Paranoid nursery are going to make a referral :(

Hi guys,

Not sure if this is the right place to post but im just feeling a bit paranoid about the above.

When picking up my 20 month old from nursery today they asked if we've ever had his eyes/vision tested as he's quite off balance sometimes and has a few injuries from home. I didn't think it was that much at this age to do an accident form every couple of weeks :/ they're always getting into mischief.

Now I was the one that said this morning if I should fill out an accident form as he banged his head on the plastic radiator dial while running away from his dad who chased him pretending to be a dinosaur 🫣 as a result he has a small, almost healed scab on his head. They said yes eventually after umming and ahing. (It's almost healed as he was off for a week due to having bronchiolitis, after his doctors visit) today was his first day back.

I've never had any concerns about his walking or balance as hes only been walking since 14 months and he's like an absolute whirlwind, wanting to do everything his 4 year old brother tries, dive bombing off the sofa, wrestling, playing chase, hide and seek, etc...

As a side note, he is epileptic and on regular keppra twice a day, but his hearing test was normal at birth and I have no concerns about his eye sight 😓 his ears were also checked at his docs appointment last week and his ears were clear.

Just wanted some reassurance I suppose, just feeling a bit down that im not watching him closely enough :(

Do not stress. Half of that paperwork is to protect the nursery against accusations from you the injury happened with them

I was going to say this. They want to know about bruises the children come in with so they know it hasn't happened on their watch.

That makes sense, it just makes me feel like a crap mum but I should be grateful the nursery are being so cautious. My first boy was just so calm, whereas my second who I'm talking about is like a whirlwind and can't sit still for more than 3 seconds before bolting off and trying to stick his hand down the toilet or something 😳💀a

thank you for reassuring me anyway, I just worry a lot

Nurseries are experienced at looking after children. If they are suggesting an eye test may be needed I would be getting one. Call an optician, they may be able to do the assessment or will advise you to speak to your GP.
We didn't realise our child had a problem with their vision until we noticed their eyes weren't moving together. Diagnosed with lazy eye. They were a bit clumsy before this and couldn't name simple things. While waiting for the hospital appointment fell and cut their face, needed stitches.
After being given glasses he started to ask what things were eg. Squirrels, birds - he had seen them before but obviously couldn't see them clearly.
No harm in getting your child's eyes tested. When they are little the optician will use pictures rather than letters.

They are doing their job, they have to note any injuries and reason parents say they happen, so much better to tell them straight away if they have any.
Yes if it’s an on going issue they will have to, but get their eyes checked as there could be an issue that is causing the bumping into things. They are use to children do know what is normal.

In all honesty I think you're telling nursery too much. You know the head bump was old, healing and from play so it's not their concern. If it was a new bump that morning you obviously mention it so they keep an eye. Other than that they can ask you if they're concerned.

We've got an appointment for his eyes on the 10th February and have just had a letter through for his ear referral.

So we're all on track. I got a hold of myself and thought well theyre looking out for him and if there is something affecting his balance at least we'll find it xx

Yes i think so too. He face planted our kitchen floor on Tuesday so had a small forehead bruise when he attended on Friday, but i didnt mention it as it was already healing and he wasn't bothered /it was old.

We're still getting his eyes and ears tested as he seems a lot clumsier than his brother was. Although I think hes just trying to keep up and going faster than his little legs can carry him at the moment.

My DD was (and to some degree, still is) like this. She was referred by the GP for an eye test (has to be done at the hospital eye clinic this young) and her eyesight was found to be +6.5!

My husband was very clumsy as a kid and his parents put it down to being a typical boy. Turns out he has astigmatism in one eye so his peripheral sight is rubbish. He wears one contact lens and he's perfectly fine. It might be something as simple as this!
