Hi guys,

Not sure if this is the right place to post but im just feeling a bit paranoid about the above.

When picking up my 20 month old from nursery today they asked if we've ever had his eyes/vision tested as he's quite off balance sometimes and has a few injuries from home. I didn't think it was that much at this age to do an accident form every couple of weeks :/ they're always getting into mischief.

Now I was the one that said this morning if I should fill out an accident form as he banged his head on the plastic radiator dial while running away from his dad who chased him pretending to be a dinosaur 🫣 as a result he has a small, almost healed scab on his head. They said yes eventually after umming and ahing. (It's almost healed as he was off for a week due to having bronchiolitis, after his doctors visit) today was his first day back.

I've never had any concerns about his walking or balance as hes only been walking since 14 months and he's like an absolute whirlwind, wanting to do everything his 4 year old brother tries, dive bombing off the sofa, wrestling, playing chase, hide and seek, etc...

As a side note, he is epileptic and on regular keppra twice a day, but his hearing test was normal at birth and I have no concerns about his eye sight 😓 his ears were also checked at his docs appointment last week and his ears were clear.

Just wanted some reassurance I suppose, just feeling a bit down that im not watching him closely enough :(

A referral to who and for what?

A referral to who and for what?

I'm not sure, social services as I've had to fill out a few accident forms when dropping him off :(

I think it’s worth talking to your GP since he has epilepsy.
Don’t worry too much about a potential SS referral.

I worked with young children for many years and there’s nothing in what you have described that would ring any alarm bells.

Why did you offer to fill in an accident form for an incident that took place a week ago at home?

Because the nursery has a pre existing injury form for parents to fill out if theres a visible mark so I just asked if I had to, then they told me yes 😳 so I did...

I'm pretty confident he can hear me fine as soon as I open a chocolate bar in the kitchen he rushes straight in from the living room. But I suppose its better to be on the safe side

Sounds like it might be glue ear, ask Gp for a referral to ENT & they can check. That often shows as balance issues.

pimplebum · 19/01/2026 18:41

We had no idea my daughters eyesight was really bad I was embarrassed when optician told me how bad it was

always worth getting it checked and if a SS referral has been made a social worker eill ring you and want to know you are keeping up with any issues for example doctors appointments and opticians as that is evidence you are not neglectful (I am not for one second suggesting you are , but the evidence will help them to back off a bit quicker )

Marcipix · 19/01/2026 18:51

Just book him an eye test and hearing test.

Thank you, his doctor last week said his ears were clear but I don't know if that takes into account glue ear or anything. He has 6 monthly check ups with his doctor at the hospital which he is due very soon so maybe I can get them to check vision and hearing there alongside his usual development checks.

thank you for taking the time to respond. X

It's normal.

OP, if he is more off-balance and has more bumps than the average child his age then it's worth getting his eyes checked.

Burntt · 19/01/2026 19:14

Do not stress. Half of that paperwork is to protect the nursery against accusations from you the injury happened with them

Shemadewaffles · 19/01/2026 19:17

I would say maybe 3 in the last 5 weeks if I'm remembering correctly.

1 was the bump mentioned above.
1 was a small bruise on his leg I don't even know how it got there to be honest
1 was playing under his brothers new mid sleeper bed and he bumped his head standing up 😳

Have you had any A&E visits for accidents?

They do a hearing test (beep noises) and a pressure test in the ear - Gp surgeries aren’t set up for that, my Gp checked my toddlers ears but accepted that it would be ENT that would be able to assess/diagnose glue, I didn’t think my toddlers hearing was bad but his balance was off (very clumsy) and speech a little behind his peers.

No, 1 visit to A and E for bad chicken pox but that's it

Right ok, I'll have a chat with his doctor about getting a referral, thank you!!!

Children who arrive at nursery with bruises or healing cuts to the head, or bruises to the torso, upper thighs, and arms might or might not be just bumping into things.

Shemadewaffles · 19/01/2026 19:44

I find it very strange that you have no idea who they are referring to!

They're not referring to anyone.
OP is just worried that the number of injuries her child's had might be a red flag and the nursery will make a safeguarding referral.
However, it doesn't sound like that's the case.
