Colonoscopy - bum embarrassment

Namechangedforgoodreasons · 15/01/2026 18:46

I’ve got to have a colonoscopy.

Please reassure me that the medical staff won’t be stifling giggles at the size of my enormous arse…

Please don’t worry, I’ve had multiple colonoscopies, and I want to reassure you that the medical staff will only be thinking about making sure you are comfortable and ok. Good luck!

TomatoSandwiches · 15/01/2026 18:48

You're not allowed to take your husband in with you so no worries.

TabbyBeast · 15/01/2026 18:48

Bless you but they definitely won't. Yours probably won't even be the first bum they see that day. Good luck, take the sedation and wear the modesty knickers they give you for the illusion of cover x

GaladrielHiggins · 15/01/2026 18:48

Having had a colonoscopy in the last six months I can reassure you that you will be fine. They see bums day in and day out, yours will not be the biggest they’ve seen and you are well covered up for it anyway, your bum won’t be sticking out for all to see.

Perrylobster · 15/01/2026 18:52

I've had a couple over the year and the staff are just really kind and supportive. One nurse held my hand throughout and the doctor talked me through everything. I didn't have a sedative (my choice) but it was still fine.

Inthefuturenow · 15/01/2026 18:58

Take the sedation. You won't care 😂

Vaxtable · 15/01/2026 18:58

They don’t care, they have seen all shapes and sizes. I have had three so far, no issues at all, just really nice staff talking you through it

hint about taking the prep, use really ice cold water and take a few gulps followed by a couple of sips of flavoured squash I used elderflower, you can use any red ones and sit near the toilet

Acommonreader · 15/01/2026 19:05

Not a colonoscopy nurse but I am in healthcare. I see bums and bodies of all shapes and sizes every day and simply view it as part of my job.
It’s normal , ordinary even slightly boring to us , it’s definitely not funny or titillating in any way. We are genuinely only looking at things that are relevant to the job. For example when looking at some ones body ( at work ) I might notice a mole or swelling to follow up on.
Good luck with your procedure.

Believe me, they do not notice how big or small people are, they are just concentrating on ensuring the procedure goes ok and you are fine.

Simonjt · 15/01/2026 19:22

Think about how many bums they see, one of them probably holds the record for looking at the most arses. So to them your bum is as ordinary and boring as a hand, foot or even an ear.

BoarBrush · 15/01/2026 19:22

They don't care about anything. I'm quite brazen taking my clothes off for professionals, I learnt years ago they don't give a shite.

My husband got a total proctectomy a few months ago, half the GP's in our surgery came to have a look at his no-hole bum as they hadn't seen one yet.

Mum3542 · 15/01/2026 19:26

You get given paper shorts with a slit in the back. It’s not too bad actually.

MaloryJones · 15/01/2026 19:28

I have had a fair few
They half cover your bum, OP and as PPs have said, they won't be interested
As an aside, I would ask for sedation (local) as I usually have that but the one time I did not it, it was not nice .

RanchRat · 15/01/2026 19:28

I have had many, the staff see bums all day and every day.

AgeingLabMum · 15/01/2026 19:31

I was dreading mine last year and got myself very wound up.

The staff couldn’t have been kinder. Every single one.

I will have to have one every 3 years for the rest of my life and don’t get me wrong, I won’t be looking forward to them, however the thought of it is much (much) worse than the reality.

mrsfollowill · 15/01/2026 19:38

My adult son had one very recently he said they gave him shorts with a hole in to wear. DH has had loads always has sedation and doesn't care. I suppose its like giving birth- I was worried about my legs akimbo and everything out before hand didn't care one jot on the day- there were so many docs and nurses having a good look and putting their hand up it was mad (complications ended up with EMCS.)

It's really not that bad and the staff are understanding and kind. You're not really lying there with your arse on display as they give you paper shorts and just open up the back when its time. I have a stoma so get a camera up the bum first, then through the stoma - thank god for the sedative as that's seriously weird 😆

The prep is 100% the worst bit. I'd recommend diluting the powder with half the amount of water then drinking the rest of the water after it. Sometimes it takes a while to get 'going'. Best of luck.

Callipygion · 15/01/2026 19:52

The staff were all very kind and it wasn’t as bad as I had feared.

I was given an enema kit to do at home myself before I went in before my appointment, not a drink whilst there like some previously posting. I was complimented on how well I’d done my enema 🤣

I didn’t have sedation, they just offered me gas and air and that didn’t work for me in labour so I didn’t bother with it, and also I’d driven myself so was worried they’d make me stay for ages after before letting me go home if I had it.

littleorangefox · 15/01/2026 19:58

I had one not too long ago without sedation and wasn't offered paper shorts or anything like that. The staff were all very nice though. It wasn't my favourite experience of the week and I'm quite a modest person in general when it comes to my body but even I felt that the prep was the worst part of the entire process. I would recommend following it to the letter though to avoid having to go back.

I would advise using gas and air if they offer it especially if you have a particularly long and twisty colon like me as I was informed. Probs not putting that on my CV though.

Oh also don't be surprised if they ask you to move around. I felt like I was rotating like a rotisserie chicken turning onto this side, that side, back, front...

I agree
I also fretted myself stupid over an Endoscopy .
In the end all was fine.

LarrySherbert · 15/01/2026 20:14

The only thing nobody has said yet that I would have liked to have been warned of its that, when they are removing the scope they may retroflex it to look at your rectum from the other way. The effect was quite startling, felt exactly like I urgently needed a poo and I said, "Ooh!" quite loudly, I was so surprised.
