You mean the winter sport?

Nobody gets it. I think that’s kind of the point 😆

itsthetea · 09/02/2026 18:10

Bowls on ice ?

Thedogswhiskers · 09/02/2026 18:12

Yes, so many things not to
get! Two different shoes, the woman hollering something at the guy furiously sweeping. 🧹
I still can’t work out if they are trying to get the round things into the circle or out!

I keep checking to see if we've got to the ski jumping. That's the only bit I really enjoy. I can't ski, have two left feet, have no head for heights and am an out and out coward, so have boundless admiration for the nutters who chuck themselves off those very high platforms.

If you’re being serious, they are trying to get their stones closer to the centre than the other team’s.

Littletreefrog · 09/02/2026 18:16

It's basically bowls on ice. You want your stone in the middle of the circle the other team want theirs in the middle of the circle. There is a lot more to it but that's enough for me.

After 4 goes each they are trying to get their round things (stones) as near as possible to the centre of the target as they can. The nearest gets a point, and if you also have the second nearest you get a second point, the same for 3rd and 4th.So on any throw you may be trying to place your stone somewhere, or just knock another one.
They sweep the ice to get the stone to curl round or go faster/further so it ends up where they want it to go.

IsThisLifeNow · 09/02/2026 18:17

I like curling because we're in with a chance! The shouting is instructions on where to sweep the stone to, It's very tactical!

Hiptothisjive · 09/02/2026 18:18

Complete fixation on an event that GB has a chance of winning a metal in so we all have to watch for days. Would be good to have other much more exciting events or even an even spread.

Not that much of a chance anymore. I suppose there is always bronze.

Upstartled · 09/02/2026 18:19

It's just old school marbles on ice, isn't it? With bonus sweeping.

Yes this, I quite like it and I don't know why!

But there's lots of sports I don't get - someone invented cricket, the most boring sport in the world, and made it last DAYS!

We're just all different aren't we? I spent Saturday watching rugby union and am only just over it now.

IsThisLifeNow · 09/02/2026 18:20

I was however excited to tune into a women's ice hockey match and hear an old team doing the commentary for it!!

Interesting, thank you. You sound like you know what it’s about. So the different shoes - one a slippy one and the other a grippy one?

OP posts:
Clementine12 · 09/02/2026 18:27

Slippy one to slide. Grippy one so they don’t fall over!

TeenToTwenties · 09/02/2026 18:29

Yes I believe one is slippy and one grippy .

Don't ask me about 'power plays' as I haven't come to grips with that yet.

BurntBroccoli · 09/02/2026 18:31

Hair or cheese?

Wonderknicks · 09/02/2026 18:32

I find it strangely fascinating.
Also, I love "big air" but can't bear the commentators. It's like the skate boarding commentators (it may be the same people?)

I think it is the same people at least one of them is and I can't stand listening to him. I have to watch it on mute.

Applecharlotte2 · 09/02/2026 18:36

Much more exciting than bowls!

cramptramp · 09/02/2026 18:38

I can’t stand the shouting.

Applecharlotte2 · 09/02/2026 18:38

Plus they know what we are planning and we don’t them!

FourSevenTwo · 09/02/2026 18:39

I've played it twice at work team building events.

The rules are essentially Petanque with static cochonnet and a way to interfere with the throw by changing the ice conditions a bit.

Amateurs use normal shoes and a small slider, slipper like thingy, over obe shoe for throwing.

A player is either trying to get very close to the center, to displace opponent's stone or to place your stone in a way it protects your centrally placed stone from displacing.

The mop action makes a bit of heat, melting the small irregularities on the ice surface, making the stone go a bit further.

I've enjoyed the most the position behind the central point, where you react on the opponent's throw and try to smooth the way for it outside of the central circle.

Bonkers1966 · 09/02/2026 18:51

It's fecking mad but at least they are getting out of the house.
