I thought it was Liverpool. I'm sure I heard it in Brookside first

Cathmawr · 01/02/2026 20:06

Yes heard it often growing up in West Lancs. Meaning mardy

Greenbeanmcgee · 01/02/2026 20:07

Thanks everyone. It’s new to me so your responses have been very helpful. Mardy was unfamiliar to me until relatively recently too. I wonder if there’s a crossover between where the two terms are used?

A colleague used to use it; she was from Wigan. So Lancashire?

ResusciAnnie · 01/02/2026 20:10

Oh I definitely thought it mean ‘to have an erection’ 😂 but I think I’m confused with ‘have a chub on’ and the phallic appearance of a corn cob…

nixon1976 · 01/02/2026 20:10

We used it in B'ham

Icequeen01 · 01/02/2026 20:11

I’ve obviously been saying it wrong all these years! I always say ‘has a right gob on’ 😂

Ohhh yeah maybe that’s it too. I’ve definitely heard chub too though.

HA! All those moody people who I actually thought had erections 😂 must never have noticed the phrase in relation to a woman!

PickledMuffin · 01/02/2026 20:14

i always thought midlands 🤔

ZenNudist · 01/02/2026 20:14

Yy to Lancashire and greater Manchester using it to mean looking annoyed.

NorthernDancer · 01/02/2026 20:25

West Midlands. Same meaning as everywhere else

Arlanymor · 01/02/2026 20:26

Darlinghag · 01/02/2026 19:46

Use it in south wales too, and same meaning as others have said.

Yep South Wales for me - means you're having a bloody big strop!

Heyhelga · 01/02/2026 20:28

Lived in Devon all my life and I've never once heard anyone use the phrase.

fluffiphlox · 01/02/2026 20:28

South Wales for me too. Means you’re having a big sulk, tantrum-adjacent.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 01/02/2026 20:33

Liverpool. Yes- grumpy and moody

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/02/2026 20:33

TheGriffle · 01/02/2026 19:59

I’m South Yorkshire and would say ‘so and so’s got a right cob on’ basically they’re being a mardy bugger.

Also Derbyshire.

Maraudingmarauders · 01/02/2026 20:35

Midlands - bring a grump (I’m in my 30s)

That is also a phrase - but it means a loud mouth.

WonderingAndOverthinking · 01/02/2026 20:36

Black Country here. Means someone’s being stroppy/sulky.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/02/2026 20:38

Got a right cob on. London.

Ever met a cob? It's the name for a male swan - they get well garrity if you disturb them when they've got cygnets. It's also a name for particularly sturdy (and spectacularly arsey when finally provoked beyond the point of no return) horses.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 01/02/2026 20:39

Mardy is more whingy and miserable

familyissues12345 · 01/02/2026 20:40

Yes I do, I grew up moving around the country so not sure where I picked it up from. DH and DS’s both think I’m funny when I say it Grin, we’re all now in the South.

Aaah, makes sense but I’ve been using it in the wrong context!
