Do you have a matching sofa set?

We’ve just bought a new sofa, a “3-2-1” set.

However I’ve realised most of my friends go for more mismatched/ mixed set ups. Is matching furniture dated??

I think possibly it is a bit dated. I have matching sofas so being dated doesn’t bother me though!

Squirrelchops1 · 02/02/2026 15:21

No, but that's due to only being 2 of us and our 1 sofa being a statement piece. We don't have another sofa, just a chair in a completely different style and fabric

Ours matches i hate mismatched furniture

Yes. Our 3 seater settee matches the two armchairs that normally live in the living room.

If we have extra people round, the extra chairs brought in don't match.

Furlane · 02/02/2026 15:41

No, and thinking about it, I don’t know anyone who does now. My parents used to, but they mixed it up when they inherited some lovely pieces from my grandparents.

WallaceinAnderland · 02/02/2026 15:46

We've just bought two completely different 2 seater sofas and a separate chair which is different again. They don't match but they compliment each other.

HollyhockDays · 02/02/2026 15:51

It works more in my friends houses as that look is sort of what their whole room / house is!! No one apart from us ever sees the room in question though so it doesn’t really matter!! As long as we are happy I guess.

Yes having sets of any furniture is dated. We have 2 sofas from sofa.com that complement each other but are different, plus a victorian button back chair.

Chasingsquirrels · 02/02/2026 16:05

Buy what you like to furnish your house, fashion is irrelevant.

TheKateColumbo · 02/02/2026 16:37

I think matching can look great but also can look overkill.
Most people I know who have a suite also have everything else in an accent colour which can look kind of showroomish.
However some people I know have matching sofas either in strong colours or very neutral colours which complement or contrast with the other decor rather than match it and it looks great.
I have the same sofa but different colours in one room and completely mismatched in another room. I love how it looks but it’s not for everyone.

Nourishinghandcream · 02/02/2026 16:49

Everyone has their own style choices do don't be influenced by what is "in", do it for yourself.

We have both.
The family room (where we spend most of our time anyway) has mismatched sofa & chairs.
The living room has a matching suit. A huge corner sofa and separate chairs in a nice bold colour (which I would never have been brave enough to go for when I was younger).
I think we went against "trend" not only with the colour but with the fact it is a corner sofa but I couldn't care less.😁

Ohpleeeease · 02/02/2026 17:09

Everything dates eventually, OP. There was a time when mid century furniture filled the junk shops and skips.

Think of yourself as a trendsetter, matching furniture may be just around the corner.

How big is your sample size? (ie how many houses have you been in?) as I find it astonishing that you don't know anyone who has a 3 piece suite, or other set in a different seating combination.

babasaclover · 02/02/2026 18:00

Matching is perfectly normal in my opinion. It’s only an American shows that you see mismatched furniture that is deliberate.

Statsquestion2 · 02/02/2026 18:03

Yes ours is matching, I can’t stand mismatched…but that’s just me

Giddykiddy · 02/02/2026 18:07

No - 2 living rooms - one has 2 sofas and a chair / same style 2 different fabrics- other has 3 sofas in 2 fabrics - two of those were my late mothers which I had recovered and with new cushions they go well with a sofa I had in a similar style but different colour- you be you though as long as you like them that's all that matters

HollyhockDays · 02/02/2026 18:19

Interestingly all of my friends houses are older (Victorian) houses ours is a new build.

Our family room is sofa and in matching chairs so it’s mix even in our own house.

If a pattern it would look dated imo
I have two exact same size couches in my LR. No chairs, but if I had chairs I would have a different colour, possibly colour and pattern.

Edited

I would say quite a few houses!! But, I guess the sample is a bit skewed as the sample size would be between the ages of 35-45. So, off the top of my head about 20 houses of children’s school friends, 10 houses of nursery friends, 20 houses of my friends and 20 houses of my husband’s friends in the last 8yrs or so. Like I said, my parents had this set up about 15yrs ago, but haven’t see anyone with matching sofas/armchairs since.

DancingNotDrowning · 03/02/2026 11:54

i hate matching three piece suits - all feels a bit Mrs Hinch /footballer wives.

the configurations I have are 2 complementary sofas oposite each other; a sofa with 2 armchairs opposite (the chairs are the same, but they complement rather than match the sofa) and a large sofa with a smaller sofa and two arm chairs (the armchairs are the same and the sofas are the same) in a U shape.

I like fabric and texture and layering in themes rather than blocks of single colours which always feels too intense. Pretty sure I’ve not been to a house with a 3-2-1 set in years

newrubylane · 03/02/2026 11:58

We have a small sofa and matching chair and then a big sofa thats different. I like to mix and match but I think three different seating styles might have been a bit much for the space we have.

Oh really?

GasPanic · 03/02/2026 17:05

I have two matched. It is a bit of a pain because one is hardly used and now the other is falling to bits, so if I want a new matched pair I will effectively be getting rid of a nearly new sofa.

Or transporting it to somewhere in the house where I don't really need a sofa.

Squirrelchops1 · 03/02/2026 18:01

Mine is deliberately mismatched because, in one small room we've managed almost 2 defined areas. Cosy lounge with sofa and tv then a teeny tiny area, with dark wall colouring and art with a chair and lamp we call the 'library'.
All matching with perfectly aligned everything reminds me too much of Dunelm!

MrsLizzieDarcy · 03/02/2026 18:20

I've got 2 sofas in the same fabric, then we've got 4 other chairs and a huge footstool in different fabrics. These fabrics all tone in with the sofa fabric (a large bold Ikat in stain resistant velvet). I work in interiors and love blending textures/colours. I've got 3 different velvets, a chenille weave, and a Morris linen.
