No sign of her after knocking. Would you leave the keys or take them in?

Oh. Strange one. Any sign of life indoors? Lights on?

KilkennyCats · 04/02/2026 21:13

Take them in. Anyone could burgle the place.

KittyEckersley · 04/02/2026 21:13

Take them in and put a note on the door.

TheChosenTwo · 04/02/2026 21:14

Frequently leave mine in the bloody door 🫣

Tontostitis · 04/02/2026 21:14

I'd take them in and leave a note, well I'd text my neighbour but I assume you don't have her number

Mumdiva99 · 04/02/2026 21:14

Take them in a leave a note.

PriscillaD · 04/02/2026 21:14

I would def remove them and knock; if no answer, I would text her or put a note through her door to say the keys were safe with me. But whatever you do, don't leave them in the door, unless you live in the middle of nowhere.

How would she read the note inside if she's locked out due to losing her keys...

Elizabeta · 04/02/2026 21:16

I’ve done this before, and was deeply grateful to the neighbour who took them in + texted me.

molifly · 04/02/2026 21:17

Why do you need to ask mumsnet ?

Put a note through her door? No, put a note ON her door.

Whatever you do OP, don’t do what my friend’s neighbour did and lock up and post the keys through the letterbox. My friend realised within minutes he’d left them and came home to find the neighbour just leaving his drive. One emergency locksmith and £120 later….

rosiebl · 04/02/2026 21:20

This happened to me. I took keys and stuck a note to the door. They were very appreciative.

HenDilemma · 04/02/2026 21:21

Thanks all. It doesn’t feel right to take someone’s keys but it’s better than letting her home be burgled. I don’t have a number for her so I’ve taken the keys in and left a note on the door.

Lock the door and take them in. This is one of my biggest fears, because before I was given HRT for perimenopause, my mind was so bad that I left my keys in the front door, TWICE.

Haven't done it since, thank goodness.

Oops. Your poor friend! I wouldn’t do that though they probably did it without thinking. We don’t have letterboxes so that’s one mistake that I can’t make.

Is the neighbour ok? Just wondering if worth grabbing another neighbour or two and checking if nobody in and hurt?

TY78910 · 04/02/2026 21:46

I’d leave a note but maybe stuck on the door? In case they actually went out rather than in.

I was thinking the same the last thing you want to do is lock the neighbour in the house if they are hurt at least nip in shout them and have a quick check before locking the door

TheWillToSurvive · 04/02/2026 21:49

Weirdly, I see keys in doors all the time. It’s a bit of a running joke in my family. One evening I was out for a walk with the dog and came across three houses with keys in the door. It’s mad. I always knock in though there have been a couple of occasions I’ve had to take the keys and leave a note. I feel like a bit of a guardian angel.

ShakyBake · 04/02/2026 21:51

I'd do what any other sane person would and let myself in and make a sandwich, put kettle on and watch some TV. When she comes back ask if she has any biscuits.

I’ve shouted, knocked and buzzed. There’s no answer. Her car is still there but her home is in darkness so I suspect that she’s gone out with friends or family. A note has been left at the front entrance too.

Husband has also regularly left keys in the door, one time his set of my car keys, immobiliser lock, and his door key was lost.

Turned the house upside down, emptied dustbin, and kitchen bin, never found.
Even when we moved, and packed it didn’t turn up.

I assume he’d left it in the lock, as he’d driven home and got in the house,

I also assume our horrible neighbour opposite took it.

Ive also seen forgotten keys in doors, and knocked and handed them to residents, whilst on dog walks.

Most people leave keys in the door on the way in, not on the way out.

Ah, perhaps am worried over nothing because of what happened here, but I had a neighbour pass away a few years ago, not seen him for a couple of days so phoned the police for a welfare check. He'd died upstairs on his way to the loo. Hopefully you'll see lights soon or her car move.

HenDilemma · 05/02/2026 09:56

Update. Neighbour is fine so that’s a relief . I just saw her and gave her keys back. She was very grateful. Thanks all.
