How far do people commute to work?

Sometimessometimesnot · 15/01/2026 23:49

I am considering driving to a lovely care home an hour away.
Working a 12 hour night shift once a week as a registered nurse .
Would people consider this ?
Am only interested in replies from people who work these hours with a drive to and from that takes an hour.

I take a drive/train/walk 3 days a week which takes 1.5hours each way, so yes for 1 day a week I would do this.

DizziLizzy · 15/01/2026 23:55

This is going to come down to £££ earnings

SouthBeachDreams · 16/01/2026 00:00

I have a 1 hour and 20 mins drive twice a week (100 miles round trip). So I’d say once a week would be doable as long as you’re not too tired after a long night shift.

ThatFridayfeelingishereagain · 16/01/2026 06:01

That sounds fine, once a week isn't too bad.

rainandshine38 · 16/01/2026 06:04

I drive 56 miles each way 3 days a week. It takes 43 mins. I wouldn’t do it for a care home job though because there are lots of care homes so there’s bound to be another job coming up that’s closer.

fouroclockrock · 16/01/2026 06:07

It’s only once a week? I have to do slightly more than that every day but on public transport with long hours.

piscofrisco · 16/01/2026 06:12

I work an hour and 20 mins drive away 4 days a week. I love the job I do and it’s fairly niche so there isn’t anything like it nearer, or I wouldn’t do it.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 16/01/2026 06:45

My commute is one hour 20, very standard.

Statsquestion1 · 16/01/2026 06:47

15min drive 3 days a week.

NatalieH2220 · 16/01/2026 06:55

I commute to the office once a week and takes 1-1.5 hours each way. I find it fine as it’s only once a week, breaks the week up.

HalzTangz · 16/01/2026 06:56

This question will be different for everyone. I love my job but equally I value my home life too. I spend enough time at work and do not feel I want to spend anymore time than necessary for my commute. So for me 10-15 minutes drive is the most important prepared to commute. That said I know others that spend just shy of 2 hours each way for their commute to work

EleanorReally · 16/01/2026 06:58

i dont see why not,
you say it is lovely
an hour once a week is not an issue

PersephoneParlormaid · 16/01/2026 06:58

An hour commute isn’t unusual now, but driving for an hour after you’ve worked a night shift is the problem. Only you know if you can do it.

EleanorReally · 16/01/2026 07:04

i drive 50 minutes there and 50 minutes back every day

what awaits you when you come home?

EveryDayisFriday · 16/01/2026 07:06

I live near lots of major motorways and busy A roads, my old 7 mile commute to the centre of town could take me upto 45mins. At worst it was 2hrs when there was a major accident on the motorways.

For me, 30min on most days would be ok. However, this limits my distance during rush hour to within 5miles of my house, not much opportunity to earn well around here. Currently I wfh so no commute is a blessing these days, not much use for a nurse.

DH works 22miles away, this takes him around 40min as his shifts are not often in rush hour.

As PP said, depends on your routes and traffic load.

Makingadecision · 16/01/2026 07:06

Why this care home? Is there not one closer?

jamandcustard · 16/01/2026 08:08

I run my own business and my furthest client is a 15 minute drive from my house. I wouldn’t take on anyone who lives further than her.

Christmassy24 · 16/01/2026 08:11

My commute is around 35 minutes each way. I go in to the office on average twice a week and that is far enough for me.

Oblomov25 · 16/01/2026 08:14

I've never done a long commute, I just refuse to. Longest was 20 minutes, current one about 5 to the next town.

CactusSwoonedEnding · 16/01/2026 08:19

I used to do an hour-long commute 4 days a week. It was fine but was at the limit of fine, I wouldn't do more than that.

Imo about 45 minutes of commute is about right - I find it takes this kind of length of time to shift my frame of mind from "home" mode to "work" mode and back, so if my commute is only 15 minutes I don't tend to achieve much in the first 30 minutes after the transition. With a 45 minute commute I have enough time to process and finish thinking about the issues I've left behind and start considering the issues I am about to face, and arrive with the energy and enthusiasm to crack on.

The effect reverses for longer commutes though. Anything over 75 minutes is just draining.

60 minutes is close enough to the sweet spot.

wertgyhjk · 16/01/2026 08:23

1 mile, 20 minute walk. The longest commute I've done was 90 minutes (walk-bus-walk) - never again!

watchuswreckthemic · 16/01/2026 08:25

Yes I would and my commute more than once a week is well over an hour.
To people who say ‘why don’t you work in a care home closer’; there is a real difference between a lovely home and those that are not.

Nannyfannybanny · 16/01/2026 08:39

I'm retired now,we moved, did the downsizing near the sea bungalow..I was working nights on a hyper acute stroke unit. It was 12 miles from where we used to live. When I started on the ward nights shift was 9.45 hours. It graduate increased to 12.30 .. I apologise I a god a job in the locker hospital, had just given my notice, DH came in from work... his company had liquidated on the spot. I got London weighing, high cost living, night allowance. I stayed put for 4 years. I did 3 nights a week, commute was 100 mile round trip. I allowed 2 hours to get there, speed cameras, road works, parking, getting to the ward. On a good day, I got home in 90 minutes.

Nannyfannybanny · 16/01/2026 08:42

The phone has altered a lot of my words. I typed, I had an interview in the local hospital (the money was awful) I rescinded my notice and stayed.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 16/01/2026 08:45

My commute to the office is a minimum of an hour. When I say it’s a minimum it’s usually around one hour 10. Up to an hour and a half if roadworks or an accident.

I only have to do it once or twice a week. It’s manageable.

how often would you have to do it?
