Inspired by the opposite thread, which places you have visited have stayed in your mind and you would recommend to others?

My favourite was the drive from Miami down to Key West - an absolutely fascinating, lovely trip. The sheer scale of some of the bridge building and lovely little stops at some of the Keys on the way was all so memorable. The scenery was all beautiful too, and Key West itself was gorgeous. Thoroughly recommended.

A hot afternoon in Venice, aching feet from sightseeing so we got on a vaporetto and stayed on to do the full loop of the Grand Canal.
Just lovely to relax and watch life going by on the water.

Driving a camper van to Milford Sound in NZ South Island. It was awe inspiring. You drive through a very long tunnel then down a switchback, there was snow all around - the week before we got sunburned in the north island.

in fact NZ was incredible, lupins grow everywhere, they are like weeds but such beautiful colours. The most unbelievable holiday ever.

Nothing so romantic for me but the 1st time we went to Scotland over 40 years ago we got lost in the dark and parked up on a camp site. Slept in the car and the woke up as daylight was breaking over the mountains and a loch. Have never forgotten that sight.

Alltheburpees · 25/01/2026 18:31

Svalbard. Such dramatic scenery, the sight and sound of glaciers and ice fields, and seeing polar bears. I’ll never forget the excitement.

I went to Sardinia with my twin when we were in our early 20's.
We were in a beautiful hotel where we halved the average age of the clientele.

One of the waiters invited us out with him and his friends. We went to the beach where they had caught fish which were left in a basket in the sea. They then cooked this up on a stove that they'd brought to the beach with some pasta. It was a magical evening.

My sister has been back since, I haven't but would love to revisit it.

Very few places are not memorable to me. But some favourites:

-Sicily. Palermo, Agrigento, Catania, Syracuse then back to Palermo over 2 weeks
-Day trip from Madrid to Toledo. The cathedral was amazing
-Day trip from Malaga to Ronda to see the famous bridge
-Helicopter flight, just DH and myself (and pilot) over Kakadu, Northern Territory in Aus. With no doors on the helicopter so we could see the views!
-DH and I scuba dive and ski and nearly every places we've done those activities have been memorable and magical.

Holy Island (Lindisfarne) - we went in May so it wasn't too busy and the peace of the place was amazing, I just felt so unstressed there.

We only went for the day but would love to go back for longer.

Venice here too - walking onto st marks square just as a street band started playing whiter shade of pale.
New York - cycling round Central Park on a sunny autumn day.
Readymoney Cove cliff walk in Fowey.

GRCP · 25/01/2026 18:42

Also climbing Edinburgh Tor

Rome. My degree was Roman archaeology, but I didn't get to go until years later. To see in person the places I had been writing and reading about for so long was beautiful.

taxguru · 25/01/2026 18:48

Venice, randomly walking down narrow alleyways and finding yourself in a lovely square with a beautiful church, then doing the same again down the next random alley!

Petra (Jordan), the breathtaking sight as you walk down the siq and get the first glimpse of the famous treasury building.

Niagra falls, the sound and feel of the power of the water as you sail under it on the Maiden of the Mist boats.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 25/01/2026 18:49

Great thread!

Venice for me, like others. Been there a few times but was there for Christmas once. Boyfriend had flu but sent me out on Christmas day to enjoy myself. Sunny, blue sky and Venice doesn't close over Christmas. Vaporetti were running, plenty of cafes and restaurants were open, and I went over the (Accademia?) bridge and saw this woman and her dog. Unforgettable.

(Iceland's good too...)

I'm desperate to go to Svalbard. Have been to the northern tip of Finland, but still need to go further north. It sounds wonderful.

sharkstale · 25/01/2026 19:28

Glad to see so many people highlight Venice, as it's my favourite place I've visited, and I've been abroad a fair bit. Always been quite surprised that it remains my favourite.

Also, having Moroccan tagine for lunch halfway up a mountain right next to Ouzoud waterfall, followed by a boat trip under the waterfall in hand made boats made from barrels.

Winederlust · 25/01/2026 19:32

South Africa. The garden route, the winelands, safari, boulders beach, cape point. Just all amazing.
Every time I've been to Italy.

KittyMcKitty · 25/01/2026 19:36

Iceland in February really magical

Barbados - really lovely family holiday

Staying in the Drakensberg mountains in S Africa in semi wilderness and then driving up the Sani Pass and down through Lesotho.

Many family holidays on the Pembrokeshire coast when the kids were small - the most amazing beaches!

Cheepcheepcheep · 25/01/2026 19:37

Either Yosemite or island hopping around Phuket. Very different but both a ‘wow’ moment about how incredible nature is.

Also going to the top of the Empire State Building, but more of a man-made ‘wow’ and how iconic it felt to be there. Plus it was nearly midnight and I’d had a few cocktails 😄

DemonsandMosquitoes · 25/01/2026 20:00

Iceland In the winter, just everything about it.
The Maldives, seeing them from the air. The colour of the ocean. The sealife..oh my.
Seville, sat in the park in t shirts one New Years Day drinking wine. Just a wonderful city.
Randomly, El Djem in Tunisia. Almost empty, we climbed all over it from the underground to the very top in blazing sun. Much much preferred to the Colosseum in Rome.

bellocchild · 25/01/2026 20:40

Driving over the Millau Viaduct on our way to Spain, with the Stones blasting away on the CD player, and a large bevy of bikers roaring away beside us!

dragonsandfairies · 25/01/2026 21:52

2 weeks in a motorhome with my husband and dog driving around the north of Scotland.
The entire trip was just amazing. The beaches are just pure white sand with clear sea. The most relaxed I've ever felt and im desperate to go back. I literally did not want to leave.
The people who live up there are so lucky.
