How can I stop our new house flooding?!

We moved last week and bought the previous owners had some disabilities. There is a bath with a door that opens so you can step in. The first bath my DSs took and as I put DS2 in, DS4 opened the door to walk in and flooded the bathroom! Water was coming through the light in the kitchen below 😩.

Although it's watertight there doesn't seem to be a way you can prevent it from being opened. Obviously we'll now watch DSs like hawks but is there anything else we can do? Eventually we'll get a new bath but it's not in the budget just yet.

Parenting?!!! Tell them they are absolutely NOT to open the door in the bath that mum or dad only do that and when the child is having a bath unless they are a teenager so should have the door shut then YOU or your dh should be already in the bathroom supervising due to safety!

Are you thick as well as nasty? She quite clearly said she was in the room with the kids and it happened in a split second

I don't think this is a parenting issue OP. It sounds like a terrible design and totally unsuitable for kids. If you are going to replace it sooner rather than later then gaffer tape sounds like a good solution.

The point of these baths isn't so much to have a bath but to be able to have a shower without removing the bath and putting in a walk in in shower.

I'm getting one in a couple of months, because I really struggle getting in/out of the bath for a shower, so I can basically just walk in.

Tbh at 4 he probably had an image of being able to walk into the side of the water like a forcefield / in a cartoon.

I can quite imagine my DD at that age not realising the water will come out!

That gorilla tape is very good OP. You don't get much on a roll but it's really strong. I used it to mend our 3 meter swimming pool in the summer and it was brilliant.

Thank you. I've ordered some!

You could see if you could find an inflatable bath tub which fits inside the existing bath tub then there would be no issue if the door was opened.

I'm not sure if that poster is on the wind up or just a bit hard of thinking. The follow up showed poor comprehension too.

Sorry if I misunderstood your post. And I did apologise so no need to be rude about me being stupid

I apologise if I was prickly. It was when your follow said about the door just popping open, when I'd said my son opened it that I assumed you were on the wind-up.

Is it tall enough that you can't easily climb into if you glue it shut?

To be honest, I'd probably just replace it with a regular bath. If money is tight because you've just moved, keep an eye out on Facebook marketplace - I'd have sold my old bath if I could. Unfortunately I have no idea how they got it in the bathroom because it didn't fit out the door when we replaced it and it had to be cut up!

BerryTwister · 26/01/2026 14:51

What is the lock like? Is there any way of child-proofing it?

FatFoxie · 26/01/2026 14:54

A new bath panel / piece of plywood affixed to the wall at both ends, and covering the door would stop anyone from opening it.

Who put 50p in you? Bore off, she’s clearly looking for practical advice not a lecture from someone so far up their own backside they can tickle their own tonsils.

OP you’ve nothing to feel bad about, kids are curious and they hadn’t even been told not to open the door at this point. As for supervising them I often wonder if some people think supervision equates to constant restraint. Because plenty of kids shove Lego up their nose or give their sibling a smack or bump their head on furniture even if you’re right there with them. To be honest I could see my peri menopausal brain going to open the door of the bath myself despite knowing what would happen. I made a smoothie yesterday and removed the glass cup from the bladed base despite knowing this is a model where you have to remove the lid and having used it at least 10 times before. Big clean up! I’m glad OP isn’t my Mum I think I would have been beaten and sent to my room without supper. Things like this are easily done. I think she thinks you went off for a G&T while the kids entertained themselves in the bath with an AK47 and some cyanide.
