"Convenient" European minibreaks?

What are your top cities for a short (two-night) European minibreak with a short, easy and cheap journey to the city centre from the main airport?

Nice/Monaco

The airport is very close to the city and there is a train all along the Med coast.

Oh I want to do this later this year

Any views on what Belfast is like as a wkend away from London G or H? At 50 I’ve travelled around the world but I’ve never been to NI.

@peacefulpeach I like Belfast for a weekend away - you can fly to Belfast City (Belfast International is quite a way out of the city). There's the Titanic museum, St. George's market for crafty stuff and loads of delicious food, we did a black taxi tour which is a tour where the driver will be a 'guide' and it takes you to some of the places relevant to the political history and show you some murals etc.; we went to the Metropolitan Art Centre (MAC). As someone who studied Geography at Uni, I wanted to see Giant's Causeway - but you'd need to do a tour unless you hire a car and it would take a whole day out of a weekend away.

There are lots of Game of Thrones tours too but we didn't do any of that.

I loved Venice. And arriving via water taxi is fantastic - like being in a James Bond film!

Love Venice for this. Best arrival and departure ever.

Krakow is 25 mins in the bus to the city centre for a whopping £1.20

Prague short uber ride

Zurich - 15 mins on the tram

Paris!! I adore Paris. Stay in St Germain then just walk walk walk. Super easy by Eurostar and I think the metro goes to Orly or CdG

It depends what you want from your mini break and how far you are from your home airport! Helsinki airport is about 20-30min bus/car ride from the city centre and also now has a direct train, which is probably a bit quicker. Tallinn airport is 10min from the city centre. Both cities have excellent galleries, museums, green open spaces and, if you're going in summer, lovely beaches. They are easy cities to walk around and have excellent public transport.

I second other people's suggestions of Venice and Barcelona. Brugge is also nice to walk around, especially if you have a sweet tooth and go during a chocolate fair. Dublin airport is a short bus ride into the city centre which, again, has galleries, great places to eat and some great hotels etc. I loved Paris, but I wouldn't recommend the Eurostar.

Geneva

I second this! It's about 15 mins by train from the airport to the city centre, plus if you're staying in a hotel in the city you can get free public transport for the duration of your trip, including the airport transfers.

We flew with easyJet last year, and return flights with hand luggage only cost a total of £120 for 2 adults.

It was out of season though (November).

Done loads of these. Seville is my fave.

It's a long way out though isn't it. Like Arlanda/Stockholm - easy but a long way.

Arlanda to central Stockholm takes 17 mins though, I do it regularly with work. Very easy!

Elsbetka · 11/01/2026 19:54

Ooh absolutely loads of responses here, thanks so much everyone!

@BIWI - ideally Manchester but could go to BHX or EMA, or even LTN for the right flights. Would also consider the Eurostar although we're about 1h50 train journey from St Pancras.

Pisa you can walk from airport to town. Not a lot to do though but good value food and drink p

Pisa is looking good date/flight time/cost at the mo, and I like the sound of good value food and drink! We'll be taking our kids (early tweens) and their fave thing on hols is just to eat at local restaurants.

@ERthreesounds like a useful website, thank you.

@CrystalSingerFan looks absolutely beautiful!
