If you WFH or have sedentary job - would you find this useful? (honest thoughts pls)

Hiya – I’d really appreciate some honest views on an app idea.

During Covid, when I was WFH much more, I realised I was sitting for very long stretches. With all the talk about sitting being “the new smoking”, I started thinking how useful it would be to have something that simply reminds you to stand up and move a bit during the day.

As I went further down the research rabbit hole, I was genuinely surprised by the science around very short bursts of activity – aka “exercise snacks” – things like 1-2 minutes of more vigorous movement, which seem to improve health markers across the board and potentially support health and quality of life later on.

This really struck a chord with me personally, as my dad died suddenly at 60, largely because he didn’t look after his own health (ironically, he was a GP).

So the idea I’m working on is an app aimed at people with sedentary jobs or who work from home (or who care about your future health). It gives gentle nudges during the day for:

short bursts of vigorous exercise (e.g. jumping jacks, squats)
mobility and strength moves (e.g. wall sits, planks)
breathing exercises (e.g. box breathing)
mindful moments (e.g. a short nature break or pause)

Everything is backed by science/research, and you choose how long the movements last (30 seconds to 2 minutes), which ones you do, and how often you’re prompted. You can snooze if you’re busy, and there’s light encouragement like streaks rather than pressure.

My genuine questions are:
is this something you’d find useful?
would you ever pay a small monthly amount if you felt it genuinely helped your future health?

Just trying to work out whether this is actually useful or a nice idea that wouldn’t get used in real life 🤔

I have a written to-do list at my desk where I add my exercise to do for the day as well.

Reassurancells · 28/01/2026 15:11

I wouldn’t use this.

If I’m busy, I need to concentrate until I get to a natural break and I walk my dog at elevenses, lunchtime and 3pm.

sorry.

Meadowfinch · 28/01/2026 15:13

No, I just go for a walk at lunchtime if in the office, or for a run if wfh. I don't need a reminder.

My Apple Watch reminds me every hour if I haven’t moved. If I’m in a meeting, I would just ignore the reminder anyway. It’s not an app I would pay for.

I’m going to buck the trend and say yes I would use this !! I already have a bit of a print out I’d had chat gpt to do for me but still needs me to trigger it and decide what to do. Being able to specify whether I’m wfh or wfo and level of move ie can I be vigorous or more subdued in the exercise. So I’m a yes !

@thekingfisher Delighted to hear that! Thanks for letting me know! When it’s live, I’ll send you a code to download free of charge and you can let me know what you think (any feedback would be fab) 😁

Thanks for the other comments - you sound a lot more organised and self-motivated than me 😆 (and all the getting up you do will be invaluable for your future health 👍🏼)

No. I worked a routine with my office mates and we set a timer - we've all just had a little break to do squats.

SirChenjins · 28/01/2026 15:22

I wouldn't, sorry - I just set my alarm as a reminder and then do a short YouTube video, there's lots of free ones to choose from, or chase the dog up and down the stairs

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 28/01/2026 15:23

How much seed money do you have for this btw? Any knowledge of app creation? Marketing? Secure development lifecycle?

App ideas are ten a penny, actually profitable apps are not!

GrooveArmada · 28/01/2026 15:23

No. I don't need another app to sit and read. The same content is available everywhere for free. Less screen time not more is needed.

BrendaSmall · 28/01/2026 15:25

You can do that with an Apple Watch or Fitbit

sittingtoomuch · 28/01/2026 15:25

PurpleLovecats · 28/01/2026 14:25

I would quite like it if it gave ideas of what to do, like as you said, squats or the like.
I wouldn’t pay for it though…

@PurpleLovecats If I gave you a code to download for free once it’s in App Store, would that sway it?! Just a “yes fab” or “nah it’s a bit pants” would be your only payment 😆

I assume you have paid mumsnet for all this research and engagement?

LavenderBlue19 · 28/01/2026 15:26

No. I hate being interrupted and I know I would just press ignore - it would be yet more unwanted noise. I go for a walk or a potter in the garden if I need a brain break.

Also wouldn't be doing jumping jacks in a regular bra / no bra on WFH days with no meetings 😂😵‍💫

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 28/01/2026 15:26

I would actually find this useful but not enough to pay for it. Because I know I could expend a tiny bit more effort and set named reminders for myself... even if I haven't actually done that. Sorry for the illogical psychology OP.

oustedbymymate · 28/01/2026 15:26

My Apple Watch does this already

sittingtoomuch · 28/01/2026 15:27

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/01/2026 14:26

Yeah I'd go for that!

@dizzydizzydizzy Ah great to hear! I’ll send a code once it’s live if you’re interested and you can download for free ☺️

I do pay an annual subscriptions for apps if I find them useful, or a one off download fee.
I wouldn't pay a monthly sub for it.

I currently set reminders on my fitbit.

I like the idea of giving you the exercise and the benefits to that particular exercise.

I don't like it needing my phone as that is a distraction and it might be in another room/bottom of my bag.

Good luck with it

ImFineItsAllFine · 28/01/2026 15:30

Maybe - my smartwatch already gives me a nudge to get up and move if I've been sat still for too long but it might be more interesting if it suggested an exercise like 'do 10 squats'.

For me I think it would need watch integration, if it was only on my phone and I was working I'd ignore it.

ElectoralControversy · 28/01/2026 15:35

It does sound interesting but I'm not sure I'd pay for it

Theoretically my Garmin would tell me to move every so often but I have that turned off

Have you seen the pomodoro app? I like that, it's simple and understated and just runs in the background and gently pings when it's time to take a break or go back to work

You could set your WFH days and have it automatically run then... not sure anyone's going to stretch in the office?
Having said that, I have just been doing hip CARs waiting for my printing😳 but I'm confident I'm not the weirdest person in our office

AelinAG · 28/01/2026 15:37

I can just set up a shortcut on my phone to remind me in line with the reminder I get from Apple

SushiForMe · 28/01/2026 15:38

Yes, I think there is a market. Have you checked the Finch app? It offers something similar, more globally about self care but it includes breathing exercised etc. I guess your edge could be the « physical breaks » that you describe.

7238SM · 28/01/2026 15:41

No, I wouldn't pay for it and would be unlikely to do it even if it was free. I'm only in my 40's but have arthritis is my knees (ex dancer and ex athlete) so can't physically do squats and some movements that most people can. Plus, once you have a basic- squats, lunges, star jumps etc, why would I need to be told day after day the steps again? You could just mix it up yourself.

I do enjoy chair yoga when working though. Its only 10mins but helps to stretch and prevent strain for me.

Edited to say that I too don't wear a bra when WFH, and having to constantly put one on for 2mins of jumping about would put me off too.

capybaraforlife · 28/01/2026 15:41

This exists already, we've just signed up for the service as a corporate.

It's called Pleaz.the idea is that you do it in meetings.

I'll be honest with you, the science behind it is amazing BUT the reality is no one wants to do it....

Flicktick · 28/01/2026 15:41

The problem is that people won't pay for apps. Then they get annoyed that the app is bloated with adverts.
My watch tells me to get moving, anyone who's motivated will know what they need to do.
I can't see this actually making money.
