How much would you expect to pay for a new bathroom?

Average sized with room for bath/shower (not separate) completely refurbished
Have had 2 quotes so far - one just over £9000, the other just under £8000 for the same work.
Just wondering what people have paid recently.

@Rosemary61 They're excellent squeegee hand tool down where the shower is and dry off with towel. You can get fancy feature ones, I went for light marble effect. I used to work as a domestic house cleaner filled me with dread trying to scrub mould off tiled shower cabinets. I also went for a larger enclosure to save squeezing in and out.

Thanks, this is really helpful. Would you happen to have the link to the one you chose? We were going for marble tiles but may change to panelling

Ours was about £6,600 last year.

PurpleFlower1983 · 01/02/2026 09:53

Sounds about right, my BIL just paid £6000 for a very small bathroom, shower only.

We've just had ours done for £8k, sounds a similar size as yours. Original quote was £9.5k but we negotiated them down a bit and changed the spec. of some things we'd chosen.
We probably could have done it for less but the company we went with organised everything for us so we didn't need to coordinate different companies/trades people. They ripped the old bathroom back to the brick, completely replaced everything. Fully tiled. They did a great job, I felt like it was a fair price for the service.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 01/02/2026 10:02

I was quoted 10k ore covis so I would expect more now and I am near sheffield so no exactly a massively wealthy area either!

My parents have just had their main bathroom and ensuite done and admittedly have gone high soec and future proofed with age related adaptations, but it cost them the best part of 25k

Fupoffyagrasshole · 01/02/2026 10:02

We bought the stuff ourselves (just sink & loo and unit in the b&q sale) and a bath side (our bath is fine so we don’t need to replace really)

paid around 1200 for this

got a handy man putting it in over about 2 days £500

will get the floors done separately at some point soon(just lino currently so easy to replace)

we had all sorts of mad quotes from various plumbers in the 8-10k mark which we don’t have.

so we are just getting this sort of basic job done and it will do the trick for us

JamesClyman · 01/02/2026 10:52

£8K last year inc gutting the old one and some new pipework and electrics (loo, shower and light moved) plus repainted the ceiling.

user1476613140 · 01/02/2026 12:34

11k for wet room but that's because a WC was being extended (cupboard wall was knocked through which extended the room). The cupboard area formed our shower area of the wet room. Getting older and didn't want a bath downstairs.
The company cleared away all the debris. Expensive but we don't have time to do all these things ourselves. There has to be a compromise somewhere.

MarshaMarshaMarsha · 01/02/2026 12:41

About £9k last summer. Everything ripped out, fully tiled (v large tiles so minimal grout), wood-effect floor, new spotlights, bath, shower screen, wall-hung storage sink, toilet, over-bath shower and painted ceiling. We prob could have done it for £6-7k if we had got everything ourselves and sourced a fitter but having one company do it all for us made it completely stress free. Took about 8 full days.

Fontet · 01/02/2026 12:44

14000 for main bathroom and en-suite. Total refurb. Expensive

NewShoes · 01/02/2026 12:45

Ours was 8000 three years ago- fairly basic, nothing too fancy!

Iliketulips · 01/02/2026 12:59

Had ours done this time last year yo include shower over bath, sink, taps, toilet, flooring, towel radiator, about a third tiled, touching up plaster, disposal via skip, and then fitting shelf/toilet roll holder/hooks provided by us. Original quote from Wickes was £6,300, but they seriously messed us around, so went with a local chap who we paid £6,600 to.

Tonissister · 01/02/2026 13:08

We're near London and had a £10k quote from a plumber we know is very reasonable. He refurbished an ensuite last autumn (new bath, basin, flooring, taps, showerhead and radiator but no new tiling or shower) for only £4k. But a whole new bathroom would be 10 and I can't see us getting lower quotes in this area.

MiniCoopers · 01/02/2026 14:20

We paid just under £10K for our en-suite last year. Complete rip out, some walls down on either end (plasterboard not real walls). B&Q cupboards but we got a really good quality shower, shower tray and glass door. It’s almost twice the length of the old shower and lovely and powerful. I also got very nice tiles but my builder hated them as it took him ages to tile with them 😀

Isitoveryet25 · 01/02/2026 14:22

We had a new bathroom fitted and plumbed from scratch (part of a renovation, no previous plumbing)

all in it was £12k - included a free standing bath, separate walk in shower, all plumbing, tiling, work, everything. London, 3 years ago.

elephantskiss · 01/02/2026 14:28

About £10k for toilet, sink with drawer unit, 2 wall cabinets and a bath (small bathroom, no shower), half tiled walls and LVT flooring. Other quotes were £14k+.

I was naively expecting it to be around £4k.

GameOfJones · 01/02/2026 14:32

I think that sounds about right to be honest.

We are in Berkshire and had our family bathroom and ensuite completely refitted last October. It cost us roughly £15k for both, the ensuite being slightly cheaper than the main bathroom and with some costs shared e.g. keeping the tiles and flooring the same in both, only needing one skip for both bathrooms etc.

That included taking everything back to the plaster, moving the bath and toilet and moving two radiators. We saved a bit of money buying a job lot of tiles that were on sale and going with vinyl flooring rather than tiled or laminate..... but it's still an expensive business!

tedibear · 01/02/2026 15:14

We have just done a tiny en-suite recently. It was £7.5k. Fully tiled floor and walls. We did choose a nicer shower, floating toilet and floating sink. So we cld saved a bit by having cheaper ones but I’m not surprised at all by ur quotes they sound about right.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 01/02/2026 15:17

Two years ago I was quoted 4.5k just to take out a bath, fit a new shower tray and tile around. The majority was labour for the tiling (my entire bathroom is tiled so there was no getting round it). I decided to leave the bath where it is.

LastSeenDancing · 01/02/2026 15:21

We had 2 new bathrooms last year.

One smallish with toilet, shower, sink, fully tiled was £9k

Bigger one with toilet, two sinks, bath, large shower, fully tiled was £17k

Mummy2one2016 · 01/02/2026 18:01

Just had ours done and paid around £6000 time it was finshed. Complete refurbishment, everything new, changed from small shower to a bath with shower over it. This price includes a new bathroom door and flooring. We're in SW Scotland

TattiePants · 01/02/2026 18:09

That seems pretty reasonable. We redid our smallish ensuite in October and that came to just over £9k. We’re based in the north east but we did chose some high end wall and floor tiles.

Bunnycat101 · 01/02/2026 19:13

We had two complete refits for around £15k each- fitting. We purchased our own fixtures and fittings and went high end. Labour for one was £6k and the other £8k as one was a bit more complex.

We had two quotes that came up at £70-75k for the two bathrooms and nearly died.

JosephineCornwall · 01/02/2026 19:32

So many variables…! 🙄

Just doing a full refurb of my farmhouse and just finished main en-suite:

First and second fix plumbing,
Lusso stone vanity/WC/freestanding bath.
Crosswater fittings,
XL towel rad,
Wet room,
Underfloor heating mat,
Fully tiled with mitred finishing,
Super large wet room,
Lighting

Tiler (labour and grout) = £2.5k
Plumbing and electrical labour = £0.00 as partner did the work
All materials = £15k

OverwhelmedAndUnderprepared · 01/02/2026 19:58

Surely it depends on
A. Which part of the country you're in
B. The size of the bathroom and scope of the work
C. The spec of everything you put in it

We have just spent £21k which was half materials, half labour.
A. Cambridge (where everything including tradespeople costs £££)
B. Large bathroom, big job including moving the doorway, changing the position of the bath and shower, building a half stud wall to hide pipe work, plastering the artex ceiling as well as the walls where tiles had been removed, installing an inline extractor fan (as there was nothing at all), tiling full height around the bath/shower and half height everywhere else plus the floor.
C. We went for high spec everything, Bette bath with shower over, Laufen vanity, basin and toilet, lovely but expensive mirrored cabinet and towel rad, etc.

We won't be redoing it in a hurry! Delighted with it though, worth it IMO.
