If you WFH or have sedentary job - would you find this useful? (honest thoughts pls)

Hiya – I’d really appreciate some honest views on an app idea.

During Covid, when I was WFH much more, I realised I was sitting for very long stretches. With all the talk about sitting being “the new smoking”, I started thinking how useful it would be to have something that simply reminds you to stand up and move a bit during the day.

As I went further down the research rabbit hole, I was genuinely surprised by the science around very short bursts of activity – aka “exercise snacks” – things like 1-2 minutes of more vigorous movement, which seem to improve health markers across the board and potentially support health and quality of life later on.

This really struck a chord with me personally, as my dad died suddenly at 60, largely because he didn’t look after his own health (ironically, he was a GP).

So the idea I’m working on is an app aimed at people with sedentary jobs or who work from home (or who care about your future health). It gives gentle nudges during the day for:

short bursts of vigorous exercise (e.g. jumping jacks, squats)
mobility and strength moves (e.g. wall sits, planks)
breathing exercises (e.g. box breathing)
mindful moments (e.g. a short nature break or pause)

Everything is backed by science/research, and you choose how long the movements last (30 seconds to 2 minutes), which ones you do, and how often you’re prompted. You can snooze if you’re busy, and there’s light encouragement like streaks rather than pressure.

My genuine questions are:
is this something you’d find useful?
would you ever pay a small monthly amount if you felt it genuinely helped your future health?

Just trying to work out whether this is actually useful or a nice idea that wouldn’t get used in real life 🤔

No sorry. If I want to do short bursts of exercise I would just do so. Not sure why there has to be an app for everything nowadays.

Babyboomtastic · 28/01/2026 14:22

Honestly, no. If I wanted that I could just set up reminders on Alexa. I have enough notifications in my phone as it is. Sorry, not for me. I also don't pay for apps unless they really add something to my life, so it would have to be something very special.

NewYearNewMee · 28/01/2026 14:23

Honestly it wouldn’t be too useful to me most of the time, because if I’m busy and not getting up it’s because I genuinely don’t have the time to. People’s smart watches / rings often do this already, reminding them to get up and move about.

I like the idea behind it, I’m just not sure how practical it is (especially if I’m sedentary in the office - there’s no place to suddenly start jumping jacks haha!).

My Fitbit tells me when it’s time to move. Not sure if I would use this app but I’m sure some people would

SausageRoll2020 · 28/01/2026 14:24

Most smart watches do this already and it's super easy to set reminders through a basic calendar or even recurring alarms.

Your post isn't suggesting anything worth paying for that isn't already available for free 🤷🏻‍♀️

mynameiscalypso · 28/01/2026 14:25

My Apple Watch already tells me to stand up every hour; it always makes me laugh in meetings when everyone with an Apple Watch gets the notification to stand up at the same time and they start jiggling around. I don’t think I need more than that really.

PurpleLovecats · 28/01/2026 14:25

I would quite like it if it gave ideas of what to do, like as you said, squats or the like.
I wouldn’t pay for it though…

Beakthrough · 28/01/2026 14:26

I might find the idea interesting but I'd close it before I got apying for it.

Also I know that if I'm going to do anything useful, the last thing I need is another reason to pick up my phone.

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/01/2026 14:26

Yeah I'd go for that!

Newbie8918 · 28/01/2026 14:27

Smart watches do this already

justaskme · 28/01/2026 14:28

Yes, except I'm difficult and I don't want to be reliant on my phone for anything. All notifications are off and I rarely download apps. I don't have a smart watch and won't be getting one. So wouldn't work for me personally.

If I'm going to be taking exercise snacks from work I'd be better off receiving an email to my work account with the reminder/which exercise to do.

museumum · 28/01/2026 14:30

My Garmin does this already.

Aligirlbear · 28/01/2026 14:33

My Fitbit already does this - wouldn’t need another app - sorry

Mangoandbroccoli · 28/01/2026 14:33

My (garmin) watch already does this… I still ignore all the reminders and then exercise at a time that actually works for me! I imagine someone who is paying for it might be more inclined to do it so they feel they’re getting value for money, but I’m
afraid it’s just not something I’d pay for in the first place, because I have my watch.

Shinyandnew1 · 28/01/2026 14:34

No, I wouldn't download an app for this!

gototogo · 28/01/2026 14:36

No because if I’m working I’m actually working and not going to stop what I’m doing to 1-2 minutes disrupting my concentration. When I’ve finished whatever task I’m on a take a break and do something useful like put washing on. I’m fortunate that I can concentrate for hours I do realise

TwentyFourHoursToTulsa · 28/01/2026 14:40

I would just prompt Chat GPT to nag me every whenever, and to create a list of the exercises I could/should do each break.

I might do that now actually 😆

With the rise of AI, OP, a lot of apps will become redundant. And, as PPs have said, a lot of devices already do what you are suggesting.

sittingtoomuch · 28/01/2026 14:40

Re: the watch responses. Yes, that’s true – watches are great at reminding you to stand. This idea is a bit more about what you do when you break up sitting, based on the research around short bursts of movement or effort, not just standing for a minute. I like to be told exactly what to do and when, otherwise I procrastinate and don’t bother. This is about doing something for future you that’s grounded in science.

OP posts:
Jellybunny56 · 28/01/2026 14:41

My Apple watch does exactly this for £0, other than the cost of the watch obviously but it is years old now, so no I wouldn’t.

NoelEdmondsHairGel · 28/01/2026 14:42

No, I would not liked to be “nudged” all the time. Novelty wears off PDQ and it just becomes annoying.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 28/01/2026 14:43

Lots of apps do this, but I don't use them because (so far as I know) you can't get them to reflect your actual work schedule.

So I have a calendar called "movement" at work, which I review for the coming week and budget around to fit during meetings.

PomPomSugar · 28/01/2026 14:44

My fitbit already does this. And it already pisses me off.

sittingtoomuch · 28/01/2026 14:53

Thanks for your feedback, food for thought. My thinking is if “people can do this for free” killed products, meditation, workout, recipe and budgeting apps wouldn’t exist. They do because convenience beats capability. Interesting points above, so thank you 😊

WhereIsMyLight · 28/01/2026 15:03

I don’t have a smart watch. I ignore reminders on my phone of stuff I need to do anyway so I doubt this would be different.

Yes but everything is an app and everything is a subscription. I think people are getting subscription fatigue. I signed into Facebook yesterday and it asked me if I wanted an ad free subscription. Facebook is very close to the edge of still being of benefit to me (I use it a lot for local groups) but if they ramp up the ads even more because I won’t subscribe that’s probably the final pus I need to give that up. Everything is set up to pay a monthly subscription or we’ll bombard you with ads until you buy pointless crap you don’t need.

thekingfisher · 28/01/2026 15:10

I’m going to buck the trend and say yes I would use this !! I already have a bit of a print out I’d had chat gpt to do for me but still needs me to trigger it and decide what to do. Being able to specify whether I’m wfh or wfo and level of move ie can I be vigorous or more subdued in the exercise. So I’m a yes !
