I love my bareback Quebec boots but they are only mid calf. Otherwise your looking at wellies or dubarry long boots- I’ve tried loads of imposters and they don’t seem to last.

Ohpleeeease · 10/01/2026 00:21

I think it’s waders you need, OP!

Are dubarry boots actually waterproof? I’ve heard mixed reviews about them, I’m fed up of my trousers getting soaked and heavy, so want room tuck my trousers as well.

It’s not that bad, just a sensible pair of comfortable waterproof high boots that aren’t wellies, I got pair of riding style leather boots from Next that are comfy, warm and can tuck jeans, trousers in. BUT unfortunately aren’t waterproof and took a few days on a radiator to dry… never again!

Yes Dubarrys are waterproof, well the Galway ones are at any rate.

Vetoncall · 10/01/2026 01:57

Dubarry Galways are definitely waterproof. I'm on my 3rd pair now, each pair has lasted a good 6ish years of pretty heavy use.

Ohpleeeease · 10/01/2026 02:56

I also have Galways, they are really long which I love.

ALittleBitofWensleydale · 10/01/2026 06:22

My Dubarrys were waterproof but I much preferred my wellies. A good pair of Aigles would be perfect for walking wet fields. They are comfortable, supportive and have excellent tread.

muddyford · 10/01/2026 06:27

I wear tapered trousers to walk the dogs so I don't have the problem of the cuffs getting wet and muddy. My wellies are Aigle for wet fields, but I use ordinary walking boots (Scarpa) and Hotter Mist which are Goretex-lined as well.

countrygirl99 · 10/01/2026 06:33

You could try walking gaiters.

DecafSoyaLatteExtraShotPlease · 10/01/2026 06:47

Are different trousers an option? I wear my old skinny jeans for such occasions with a pair of walking boots (salomon quest)

PrincessFluffyPants · 10/01/2026 06:49

I have Bareback Quebec in navy, happy to recommend them. I'e had them for around a year, have pretty much worn them every day and they are still going strong. I bought some Renapur balm stuff to keep them conditioned and water tight. The Quebec are like wellies for length but in leather and more stylish and the brand do longer styles too.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 10/01/2026 07:08

Second vote for gaiters. A lighter cover than high boots and come down over the top of your footwear to cover the opening. Good against thorns too.

Snowingtoday · 10/01/2026 07:38

You are just giving a great illustration of why wide leg trousers are just so impractical.

whatwasthatnoise · 10/01/2026 07:45

I've got a pair of Muck boots
They might be too much like wellies though. They're welly-like across the foot but neoprene up the legs. Comfy, good grips, long lasting, space to tuck in trousers and completely waterproof.

Silverbirchleaf · 10/01/2026 07:46

I wearing walking trousers which repel water and dry off quickly, and walking shoes (Wolfskin).

Lovely dog and a lovely smile.

Freesiapleaser · 10/01/2026 07:50

I have a pair of welligogs which are similar to dubarrys and slightly cheaper. They've been going 12 years, been resoled and I went in the sea in them last week and they were fine. They get waxed once a year. They are definitely rough now and i keep eyeing up various replacements / additional sensible boots.

vanillalattes · 10/01/2026 08:22

Those trousers are so impractical 🫣 leggings and proper walking boots ads all you need.

Mumsknot · 10/01/2026 08:26

I use walking Aigles. I fought wellies for ages but when we lived in the countryside I eventually lost my battle and got some and it totally changed my walks. They are neoprene lined so really warm too.

Pedallleur · 10/01/2026 08:29

Walking gaiters have been the norm for years. Elastic material that goes between the boot and mid calf. Obviously straight trousers would be better underneath. Plus fours/walking breeches have/are popular in the shooting circles. But gaiters would be my first thought

NippyNinjaCrab · 10/01/2026 08:47

Muck boots, Le Chameau, Ariat boots. I would invest in some waterproof trousers though, wear over leggings or base layers. Depending on what type of dog walks you do there are lots of choices. Make sure whatever you choose are Gore tex.

SirChenjins · 10/01/2026 08:54

Muck Boots - absolutely brilliant things. I have a pair of arctic ones that see me through the worst/coldest weather - can't recommend them enough. Change the trousers as well!

travailtotravel · 10/01/2026 08:56

Surely you just need gaiters?

Boots be better as my work boots were ruined after that walk, gaiters will just keep my trousers dry which is half the battle but not my boots :)
