How many hours do you usually sleep at night?

Morning all.

Is it normal that as you get older, you get less sleep or have sleepless nights?
I go to bed around 11ish, but for the last few days, I've been waking up multiple times during the night. I can't go to bed early, or I will be tossing and turning.. I'm not sure if I should take anything.

Hi again. I'm not going to the drs. The pharmacy may offer something, but I might try herbal remedies or magnesium instead. I've also had some nights last year where I was awake at 4 or 5 a.m.

Anyway, I hate taking meds.. Thanks for your concern.

I'm using Nutrition Geeks 3 in 1 magnesium available on Amazon at the moment. Some of the supermarket sleepy teas are very relaxing. I'm using Aldi's at the moment and it's lovely plus cheap. Lavender oil is also good. Hot bath and /or hot milky drinks can also help.

About 7 hours 20 mins average according to my watch.

This has much improved since starting HRT. Before this perimenopause meant waking constantly and not getting back to sleep for years!!

I take all the magnesium and have good
sleep hygiene but when it’s a hormonal issue only HRT can sort it.

4-5 hrs a night and that's with magnesium before bed. Worse thing is if I go to bed early (10pm) then I wake four hours later and that's it so I go at midnight and wake at 4am. It's definitely perimenopause as the night sweats have become really bad recently. My GP reluctant to start me on HRT.

Why would your GP be reluctant to start you on HRT?

Sleep is so important. I can’t tell you how much better I feel on HRT. I wish I’d started years ago.

Yes, I totally agree, particularly with the recent research about menopause brain changes being similar to dementia.
My GP encouraged me to try natural remedies first and said I should thoroughly research serious negative effects before considering HRT. I don't have any red flags in my health that would impact using it.

7 - 9, although anything less than 8 hours doesn't feel great. I've really focused on prioritising sleep in the past year and noticed huge improvements to my overall health.

Gosh I honestly think you need a new GP who is more up to date. The latest guidelines state that for most women the benefits of HRT will outweigh any risks.

I was waking every 30 minutes with hot flushed throughout the night! But hadn’t slept for years previously.

Now my sleep is great. It was clearly hormones I needed all along.

Not sleeping has such a negative impact on health. I hate it when women are dismissed and we have to fight for HRT.

My sleep varies between 3.5 hours (thankfully, that's rare) and 7 hours (even rarer) per night. Most nights I get about 5.5 hours. If it's relevant, I'm 68 and on HRT.

GPs are often less than helpful when it comes to women's health and prescribing HRT. I'd call the surgery and explain that you'd like to see a GP with an interest in women's health and in particular the menopause. HRT has so many benefits. Improves mood, memory and cognition. Reduces CV risk factors including stroke, reduces cholesterol, risk of diabetes, improves skin and hair, and for me improved energy and easier weight loss.

I’m post menopausal and my GP won’t prescribe HRT because of medical history. My sleep patterns are awful and I average about 5 hours a night. For all those taking magnesium, have you found it gives you horrendous nightmares? I’ve tried the Better You magnesium spray several times and always wake up with heart pounding terrible dreams which make me nervous about going back to sleep…

About 7 hours. I wake at 4.30 to 5am whatever time I go to bed so have to make sure I go to bed early. Sleep quality is good though with lots of REM and deep sleep. My deep sleep went up lots after I started doing 5 min breath work before bed to lower my resting heart rate.

I now get 8 hours usually.

6 on average. I'm peri-menopausal and not allowed to take HRT.

I don't know how so many people can function on such little sleep.

Since 1 Jan, I've made more of an effort to have a consistent sleep pattern. I fall asleep between 10 and 11, my alarm goes off at 6.45. In the last 2 weeks, I have found that I am sleeping better than ever. I wake before my alarm and feel like I have had a good deep sleep. Prior to this, I was waking up still feeling tired or waking up during the night.

Last night I woke a few times due to illness but still feel OK today.

7.5 hours, though only recently with magnesium. Previous to that I would wake whenever husband went to the loo (several times a night, yes GP is aware :) ) and struggle to get back to sleep with mind racing (had a lot on the last few months including my dad dying suddenly). After a truly terrible two weeks over Xmas I started taking 1000mg magnesium bisgltcinate an hour before bed and it has helped no end - I don’t wake up when husband gets out of bed any more. If I do randomly wake I generally go straight back to sleep, and my Apple Watch confirms my sleep is loads better.
However!! I’ve also been feeling nauseous all day and if I do wake in the night I feel pretty sick. It is the magnesium unfortunately (stopped taking it and it cleared immediately) but I’m going to try halving the dose and taking it earlier so hopefully the good sleep will continue .

I take HRT and still wake before 5am! Feel well rested though provided I go to bed early.

Not enough! Yesterday I had a headache and felt horrendous because I’d had about 4 hours sleep for 2 nights in a row. After being on my knees all day I was then still wide awake at 1am unable to sleep. It’s enough to drive me demented. I very rarely sleep all. Night. I’m usually awake 3-4 times a night. Sometimes I get back to sleep, sometimes I don’t. I’m on HRT, and initially it helped but I’m going through a really bad patch of not sleeping at the moment. I’ve got some time off next week and am desperate to catch up on some sleep. Menopause is just the gift that keeps on giving.

It’s the progesterone pill (Ustrogen) that helps me sleep. I take just before bed.

Sorry for those that it doesn’t help though!

I see someone put blimey so many people sleep deprived, I think blimey how can you sleep over 8 hours! I was on hrt for almost 20 years,it didn't make me sleep longer. It doesn't "protect" against strokes. I spent 20 years working on a Hyper Acute stroke unit. Female patents were advised to discontinue hormones, either the contraceptive pill or hrt. It mainly protects against osteoporosis. Melatonin is a script only med in the UK,yes,you could buy it online from abroad, risky. Its normal to wake up several times in the night,you turn over in bed, change position. The late Michael Mosley said bi phasic sleep is normal in humans.

I used to have terrible sleep, lying awake riddled with anxiety. First I tried magnesium which did help a fair bit. However as time went on I realised it was linked to perimenopause and now I am asleep easily at the times of the month I take the progesterone tablet, so I know I can sleep 8-9 hours and the 2-4hrs I was getting was likely down to hormonal disregulation.
