How can I stop our new house flooding?!

We moved last week and bought the previous owners had some disabilities. There is a bath with a door that opens so you can step in. The first bath my DSs took and as I put DS2 in, DS4 opened the door to walk in and flooded the bathroom! Water was coming through the light in the kitchen below 😩.

Although it's watertight there doesn't seem to be a way you can prevent it from being opened. Obviously we'll now watch DSs like hawks but is there anything else we can do? Eventually we'll get a new bath but it's not in the budget just yet.

Presumably you get in the bath and then run it , rather than run and then open the door ?

Monvelo · 26/01/2026 12:38

Does the door open in or out? Put something in front of it like a cheap bath side?

Twasasurprise · 26/01/2026 12:41

Would a rubber bath mat hung across over the join work as a visual aid? One with suckers so it sticks to the inside and outside of the bath.

OperationalSupport · 26/01/2026 12:41

Could you use stick on cupboard locks (the type for childproofing kitchen cabinets) and permanently close the bath door?
It’ll be a little ugly but not as bad as a flooded kitchen.

That's not really the point. The point is its very easily opened as DS4 managed to do in a split second! Whenever the bath was run wouldn't have made a difference.

Tape it shut? Gaffer tape. Not pretty but might work. Presumably your 4 year old now knows to never do that again and the boys will gave an adult with them all the time so hopefully it shouldn’t happen.

Out. I worry that even if it opens a fraction the water would just flood out (it didn't fully open last time as i slammed it shut almost straight away).

OK sorry wasn't quite clear from original post
If it's just popping open without being manually opened then you'll have to use gaffer tape or similar as PP suggested

Just have showers for now?

Possibly. Would they stop it opening even a fraction though? Cupboard locks I've used usually open a little bit.

He does, he got such a fright as we shouted out but I'm still worried as it really was a fraction of a second while I lifted his brother in.

Don't these sort of doors usually open inwards so the water pressure keeps it closed? - sorry, just seen your one opens outward, does it definitely not have a secondary lock type thing, maybe take a pic and reverse image search to see if there's a trick to locking it that's not immediately obvious?

I'd hope he had such a shock he'll never touch it again?

Probably best never to use the door thing at all, even if getting in the bath for a shower etc. So it's not a 'thing' iyswim.

The shower is over the bath and the boys won't shower anyway-it scares them.

I've never understood these baths, there seem to be so many downsides, and sadly you have found another one 🤦‍♀️ I hope you get everything dried out ok, it will take a while sadly but you'll get there and will hopefully be able to laugh about it in years to come.

The idea of fixing something to the outside of the bath to block the door sounds good - a panel perhaps? If a new bath will be possible in the not so distant future then I'd also be tempted to get a roll of gorilla tape and just go for it. Ugly yes, but nothing will shift that!

StrongTea · 26/01/2026 12:52

Was going to suggest silicon sealant but not sure if that would work, suppose would be like glueing it closed.

No, that's what I'd assumed too! We haven't used the door at all but I think he was just curious.

Oh gosh sorry but this made me laugh 😂It's like something from a slapstick comedy 😆

Super glue? Or some of that extra strong no nails mastic stuff

95PercentCheese · 26/01/2026 12:59

No kid will beat this stuff! The door will never open again mind, but that doesn't sound like a bad thing...

Parenting?!!! Tell them they are absolutely NOT to open the door in the bath that mum or dad only do that and when the child is having a bath unless they are a teenager so should have the door shut then YOU or your dh should be already in the bathroom supervising due to safety!

I'm not sure if that poster is on the wind up or just a bit hard of thinking. The follow up showed poor comprehension too.

Thanks for that. My children are well behaved with good manners, unlike you.

Obviously they will be parented and I very much doubt it will ever happen again but surely common sense would be to also take extra precautions. If you'd read my posts you'd see that I was in the room. The bath is wider at the left hand side nearest the taps and I was lifting my youngest into that part. The door is at the other end and my elder son (who was stood waiting for me to lift him in) must have thought he'd "help" so opened the door to step in). I made a mistake by assuming the door couldn't be opened when the bath is full but I'm not a bad parent and my children aren't left unsupervised in the bath.

You think kids need supervising in the bath until they are a teenager?!!! That is weird!
