Los Gigantes is lovely. We drive 5 hours to visit people then 5 hours back on the same day - go for it - enjoy the sun xx

ImJustFineTYVM · 03/02/2026 12:35

Definitely. I went for work in winter twice for 2 nights and it didn't feel like work and the sunshine was such a tonic.

tanstaafl · 03/02/2026 12:39

Just understand that the last morning will be an early start to get the transfer back to the airport, they like to get you there 2 hours before the flight and it’s 45-60 mins from Los Gigantes to Tenerife South airport. Longer if there’s other pick ups from local hotels.

In this case, stick with the coach transfer as a taxi would be expensive.
When we go to Tenerife, we go to Golf del sur or Costa silencio -- both short taxi rides.
It's lovely in Los Gigantes.

ForPinkDuck · 03/02/2026 12:51

Los Gigantes is really nice. You can do it all in the time you have.

Rayqueen2026 · 03/02/2026 12:52

We just got back from a week in Tenerife £174 pp from Newcastle airport self catering had a lovely time but ah the warmth was amazing didn't want to leave but wouldn't go for just 3 days

I happily drive 4/5 hours to see family for a weekend but that’s all it is, we need to leave the house 3 hours before a flight, add in an hour on the other side (minimum as the queues at Tenerife to get through border control can be crazy on a bad day) and it’s actually 8 hours which I wouldn’t consider driving for a long weekend!

Precisely. A drive in this country isn't comparable to flying abroad. We do a 3 and a bit hour drive to visit my elderly FIL as a day trip at least once most weeks. I used to drive my DS sports training over 100 miles after school once a week. At busy times of the year that could take me nearly 3 hours to get there, though usually only about 2 on the way back. But 5 hours in one evening anyway. I'm not shy about driving long distances. But as you say, that's it. When I get there I don't have to park miles away, get a bus to the terminal, stand in multiple queues and all the other hassle that often goes with air travel.
Obviously it's an entirely personal decision and (as long as you don't think too hard about the environmental impact!) it's neither right nor wrong to opt for a long journey for a short break. It depends on how you view the cost v benefit. For me, 2 days in Tenerife wouldn't be worth it but I would and indeed have made long journeys to attend specific events that other people would probably think ridiculous.
But it's unrealistic to equate a 4 hour flight with a 4 hour drive. Last time I flew into Liverpool we sat on the tarmac for the best part of an hour before they brought stairs and then the queue for passport control was probably 2 hours. At least I didn't have checked luggage or I would have been even longer! Then it was just a matter of getting my car and driving the 3 hours home. The time I'd spent in the air was far less than the time either side. My DH recently missed a flight due to massive airport queues despite arriving 3 hours early and only having hand luggage. That made for a very long day! Obviously if you have short transfer times and are lucky with queues it won't be that bad but I'd say that a 4 hour flight time is easily twice that in door to door time for many people, often more.
Sounds like OP wants to go, in which case, why not? But she asked if other people would do it, and I wouldn't.

ExpertInAbsolutelyZero · 03/02/2026 12:56

Yes, but Elevenerife will be better 🤪

lulu55xxx · 03/02/2026 12:58

@Myswweetchild last time we went to Tenerife we stayed in golf Del sur at the Bahia fantasia but it was cloudy and windy the whole time
Hoping around the other way will be nicer

We’re going to Lanzarote next week for a 3 night break. It’s cheaper and faster than getting the train to London. 😂

Where do you live that your closest airport is a 3 hour drive? Mid wales I assume?

leaflikebrew · 03/02/2026 13:11

It's a no from me. 16 degrees ain't worth it.

hby9628 · 03/02/2026 13:23

Yes I would definitely do this. As soon as you step off that plane you’ll get that lovely relaxed holiday feeling. Go for it.

Edenmum2 · 03/02/2026 13:27

It’s alright if you like big rocks

lulu55xxx · 03/02/2026 13:37

@leaflikebrewit’s been 22/23 degrees …assuming by March it will be slightly warmer too

TartanMammy · 03/02/2026 13:39

Personally I think the flight is too long for just 3 days. Tenerife airport can get very very busy so you'll need to arrive well ahead of your flight home.

We stayed at los Gigantes last year, it was lovely! But the transfer was long so get a private transfer if you can to save time.

Bogofftosomewherehot · 03/02/2026 13:55

Flight times makes it unattractive to me. I'd look for easier departure and later return.
I was in Spain this weekend - booked literally day before as I saw that the weather was going to be 20-21 degrees. Well worth it. 7am flight out, and 6pm flight home, so the days we were there were full with quality time there.

ThePoshUns · 03/02/2026 14:02

Sounds like a nice little break , I’d do it! Anything to get away from this rain!

sundayvibeswig22 · 03/02/2026 14:04

Yes I would to it.

ScrollingLeaves · 03/02/2026 14:08

I would do it, yes.

But just check you can get to the airport early enough on the way back. How would you do it? Is there a shuttle, or would it be public transport, or a taxi? What time would you need to get up?

ThejoyofNC · 03/02/2026 14:24

leaflikebrew · 03/02/2026 13:11

Given that it's currently 19 degrees there, you're wrong about that.

ThePoshUns · 03/02/2026 14:26

There are currently some issues arriving and leaving Tenerife South airport as they’ve installed fingerprints ID machines. Causing queues in and out!

DumboNoMore · 03/02/2026 14:35

We do this often. We do 3 nights in one of the Canary Islands twice every winter. This winter we have been to fuerteventura and Gran Canaria for some sun to warm us up!

We don’t take the kids, so it’s just DP and I. Takes 10 mins to pack a bag for 3 nights.
We usually try to catch flight times similar to what you’ve found and found it perfect. We arrive at the destination with enough time to check in, explore a little and get some dinner and then we have 2 full days. With a 10am flight home, I don’t quite catch the afternoon school run but I’m certainly home for kids tea time.
I am very lucky that I have a very enthusiastic MIL who genuinely enjoys looking after the kids/house/animals for me and is always keen to help out.

However, with kids I wouldn’t go away for less than 5 nights
