Vinted - was i scammed...anyone else had this happen to them?

I recently sold a bundle on vinted to a buyer which had been double bagged and tapped to protect it in transit.

I received a notification from Vinted to say they put the order in hold as an issue was raised by the buyer with parcel claiming it arrived ripped open with items missing.

I was horrified as nothing like this has ever happened before. The buyer didn't message me either. Vinted got in contact with me asking for proof of packaging and I gave a photo of another package to show how I normally back and suggest to look at my feedback from buyers which quote how well the items were packed and if they could ask rhe buyer which items were missing.

Then less than 24 hours later I was told they wouldn't pay me as they believed the items were incorrectly packed and sided with the buyer who was not obligated to send the items in the package back and they would also receive a full refund under the buyer's protection scheme.

After the decision was made, I contacted the buyer and apologised. Also asking if they could confirm what was missing and they appear to have ghosted me.

I can't tell if I have been scammed and if anyone else has been in this position. I have been in two minds whether to keep selling on Vinted as they just didn't appear to care for me.

Sa you didn't get any money back. Not good, and very poor from Vinted as I think you were scammed

Strawberrymoonx · 15/01/2026 14:38

Yes I had this happened to me. The buyer ghosted me. Luckily it was only a babies sleepsuit I’d sold for £2. Vinted did give me the money back in compensation but it took a couple of months

Why would you think the buyer is lying about the packaging being damaged and items missing, and immediately assume that it’s a scam?

It’s unfortunate that you don’t have any proof of how you packaged the actual item before you sent it. Vinted can’t accept images of other parcels as evidence of how this one was packed.

GiddyDog · 15/01/2026 14:50

I've had a buyer claim to have received a totally different item than I posted. Her photos have her name on it but a different tracking number which appears evident to me it's just a different parcel that's been sent to her personally and not a labelling error by the courier.
My tracking number was collected.
Inpost lockers CCTV should easily confirm my placing the correct item in the locker but I'm having to wait a month for an 'investigation' and in the meantime I'm £50 out of pocket and this scammer has my item. So frustrating and when it's resolved (I'm more or less expecting them to side with her I lost my money) I'll be closing my account.

Migrainedays · 15/01/2026 14:59

I dont use vinted i find it over priced and reliable.

Your right they wouldn't accept the photo of the other package but I always double bag as a precaution. It was to point out to Vinted how i pack items and it has never happened before. I normally take photos of those with big packages to proof it will go in the locker.

Hardly any parcels I receive as a buyer- I get photos in advance of the parcel and I have had some sent previously in a cereal box!

I just wasn't sure if i was scammed. It wasn't much in value - more principle and the frustration that Vinted sided with the buyer with its robotic style tone of message.

The problem is the Vinted Ts and Cs state to box items when sending. They use AI bots for lots of things so your example photo not being the actual package could well count against you. Poor of the buyer not to contact you though.

Many thanks for that stunning contribution.

SilenceInside · 15/01/2026 15:30

Well, their first line of “support” is automated, so you could keep trying to escalate it with a complaint and see if you get anywhere.

I don’t think you need to send pictures of the packaging in advance to the buyer, just take them so you have them in case of dispute. It doesn’t really matter how you packaged parcels before or what previous buyers have said. Essentially you have no proof how it was packaged., unfortunately for you.

Vinted is fucking awful for both buyers and sellers. They take no responsibility for it the second it’s with the courier. I felt so sorry for the seller when I bought a lovely mooseknuckle winter coat for my little boy in November. It was £110 (£600 in the shops). It got lost by dpd in some depo. As per vinteds instructions I had to wait an entire month before claiming my money back. I’d assumed the seller would have been insured in some way with them and would also receive the money she lost, they didn’t give her a penny?! Both dpd and vinted said they held each other responsible for insurances for lost items. I also bought a top once to be delivered to a shop. I got a notification it had arrived. 6 minutes later I had a notification it had been collected? I opened a case and pointed out I’d not even been sent the collection qr code at any point, you can’t collect without that. Didn’t care, no refund

That is so annoying for you both and the time they can take to do their "investigations"!!!

Funny how they can make you feel when you have done nothing wrong!!

Did they get charged? Was it on a large scale?

Same thing happened to my daughter. She sold a pair of Nikes for £30, then the buyer claimed the package had been ripped open and she only received one trainer. Vinted accused my daughter of not packing the shoes correctly (with no proof) and she lost her money.

jdfjfj · 15/01/2026 17:06

I recently received a parcel in a plastic shipping bag (not from vinted) which had been ripped open in an area by the time it reached me, and it didn’t look accidental - it looked like someone had done it in an attempt to see what was inside. Luckily for me, they can’t be into crafting! So it could be fraud but it might not be the buyer…
