Going to Rome, other than screaming in the Sistine Chapel, what non-touristy things should I do?

As the title says. Will be doing all the touristy things but does anyone have any recommendations of different things - places to eat etc.
Thanks

Hahaha! Brilliant! Have nothing to add but glad you have your priorities right. Hope the screaming is lengthy and full throttle!

Makemineacosmo · 17/01/2026 15:05

Best recommendation for us was to find places to eat that are not overlooking landmarks like the Colosseum etc. The difference in cost for a meal is staggering if you pop down one of the side roads instead.

Makemineacosmo · 17/01/2026 15:06

Oh and believe it or not, the best pizza I ever had in my life was at the cafe in the Vatican. It was definitely worth screaming for.

PandaOrLion · 17/01/2026 15:09

If you can get out of Rome go to Ostia antica. I wouldn’t got back to the forum etc but loved Ostia antica and could have spent another few hours there. We visited in June and were the only people there.

Rome children’s museum is brilliant if you’ve for kids with you.

Went a few months ago and did the walking food tour in travestere. It was expensive. We never usually do organised tours but both really enjoyed it. All the food and drinks were great.

explanationplease · 17/01/2026 15:10

Good luck doing that! Especially with 5 million other tourists present.

Clefable · 17/01/2026 15:11

Great now I have to spend the next hour rereading that thread Grin

Eat at Pizza In Trevi, just next to the fountain. You’d think it would be a tourist trap, but it really isn’t.

Go and see the Caravaggios that are just hanging in churches. Google will tell you which churches, they’re amazing.

Eat deep fried artichokes in the Jewish Quarter.

Go to see lovely Alan at Vincellii Silk and buy some silk scarves.

Keats House is a must. Have a little sit on the tiny terrace. Very special.

I love Rome. It’s probably my favourite city.

Have a walk around the Monti neighbourhood, which is close to the Colosseum but has a much more laid back, less busy vibe. Great spots to eat which aren’t as expensive as the touristy areas and pretty streets with independent shops and cafes. A lot easier to walk around than Trastavere, which is great area but does get very very crowded.

If you like being overwhelmed by Baroque and art, go to the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj. The gallery within is amazing, the architecture is way over the top!

Also would recommend the National Gallery of Modern & Contemporary Art. Not too busy, because people are elsewhere!

Finally you can't miss the Borghese Gallery. It takes a bit of finding in the park but is excellent. Also the Gardens are amazing.

Of gourse there are ruins. The best (imo) is Trajan's Market, the world's first shopping mall. All the tour groups go to the Colesseum et all, but there's plenty of other ruins to admire.

If you are a bit religious (or even not, because I found it very freaky) take the Metro and see the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. It's full of popes and the odd Bernini item. Pope John Paul the Second was interred there but I think since was sainted he's moved to St Paul's.

Ice cream tip: only visit places with flat ice cream. If its overflowing in the tub, they've whipped it up to make it go further.

Oh & the Botanical Gardens in Trastevere is a must. Gorgeous place. The butterfly house is extea but when we went it was only €5. It belongs to the University of Rome.

Ijustpopped · 17/01/2026 15:32

The Leonardo da Vinci museum is great

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/01/2026 15:50

I remember that thread! Scream loudly!

Latenightreader · 17/01/2026 15:51

Seconding Ostia Antica. It is an easy train ride from Rome (c20 mins?) and is incredible - I remember climbing stairs to the upstairs of Roman flats!

Trajan's Market was also an unexpected delight, as were the baths that are slightly further out past the circus.

My favourite things were the stationery shops with the gorgeous paper things and the hostels for visiting priests with Nuns guarding the doorways.

slipperypenguin · 17/01/2026 16:06

We had great fun hiring a pedal car / bike thing in villa borghese

I had the worst pizza of my life there! Thick and doughy!

If you like cinema you can take a tour of Cinecitta, the film studios responsible for many Italian movie classics, with amazing film sets.
It's on one of the main metro lines, and of course has a good cafe with excellent food.

Went recently to this place for an amazing dinner: https://www.argallettoroma.com

Had a nice lunch here (near the colosseum):

Touristy, but I really enjoyed visiting the church of San Clemente — a church built on a church built on a Roman temple, all of which you can visit.

You will need to book in advance for the Borghese Gallery, but it's well worth it.

I love all the gorgeous stationery shops near the Pantheon.

Explore the Jewish Quarter.

It is quite touristy, but to the lift to the top of the Vittorio Emmanuele monument as the views are great from up there.

Caffe Greco in Via Condotti (expensive, but fabulous).

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/01/2026 19:38

Thanks all. And yes it will be a mighty scream worthy of you all 🤣
Some great ideas and tips thanks
