK. Ecover must be raking it in... it's the only cleaner I've been able to find recently that's marked as safe.

Heyhelga · 13/02/2026 22:28

Ok yeah that is a lot of homes actually. Yeah you'd think the big cleaning companies would be muscling into that market share wouldn't you.

Are there? I genuinely love cleaning products, the expanding foam sounds amazing!

Heyhelga · 13/02/2026 22:54

Yeah it was a zoflora one. Kinda like the Cif bathroom mousse in a metal can.

Okay, im getting some this weekend!
exciting

EmeraldRoulette · 13/02/2026 23:10

I had no idea this was a thing

and I'm not sure why people want to put expanding foam down the loo. Sounds like a potential comedy sketch.

I did see something on social media that's meant to help if you are in a heavy limescale area

I was actually interested in that, but typically, I've never seen it again. If anyone here knows what it is, please post!

Aldi had it

Heyhelga · 13/02/2026 23:20

That's the one. Was a blue can one I saw. So, is it any good then?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 13/02/2026 23:23

Omg
off to Aldi tomorrow

EmeraldRoulette · 13/02/2026 23:27

@Heyhelga thanks I already use that for cleaning
The thing I saw on social media was something that you can leave in the cistern that's meant to help with heavy limescale

None of these things do help really so I suppose it's just regular heavy cleaning!

I got the blue one too, yeah I like it, my toilet has a bit of a weird shape and it helps cleaning under the rim. Smells nice too. I’m a marketing dream for cleaning products

Yeah I'm not the one to know what that product could possibly be. Hopefully someone on here pops along with the answer for you.

Haha well fairplay they designed it for toilets just like yours it seems. Can't go wrong with toilet duck for that with mine though.

People like to try new things, so companies keep inventing unnecessary new products just to make money. Most of them end up being withdrawn.

I make all our cleaning products now - thank you Nancy Birtwhistle. So much cheaper, smell better, and better for the environment.

EmeraldRoulette · 14/02/2026 00:48

@catera it wasn't but that looks good!

Thank you - I will probably give that one a try. Thanks for posting.

Heyhelga · 15/02/2026 08:27

I might give those blocks a whirl too actually. Anything that saves on the cleaning is a win.
