Poor DD’s eyes were swollen last night, infact she looked positively stoned ! This is them this morning, conjunctivitis yes? The amount of goo in her eyes was amazing. She’s been poorly with a temp, is this a secondary infection?

I’d say ring the doctor when it’s properly morning. it’s always better to check it out

Awww poor baba! That looks like conjunctivitis to me. I’d clean them with cotton wool pads dipped in warm water (wiping from next to the nose out) and use a new bit of cotton wool each wipe, don’t double dip in the water and hopefully she gets some relief quickly and visit a chemist if it doesn’t clear on a day or two. My dd had it recently (although not as bad) and I had to wipe her eyes about 10 times throughout the day and have it ready for her waking up as her eyes were stuck shut but it didn’t away without needing treatment. Your dd may need drops or cream tho as it does look quite bad, poor thing xx

Yes - this kid needs antibiotic ointment or drops. Call your pharmacy and see if you can buy it otc or if you need a prescription. In the meantime, I would bathe liberally in salt water and make sure that you wear gloves. This is usually highly contagious.

gooeyeye · 08/02/2026 04:27

Thanks all. I will try and get to a pharmacy with her. Not sure how we’ll get drops in her eyes though 😬 any tips?!

dishwasherneedssalt · 08/02/2026 04:28

ring 111 will give you a dr apt tom as she looks under 2. As you won’t be “allowed” to buy at the chemist ointment / drops for her as she is under 6.

To clean use cooled boiled water and cotton wool pad, treat each eye separate as it’s very contagious.

Poor little one looks very itchy ans sore

dishwasherneedssalt · 08/02/2026 04:31

Ointment easier for babies and more chance of getting it into the eye….

Ahh this is useful to know and appreciate telling me as it seems it would be a waste of time going to the pharmacy. I’m expecting her sister to get it aswell and there is only 15 months between them and share and touch everything 🤦‍♀️
Is it caused by a cold etc ?

She’s 2 in a few days does that make a difference for treatment?

I was given antibiotic eye drops for my 2.5 year old for exactly this so don't know where the under 6 thing comes in

My 6 month baby had this a couple of weeks ago and because he was under 2 they wouldn’t give antibiotics and we had to just do cleaning with cooled boiled water. It did clear up but took about a week which was horrible for him and he hated the cleaning,

Then I caught it, but I got antibiotic drops immediately and it was gone in a couple of days.

You need a prescription for the drops for a baby under 2.

Nomnomnew · 08/02/2026 06:10

Also my 3 year old didn’t get it so there is hope for your other child not getting it!

LivingTheDreamish · 08/02/2026 06:33

This happened to me once. I went to the pharmacist who sent me straight to the doctor. Eyes are fragile and important. Go to A&E if needed since it's Sunday.

fancytoes · 08/02/2026 07:45

Give the pharmacy a go: you might get a sympathetic pharmacist. Go in talk in a clear sensible way and ask for chloramphenicol (which is the drops or ointment that will blitz this). It’s clearly conjunctivitis.

They get so sniffy as it needs to be prescribed by a doctor but I have managed to get it from someone understanding who didn’t think I was going to use it with wild abandon (I mean, who would!?)

Good luck.

You need to wipe away some on the gunk, then put the eye drops in. Conjunctivitis is common and easily treated with antibiotics, it clears up quick.

out of hours doctor

edited to add it’s just telling op that needs to be seen really!

No, it’s not a condition for A&E at all. If you can’t drive to a pharmacy, then call 111 for an out of hours service. Conjunctivitis isn’t an accident or emergency.

Peclet · 08/02/2026 07:53

The getting eye drops. Do it with her to a teddy first and who her how fast and easy it is.

lay on the bed on her back with her head hanging g slightly off the end so it’s angled down. You go behind her and sort of lean over the top of her and quickly drop them
in. If your partner is there he can lay beside her hugging her to keep her arms out the way. A chocolate button is useful to administer as well at the same time.

Bath/ clean with cooled boiled water from the kettle first. One cotton wool swipe and bin the. Another one. Don’t reuse/double dip.

Mine wasn't conjunctivitis. Hopefully it is for the OP's DD though.

Does no one in the uk have access to an emergency gp out of hours? What is going on over there? Here in Ireland we have emergency gps in the evenings and on weekends!? Ffs!

edited to add I see people talking about out of hours care!! Thank god!

Yeah we do have out of hours lol wouldn’t be suprised if that goes though the way things are over here !

No way I’d take her to A&E gunky eyes. We’re going to go to Asda pharmacy and show the pics, hopefully they take pity considering she’s 2 in a few days

Yes, you need Chloramphenicol eye drops. Pharmacy won’t give to under 2 over counter though. Honestly, I’d just go in on your own and say are for husband or something. Bit of a white lie, but much less hassle for the sake of it.

Yep, do this and I'd go to pharmacy and see if you can get eye drops. I think of 2 or above you can buy them over the counter

Her skin looks red and swollen and she is systemically unwell, this could be periorbital/orbital cellulitis and I would take her to A&E, she may need IV ABx
