"Convenient" European minibreaks?

What are your top cities for a short (two-night) European minibreak with a short, easy and cheap journey to the city centre from the main airport?

OP posts:

Cologne. Short flights to Bonn airport from Stansted. Transfer by train to central Cologne was 15 mins.

Walkable city. Not too big to feel overwhelmed with choice.

Any views on what Belfast is like as a wkend away from London G or H? At 50 I’ve travelled around the world but I’ve never been to NI.

It's really good - loads to do and super-easy to get to from Heathrow (not sure from Gatwick). If you fly BA you go to Belfast City airport which is only about 15 minutes away from the main new interchange at Grand Central, which is very central.

I think if you go from Gatwick you might end up at Belfast International which is somewhat further away.

Venice (boat straight from the airport)
Porto (airport on the metro)
Both amazing places for a weekend.

Stockholm-great size for 2 nights. 18 minutes on airport train. Stay in radisson blu next to station. Loved it

It felt a lot longer than 18 minutes when I went there but maybe it wasn't an express.

CrystalSingerFan · 11/01/2026 16:00

Santiago de Compostela is lovely and the transfer was super easy. IIRC. Plus Northern Spain is underrated, IME.

Lots of obvious attractions, but if you go please don't miss the triple-helical staircase at the Convent of Bonaval! It's a wonder and a marvel. (Not my pic.)

look on the complete city break site it lists the top cities close to airports. Top of the list is Gibraltar, quick walk over the runway and you are in town.

Isn't the boat expensive? We got a bus . DH is pretty tight! Then we actually stayed on the lagoon side.

Valencia is a lovely city for a weekend break and a quick metro ride from the airport.

The water taxi is expensive, you’re right. But it’s worth it! Maybe use it to arrive, but get the bus back when going home.

From Edinburgh Copenhagen is very quick and easy and there's an short metro train journey into the centre of the city. Having said that it's a long drive to Edinburgh airport for me so not actually a weekend break. And some of the options people have listed would be a two flight journey for me from my nearest airport so I'd suggest you look at what flights there are from your closest airport(s) and make your choice from those because you want convenience at both ends.

Geneva

The Netherlands, less than an hours flight. Airport with easy train access to great cities. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Hague, Leiden to name a few.

Love flying back, due to the time difference, landing 15 minutes before you took off!

We go for the weekend, Friday tea time (16.30)/early Saturday morning out (06.00), late Sunday back (21.30). No work missed!

We fly from our local airport. Tiny and feels like parking at the supermarket! No long wait prior, very quick boarding as the planes are small. Brilliant.

The private water taxis are expensive but not the water buses 🙂

Krakow is a 15 minute quick train ride from the airport to the city centre.

About €170, but so worth it. You can also book in advance, so no need to queue.

Piggywaspushed · 11/01/2026 16:40

I asked because the OP mentioned 'cheap'! To be honest we were fine with the bus bus but it was probably a bit circuitous.

Tallin old town is gorgeous, great restaurants and perfect for a weekend. About 2 hours 45 flight - but only took us 2h20 on the way there.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/01/2026 16:54

Nice/Monaco

The airport is very close to the city and there is a train all along the Med coast.

Apols - not a cheap destination

Teesside!

Mydadsbirthday · 11/01/2026 17:04

Definitely Malaga. Train into the centre from the airport in 15 mins, costs a few euros. Fantastic city, it has everything

Whyherewego · 11/01/2026 17:07

Absolutely recommend Lille, Brussels, Bruges etc if you are able to get to Eurostar.

Otherwise Ljubljana is lovely. I think Venice is overcrowded but nice if you can at a quiet time. I also like Toulouse for a city break.

FourForksSake · 11/01/2026 17:14

Girona, which is often cited as an airport for Barcelona, but it is a lovely city in its own right. 10 minute taxi ride.

Marseille has an express bus.

Madrid is on the metro.

Fizbosshoes · 11/01/2026 17:17

Agree with pp, Vienna was pretty easy, as is Paris if its convenient to use Eurostar I went to Barcelona for a long weekend but it was so long ago I dont remember the connections between airport and city
