Just got scammed out of almost 1k

Please be so careful of phone calls from your bank. Always call them back, as caller ID can be faked. My actual bank said they had never seen this scam. They duplicated everything, all the spiels, the robot connecting voice, the hold music.

Second month of being paid after 5 months of no income. Back to nothing again. FFS.

Calling the bank back is NOT the way to go.
Scammers set up a system where it looks as if you are calling your bank, but in fact the call is diverted to the scammer.
The only way is to go into a branch of the bank and not do anything based on a phone call.

You can just use another phone.

They pretend they are your bank and can even use a bank number so it looks as if it is your bank when they ask you to call to check.
Have you not heard of this?
Never call them back!

Yeah exactly it's just a moment's inattention. I find it quite incredible that people are still blaming victims of fraud. Obviously the banks want to push that narrative but they're the ones who want us all to have paperless and indeed person-less banking, while designing systems that judging by the amount of money lost to scams are wide open to theft.

Now the banks have persuaded us all that online - including downloading bank apps on our phones making them more appealing to criminals - is far more convenient, they are busily closing bricks and mortar branches leaving us more dependent than ever to online services.

My DH was joking that the bank’s plan was not to have any physical bank premises / branches so that it would be impossible for customers to do a bank run. No ability to show up in person and demand your money. Northern rock wasn’t so long ago.

From their end, they could just temporarily disable the app.

It’s all very well saying all of this, before it happened to my husband I would have probably thought similar, but no one can account for human error in a crisis or under pressure etc.

You’re right in that life is hard, but life events don’t happen in isolation to one another. Like I say, I hope that nothing ever happens to you or any of your family which hinders your ability to make sound judgment in the moment.

edited: I hadn’t read all of your post before replying - I can genuinely say I don’t think anyone deserves anything bad happening to them, more that I would have thought it was pretty obvious not to fall for a scam but only when it happens to you do you realise just how easy it can be. Your posts are pretty mean and vindictive, you can have your opinion and be direct but the sheer vitriol is pretty something… I hope you have a nice day…

Having your account hacked is totally different to giving up your account number, name, DOB, bank code. Mothers maiden name etc.. That shit is next level stupidity.
Being hacked is awful and not your fault. Handing obviously sensitive information to Mohamed who called from the "bank" but doesn't know your name or account number is YOUR fault.
Not the banks, hell it isn't even Mohammed's fault you fell for his shit. He had to call 60 people to get an idiot.
Seriously. There's genuine fraud and there's some dope giving away info.

Banks do call customers, I've done it as a job! They will never ask you to give out account numbers or passwords. I was legitimately called by my bank a couple of months ago, as they'd picked up on fraudulent transactions on my card. I checked the phone number they were calling from was legit before proceeding with the call. They stopped the transactions, cancelled my card and resent me a new one.

The best thing to do is call the bank back after checking the number, scammers will pressure you to try to not hang up, but a legit caller from the fraud department will be patient and want to you feel comfortable that the call is genuine.

why did you think it was genuine?

They didn't ask me to transfer anything. They told me the OTP was a mobile verification to reset my mobile banking as my account was compromised. When the OTP came through he was the one who gave it to me, and the bank call was an automated voice saying 'say or key in your code.'

Thanks so much for this. They told me they would need to retrieve the money from the receiving banks if those accounts still had money in them...and did not sound confident that I would get any money back...I will raise this if it comes to that

I work in a fraud department and the rules are starting to change around scams. If your bank will not raise as fraud then ask for a formal complaint to be raised. If they don’t refund as a resolution you can then take the complaint to the financial ombudsman and they will investigate and potentially tell the bank to refund.

This type of scam is everywhere at the moment, there’s lots of versions of it, it’s called an impersonation scam. I hope you get your money back!

My DH got a call a few years back that made him suspicious .

One thing he found out was he hung up they didn't so if he'd phoned back he'd have got them ( I don't know how it works but he got back to the scammer ) .
Luckily he used a different phone to contact the bank .

They were very plausible didn't ask for details bit managed to find out the name of bank .
The plan then is they send a courier from TSB/Santander/Barclays whatever to pick up your card .

I was scammed at a CashPoint , so angry with myself and mostly with the scammer .

I’ve heard of this before with them not having up and waiting for you to dial the number in, and then pretending they’re the official number. This would only work on a house phone wouldn’t it? I haven’t used a house phone in years, but I remember doing this to people when we were younger or somebody accidentally not hanging up and being able to hear things in their house.

Mine is a general bank no. for everything or ring 159 which is the recognised no for bank fraud, obviously only an idiot would ring the number that called them

They don't set up a system, there's no risk to making sure the previous call has disconnected (can you even keep the line open on a mobile) and ringing the number for the banks own website.

The old fashioned not hanging up the phone was a simple mechanical device easily circuited by calling a different number first and if your mum answered the phone with Hello, ABC Bank you know you're being scammed

If anyone claiming to be your bank says this, don't respond.
Wait till you are home or better still go into the branch if there is one and discuss face to face.

Who do you bank with? It's happened to me quite recently with NatWest and they sent the money straight back while they investigated. I had to fill in a form with the transactions listed, and the money was back in my account within 24 hours. Keep on at your bank.

That's basic number spoofing, they haven't done anything sophisticated and they can't intercept you calling back the genuine number

Info for anyone in the future who aren't sure whether the person on the line is your bank:

Put the phone down.
RING 159
Ask to speak to: Name of bank.
They will put you through and you can ask if you've had a call from your bank.

This advice was given on the Martin Lewis Money programme btw.
