Anyone remember Puddle Lane?

I loved the books when I was a child. I think there was a tv show as well. I remember one 'When the clock struck thirteen' being really mysterious and a bit scary. Also, there was a book called The Sandalwood girl and The Silver river. I think the Sandalwood girl had to find the river to become a real girl again, but I might be wrong. Some books followed each other to make a complete story, but i think there were many different stories about a steeet called Puddle lane where lots of strange things happened and odd characters lived. There was a magician and I think his house was the main focus.

They were bloody well written, as I recall. I was totally enthralled. Not even sure how old I was or when they ended.

Loved Puddle Lane. Mr Puffle and the Gruffle.

We have quite a lot of the books which we happened upon in a charity shop. I think they might be out of print now - they certainly go for high prices on-line.

In the TV programme, the Magician was played by Neil Innes(RIP).

Yes!! Thank you for reigniting a memory!

Yes I used to love this. There are some clips on you tube ❤️

The books have one page for reading the story to your child, and then some simplified, Janet and John style text to encourage reading. I'll find a picture...

I’ve still got my kids’ little collection of Pudding Lane books. Can’t quite bring myself to give them away, even though I wasn’t a fan when I had to read them out loud to them over and over again.

Fond memories now, I guess!

Loved Puddle Lane. I really hope my mum has our old ones not my brother, who will absolutely sell them if he knew they were valuable. Despite not being his.

HampsterCheese90 · 02/02/2026 14:14

You can still buy them online! We recently bought about 20 to help 4yo with reading. He enjoys them far more than the school reading scheme books.

We were reading about Tessa on the flying saucer yesterday 😁

BerthaB · 02/02/2026 14:14

Yes, me! Loved them so much that I've bought loads of them off Amazon to read to my kids. The ones about the Sandalwood Girl and the Silver River were my absolute favourite.

OliviaBonas · 02/02/2026 14:15

You can buy them on Vinted! Charity shops sometimes have them too.

Blarn · 02/02/2026 14:15

We had them read to us at school and I have a couple that were my own copies. I think they were colour coded for reading level? I had one green and a couple blue.

I adored my Puddle Lane books. I had most of the blue and green ones but my absolute favourite was The Wideawake Mice

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 02/02/2026 14:33

Mr Gotobed? Was he in them? And a house at the end of the lane and a disappearing monster?

Brilka8 · 02/02/2026 14:34

Yes I had Christmas in Puddle Lane

Yes

Stumbleine · 02/02/2026 14:34

Oh I loved reading these!

Holdmeclosertinydancer2018 · 02/02/2026 14:35

Loved Mr Go to bed as a child, read it so many times. Ah, to be that innocent again 😊

NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen · 02/02/2026 15:09

Yes I remember it, I loved it at the time, though when I looked it up on YouTube as an adult I realised it was a bit spookier than I remembered from childhood!

I don’t think I was target audience as I’d have been around 8/9 when it started…at the time my grandma lived on a road called Middle Lane but the lane was very uneven & often had puddles & we’d nicknamed it Puddle Lane before the series even started, so it seemed rather appropriate, & I think that’s why she recorded it for me whilst I was at school. I remember finding it quite endearing even though I was probably a bit too old for it.

MyKindHiker · 02/02/2026 15:11

There's a restaurant near me which gives your bill at the end of a meal tucked into a puddle lane book. Guess it's a bit of retro / cute but always brings a tear to my eye as I remember reading the books as a child!

MyKindHiker · 02/02/2026 15:12

I really hope if I re-read them they aren't secretly racist like so many things I loved as a child sadly are on a re-read!

Abhannmor · 02/02/2026 15:27

I love reading those books to the children. The Sandalwood Girl was a particular favourite. Out of print now but you might see some on eBay or other sites. I managed to find a dozen or so a few years ago.

Yes ! They were in different key stages. Brilliant idea.No pp I don't recall any unconscious racism or sexist stereotyping ?

PaperBlueCornflower · 02/02/2026 15:48

The Wideawake Mice! Diverse children in Victorian garb! Cats, magic and a secret garden.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 02/02/2026 15:57

It's lovely that so many people remember them! I agree they were a bit spooky looking back. I will see if I can find some.
