Originally Dd was going on holiday with my ex and her 2 younger brothers. Hes not her dad but they used to be close, they sre not anymore and he removed her from the holiday. So me and her are going to spend some time together and do some things . Originally I booked a forest holiday afor us. As I thiught it would be something different. But then realised she probably wouldn't want to do the activities. Plus my budget for a holiday in August isn't great. So instead I thought we could do day outs/treats.

My budget is upto 850 at the very most. I have booked us in to see wicked at the theater.

I don't drive so I need to use public transport. I live in London.

This is what she won't like museums, spars, pamper type things. Heritage gardens/national trust. Theme parks..

It feels a bit hard because it doesnt leave much else. But hoping there may be something I haven't thought of.

City break. Often hotels are not expensive in city centres in August. You could do Paris, Berlin somewhere like that?

C152 · 26/01/2026 11:43

Does she like physical activities? You could do a stand up paddleboarding class on the Thames (there are usually special introductory offers), or hire your own motor boat; in summer there are rollerskating classes in Hyde Park; you could visit ArtPlay in town and do one of their classes together; or get the train to a different city, like Edinborough, and explore?

C152 · 26/01/2026 11:46

Or, if she's really into flying, look into the price of a trial flight lesson at Biggin Hill (it will eat into your budget, but it will definitely be something to remember!).

NewtonsCradle · 26/01/2026 12:20

You could book a cheap hotel somewhere like Glasgow and commute into Edinburgh for the fringe (Edinburgh hotels are silly expensive in August which is why I suggest Glasgow). Tickets are pretty affordable and she could choose from comedy, plays etc so it's not all on you to decide what to do.

Duxford is going to hit the spot if she likes planes. Boy do they have planes.
You can get a bus there from Cambridge or Royston railway stations.

Agree re Duxford - it’s about four times the size of the Hendon Museum. Also, don’t know if they let under 18s do them, but they offer flights in historic planes. I bought my husband one for a birthday one year - think he went up in a Tiger Moth or something like that? And old two seater open plane, anyway. That would be blowing most of your budget on one short experience, but it would be the experience of a lifetime.

Eurostar to Paris and stay overnight?

LostTooManyScrews · 27/01/2026 16:14

I decided to take her to Blackpool. There's going to be 2 airplane displays. We are going to stay for 3 nights. And we can do a few bits there to. Plus we are booked to see wicked in London.

Her face lite up when I told her so shes really happy.

Always remember many smaller airfields offer flying experiences, so she can learn the controls etc.....Don't do it through red letter days or similar, as they add quite a chunk on. Just phone the airfield direct. Maybe for a future birthday?
You sound like you will both have a great time in Blackpool.

Arran2024 · 27/01/2026 22:02

Day Trip to Kingston. There are decent shops and you can have lunch by the river. There is a big indoor fun centre with all sorts of games like axe throwing, bowling, curling. Easy to get to from Waterloo.

Pinkissmart · 27/01/2026 22:12

Camping? Maybe combine with learning to surf or paddle board? Wouldn’t paddleboard on the sea though- lakes are better.

You could do a few extreme day trips.

Foot passenger on a ferry somewhere and a night or 2 in an Air B&B

That’s lovely - well done 👏

There’s a spitfire museum in Blackpool as well just in case you hadn’t seen it! The air show is great but does get busy. Ideally get there fairly early if you want a good view and if you can, take a couple of camping chairs

Could you make it to Manchester and to the Aviation Viewing Park? They have a few old planes there and sometimes you can go on them. There’s also Concorde in a special hangar which you can also go on - you have to pay for that but she might be enjoy that too?

Ah, I’m glad you came up with something she can look forward to.

was going to suggest the London Eye. But that might seem tame after Blackpool

Oh that sounds good. Probably not though to be honest we are goinng to blackpool for long weekend to see the air show. I dont drive so it woukd be difficult and feel rushed. Something to think about for another time though I thonk she would love it.

Anywhere along the front but if you station yourself on the comedy carpet or nearby you’ll be right in the middle of it. The comedy carpet is directly in front of the tower

If you're off to blackpool you can stay in a converted airplane or helicopter

Someone else suggested this. Dd would love it but I don't drive so it makes it really difficult

Could you manage an extreme day trip or one night break if you have passports?

If you book in advance you can get the flights for about £50 pp or sometimes less. If you go somewhere like Spain, Portugal or Poland eating out is relatively cheap, especially Poland. Gdansk is near the coast, with a cheap train to the city and Sopot on the coast, beautiful and will be warm in August.

I have taken my daughter to Blackpool a few times. Taxis are plentiful and cheap but tbh I would stay in a decent hotel by the sea front so you can walk most places. We took a taxi out to the zoo one day, also down to the pleasure beach. The ice dance show is really good BTW.
