We've got a day in London and are thinking of going to Greenwich as dh has never been and I've not been since I was a child.

Having done an internet search, it seems there is a lot more to see there than I expected.

What would you visit / Where is worth spending the time or prioritising ?

I'm guessing we'll have from about 10am/10.30 until about 4.30.

Bonus points if anyone can suggest anywhere to eat that won't involve us having to take out a mortgage.

Walking along the river is a treat in itself. Walk past the naval college and Trafalgar pub to the Cutty Sark pub. Obviously in the centre you gave the actual Cutty Sark, which I think you have to pay to get into. The market is on at weekends, the park is IMO the best in London. There’s the Royal Observatory and the maritime museum. It will keep you busy!

fairfat40 · 11/02/2026 23:34

In terms of eating, obvs there’s loads, the usual pizza express, Rosas, Bills, but I suggest going out of the main bit and to Royal Hill. there’s a cute veggie cafe called Royal Teas or The Prince, Greenwich, a quirky pub run by Italians who serve brilliant pizza, pasta etc - v reasonable.

confused98 · 11/02/2026 23:35

Maritime museum is free and good for kids!

If you head up Royal Hill @JustGiveMeReason go here for food:

Zizzi by the river Thames, the Maritime Museum, the deers in Greenwich Park, the market. Canary Wharf is 15 minutes on the DLR from there too (just one train!) and is worth spending a couple hours in imo

Butterflysunshine01 · 12/02/2026 03:42

Right outside the park from the bottom of observatory path there’s a pie and mash shop called Goddards which does proper traditional food and massive crumble custard desserts! Been there for years

JustGiveMeReason · 12/02/2026 16:52

Thanks for all the food recommendations. Smile

Anymore thoughts about how we spend the time ? (It is just dh and I - we are not young Grin).

The Old Royal Naval College has the Painted Hall which is worth a look. Obviously the Cutty Sark. The Trafalgar is a lovely pub right on the river. Maritime museum. There’s an Ivy restaurant in Blackheath Village near to the heath. Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park. The park is very hilly.

London Naru is good. Giles Coren reviewed it in the times this week. If you want something cheap
and tasty then Pho Street is good Vietnamese. Or there is the pie and mash shop or lots of good options in the market.

I would do-

train/dlr to Greenwich (cutty sark station is closed)

  • walk to the maritime museum and spend the morning there.
-Head out for lunch -walk through the park to the Observatory. Maybe book a show in the planetarium. -Head back down the hill to Cutty Sark. Could do the tour here but if not just look at the outside. -Walk through the Old Royal Naval College. Consider the Painted Hall tour (also a cost) or just visit the chapel which is free. -have a drink in the Trafalgar (nice but £££ so maybe just one!) -catch the Uberboat back

sorry about the formatting! Hope you can make some sense of it!

JustGiveMeReason · 12/02/2026 17:25

That's great - thanks both.

Useful information about the station being closed.

Greenwich station is only a 10 minute walk from Cutty Sark, so it shouldn’t be too much trouble x

Lullabycrickets23 · 12/02/2026 17:28

Mind that Cutty sark station is closed for refurbishment. You will have to get off at Greenwich station.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 12/02/2026 17:29

There’s lots to do there:-

Greenwich foot tunnel to Isle of Dogs
maritime museum (also has a play area upstairs)
2 markets
Paul Rhodes bakery for pastries cakes and croissants
Cutty Sark
nice play park in Greenwich park
Greenwich park
royal observatory

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 12/02/2026 17:31

There’s a Greggs there and also several fish and chip shops. If nice weather get food from the M&S simply food there. A Waitrose is approx 10 mins walk.

hexsnidgett · 12/02/2026 17:32

The market has some nice food options too, plus a pub - The Admiral Hardy does good value (for London) food too.

Agreed this is the covered I think Georgian market. There used to be a really cheap Chinese place in Greenwich but don’t know if it’s still there. The maritime museum isn’t too bad re prices and you can get pizza there.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/02/2026 19:42

See the Painted Hall at the Royal Naval College, and look at the bottom RH corner IIRC, where the artist painted himself in with his hand out, because he was waiting to be paid!

Walk through Greenwich park to Blackheath village

Trotula · 12/02/2026 20:54

There’s a lot to do in Greenwich, we stayed for three days and bought the RMG annual pass. You need to decide your priorities because of pre booking. Not all RMG have entry charge, we enjoyed Queen’s House which is foc. The whole area is lovely, plenty to see and do and fab view from the top of the hill.
Would also second Prince of Greenwich pub serving excellent Italian food, incredible pizza and a quirky jazz museum in the upstairs dining room, great atmosphere.
Online booking.
We used the Uber boats a few times which was a great way to see the river.
Have a great time @JustGiveMeReason!

JustGiveMeReason · 12/02/2026 21:53

Uber boats are a good shout, only cost one payment (oyster) plus you can get coffee and cake on board.

JustGiveMeReason · 12/02/2026 23:55

Tell me more about Uber boats please.
Would it make sense to do this rather than tube?
Can you just get on (like a tube or bus) and pay, as presumably it isn't an individual vehicle like a normal uber (taxi) ?

We wouldn't have an Oyster, would be using our credit / debit cards to travel

The skyline cable cars and (not sure on the time of year) but you can walk over the top of the o2. Uber boats you can book on the uber app

Edited

Your credit card, if you use contactless payment, is the equivalent of an Oyster card, you get the same discounts!

Yeah you just tap in and tap out on the Uber Boat, it is however usually packed, so I’d use the DLR instead, unless you are going to Tower Bridge
