Without googling, do *you* know how the date of Easter Sunday is calculated?

Happens every year with wild variation. Do you understand why?

Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox.

angelcake20 · 11/02/2026 00:36

Yes!

CitehCitehCiteh · 11/02/2026 00:37

Is it to do with the Moon?
Or Lent?

I think I knew many years ago through school but I can’t remember!

Teenagerantruns · 11/02/2026 00:38

Not really, something to do with a full moon? So its so many days after that moon, or something like that, l think, off to Google now😂

Ah!! I was “sort of” in the ballpark then!😁

Arlanymor · 11/02/2026 00:42

First Sunday after the Paschal full moon.

If there's a full moon at the equinox and it's a Sunday, do we get an early Easter or have to wait another month??

Ignore me. I asked Prof Google, who said it would be the following Sunday. The after part is important 😕

Gingybread · 11/02/2026 01:40

Only Bede can understand it!

But if equinox is a day after full moon then Easter feels like it’s in May! It’s not quite - happened once whilst kids were in school and the Easter - May half term was about 3 1/2 weeks it was intense almost chocolate melting weather

frozendaisy · 11/02/2026 01:44

Shrove Tuesday was in March I think

it was 50 shades of wrong

It's next Tuesday.

I haven’t noticed Easter Sunday passing since I was a child, it seemed like much more of a big deal then. We’re usually good at celebrating as many diverse holidays and festivals as possible but I’m not sure LO has ever even done an egg hunt!

Might fix that this year if I don’t forget.

BouleBaker · 11/02/2026 02:33

I know its the first Sunday after the first full moon after something.

Blame 7th century religion when the calendar was carnage and the synod of Whitby was called to make a rule and calm everythibg down.

FrozenFebruary · 11/02/2026 02:42

No & cba to remember/work it out. Google has its uses 💁🏻‍♀️

Olive567 · 11/02/2026 03:22

To do with moon cycles but not sure how exactly.

CurlewKate · 11/02/2026 05:37

Yes.

the80sweregreat · 11/02/2026 06:04

Easter can be as early as the end of March or around the 20th April. It is early this year. I think it’s to do with the moon cycles, but never really know why it’s not set dates ( as Christmas is)

Btc76 · 11/02/2026 06:05

The first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox

Octavia64 · 11/02/2026 06:06

No.

but I know it is complicated and there were arguments over it.

EleanorReally · 11/02/2026 06:12

sometimes it is in march instead of easter
mucking up my annual leave calculations

Doryismyspiritanimal · 11/02/2026 06:18

Short answer no, long answer, something to do with the moon 🌒 but that's all ....I have no idea 😳

Doryismyspiritanimal · 11/02/2026 06:20

I just Googled it and I still don't know

the80sweregreat · 11/02/2026 06:22

It’s one of those things that we accept isn’t it!
You can look up the dates years in advance. So someone has to work it out .. ( who is that person , yet we never question if it’s correct !)

mbonfield · 11/02/2026 06:31

There was a call recently that it should be fixed to a certain day
