The story of the lyrics say what?!

I was today years old when I realised Upside Down by Diana Ross is her singing about a man who's cheating on her.

And the bottom line is that because she likes the way he makes her feel, there'll always be a place in her heart for him.

I'd never actually heard that in the song before! Shocked in the shower!

I informed my friend yesterday that Watermelon Sugar is about cunnilingus.

Pina Colada - was always a favourite with the boyfriend and I, until i looked up the lyrics during a long car journey 😳 The song's story is that I'm bored with my partner, so I look for a new one in the personal ads. I meet them, and it turns out it was my partner who placed the ad. Essentially, they're both looking to cheat on each other. Very unexpected story for such a breezy song!

We all know Every Breath you take is actually a stalker song.

Any other stories in songs that are really not what you expected?

And Neil Diamond wrote Red Red Wine by UB40. His original version is practically forgotten

He did, yes!! I had forgotten about that. UB40s first Labour of Love album is one of my all time favourites.
I have it on vinyl, cassette and CD formats 🥰

It seems to pass a lot of people by that House Of Fun by Madness was about a 16yo who was about to lose his virginity.

People hear Rod Stewart's Tonight's The Night and often assume that it's about a young couple who are both of a similar age and both equally consenting to a night of mutual passion, but it's actually about an older predatory man trying to coerce a much younger woman/girl who seems to be resisting his 'charms' by emotionally blackmailing her. It's a romantic-sounding song, but it's actually horrible.

It was used in a very innocent young kids' film about a decade ago, about a cat who lived with a magician in some enchanted house that all the magical sentient toys as well as pets had to save from a real estate agent.

Really made me laugh but also- did the Americans who made the film just think it was a nice song about a fun house?!

That’s hilarious 🤣
I so wish there was a ‘laughing reaction’ button on Mumsnet

Pull up to the Bumper by Grace Jones is about doing it doggy style. Learned that about four years ago.

La Jones says people say it's about anal sex.
In her memoir she takes the piss about it royally; she sort of denies it, then shrugs and basically says, 'Think what you want.'

oh I didn’t know until adulthood 😂😂😂

“I’m not worried about ‘bout the ring you wear cause as long as no one knows then nobody can care…you’re feeling guilty and I’m well aware, but you don’t look ashamed and baby I’m not scared”

really cryptic 🤣

I still listen to it, such a good song 😁

Why, what do you think it’s about? It’s about a man and woman cheating isn’t it? I don’t get it, am I missing something?

Uncle Kracker has never said that….. that’s just other ppls speculation! He said you can’t interpret whatever you like from it. I get the drug references with swim through veins but that was never my own interpretation. Otherwise the rest of the lyrics make no sense - drugs would not be married etc.

I don’t get that from the lyrics at all…it seems very obvious it’s about cheating!

When he says and “I swim through your veins like a fish in the sea” I’m pretty sure he’s speaking metaphorically about lust/love - not drugs.

He literally says she’s wearing a ring!

Ooo I think the opening lines make it clear it’s about heroin!!!

Ohhh, so when you initially quoted me, you thought I didn’t know it could be about a woman?? 😅

I was wondering why you thought it was obvious to a kid 😂😂

I definitely think it sounds like a drug song

reminds me of Chris Dolmeth by Hopsin

What, “you don’t know how you met me, you don’t know why”? What about that suggests intravenous drugs? 😂

Someone I was having an affair with actually sent me that song - it was “our song” 😬

’someone I was having an affair with’ 👀👀 what happened to them

Honestly, no 😂😂, hence my username

but I can imagine I suppose, and hope to experience it in future 🤷‍♀️

but for me, the pacing of the song, the sound, is very much what I imagine the life of an addict to feel like - very much strung out, romantic but simple, I kind of picture religious angel babies with needles singing to a skinny girl

🙈🙈 overthinking this

Ugh, I wonder if they were really that lacking in their basic research, or whether they maybe had a 'wrong 'un' on their team.

It's a bit like on Bargain Hunt, where they find a line, or even just two words from a song that seem in isolation to go with one of the presenters' comments about the property in question. It's laughably bonkers a lot of the time; although they don't usually pick 'questionable' songs - and even if they did, at least the main target audience for BH is very much adults.

Lots of terrible lyrics from the 70s. It's my era of study. Three Degrees and Susan Cadogan sang some dreadful songs.

And the 80s. The ever-so "right on" Beat had a song called "Hands Off She's Mine"!

Yeah! It doesn’t resonate with me as a drug song at all! I know people like to look for “extra meaning” but I don’t really buy into all that 😂

Are you very young OP?

Literally everyone knows that about Golden Brown.

A lot of these are fairly obvious surely?

One I find particularly creepy is Police’s Don’t Stand So Close to Me. Especially as Sting actually was a teacher 🤢

You sound very patronising on this thread.

I’ve felt that so maybe that’s why it strongly resonates in that direction for me 😊
