Can you actually see them with your own eyes though?? I actually got out of bed when the last northern lights frenzy kicked off, left my front door and there was a slightly less-black swirl in the sky… went for a walk, hoping to actually see something… was raging when I watched someone take a picture on their phone of the black sky, and it came out all colourful. Bloody swizz!! My parents literally went to the top of Norway and saw barely anything yet everyone had great photos…

Definitely tonight. I know what you mean but this time easily visible to the eye. Dancing lights and everything. Stunning. That is a bucket list item ticked off.

WitsEnd129 · 19/01/2026 23:03

Another one from Shropshire

Wowzel · 19/01/2026 23:04

It's too cloudy here in Berkshire.

QueenOfThorns · 19/01/2026 23:05

Cloudy as usual in Manchester Sad

Morepositivemum · 19/01/2026 23:05

In Ireland and they just look like haze but when we took a picture the geeen came through! Fantastic!

wonderstuff · 19/01/2026 23:05

How lovely! Cloudy in north Hampshire.

Myfridgeiscool · 19/01/2026 23:06

Oh that’s beautiful!
Nothing here in dank, dark Essex.
We saw them about 18 months ago, loved it, managed to not sleep through them!

OnTheBoardwalk · 19/01/2026 23:09

I paid a fortune to go to Norway to see them. 12 hours after I arrived I was told they were there for 48 hours just before I arrived

still cloudy in the north wast

Seawolves · 19/01/2026 23:12

Shropshire!

What time was this? I am near that area, and the sky is quite clear, and I am seeing nothing. I did see them last year though, twice, so am OK with not seeing them tonight, but I don't see them now.

It was 22:17! Couldn’t see much with the naked eye though. My iPhone did a good job of capturing the colours.

DustyMaiden · 19/01/2026 23:17

Also Cornwall

Northern Lights!
MeouwKing · 19/01/2026 23:21

I thought I had seen them, but it turns out my local football club puts their floodlights on to help the grass grow and in mist this creates a Northern Lights like-effect.

Ah ha, that'll be it. I could see strips of what appeared to be cloud(s) across the sky looking north/north east, but not really any colour tbh. I pointed my camera towards the 'clouds' and snapped away on different settings and have got some bits of colour, but I could see very little with the naked eye. Well, very little colour anyway. I guess that must have been the northern lights... Or what is left of them anyway. Smile

.

justtheotheronemrswembley · 19/01/2026 23:50

Oh poo - we have full cloud cover here, but we did see them once before.

JustAnotherWhinger · 20/01/2026 00:14

I'm gutted. I'm away for a hospital appointment with one of the DC. It's wet and cloudy here, photos from home are absolutely stunning 😭

justtheotheronemrswembley · 20/01/2026 00:47

Maybe this explains why my 3 cats have been acting strangely all evening. Wanting to go out, in, out, in again, annoying each other and generally being a nuisance. Perhaps they could sense it.

Strange, mine too! Wouldn't settle at all!

Ijwwm · 20/01/2026 01:53

For those disappointed that you don’t see anything with the naked eye - don’t be! If there is a chance of aurora in your area, always snap away with your camera.

I cannot remember, or understand, the explanations around it. Something about how our eyes process light and colour at the same time can make it harder to see them. Whereas the camera can filter out the battle between light and colour.

My mum did a trip to see the NL a few years ago. She said that what they could see with the naked eye was more like white swirls in the sky, but the guy do8ng the photography showed them what the camera picks up.

I “saw” them in east anglia May 2024, was definitely a bucket list tick for me. This thread has reminded me that I need to download the alert app, gutted I’ve missed this tonight. Beautiful photos from those that saw it, lucky buggers!

Was too cloudy here last night but I saw a good show a few months ago

I do understand that but it’s a bit shit isn’t it? You’re not seeing them if you have to take a photo. May as well stay in bed and google photos of them 😆 come on Mother Nature, do better!

DeanElderberry · 20/01/2026 07:22

I forgot to put the bin out until I had already changed into my PJs and went out very reluctantly and grumpily, then saw the band of green light along the northern skyline. Turned, and the whole sky to the west was glowing red.

Amazing unexpected gift from the universe..

QueenOfThorns · 20/01/2026 07:22

What alert are people using? I’d love to see them, but always seem to find out after the event!
