Would you travel on the trains today? Please advise as I don’t use trains often.

Really want to get to Bristol today from Liverpool for a family do. So it’s not essential but important iyswim. Lots of trains are cancelled around the midlands which is where the changes are.
Do I risk getting the first train and hoping I get there, or will it be carnage? My ticket is valid for certain ones. I don’t get a train enough to know the situation.

Is go with what the train operator says about the specific trains I was planning to travel on

It's totally journey unique as far as I've seen on SM my local area is pretty much as normal but I don't live in Liverpool or Bristol 😀

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 09/01/2026 07:57

I don't know the whole picture but I live in Bristol and there's no snow here, just rain. So I guess the closer you can get the easier it's going to be.
Best of luck!

Taweofterror · 09/01/2026 07:57

You can check for disruptions on the national rail website. It'll tell you about service disruptions and you can put on specific journeys to see if there are delays.

NCTDN · 09/01/2026 07:59

I can’t get much info from the National rail website tbh. There are some running but as so many are cancelled I’m guessing they’ll be rammed full?

I wouldn't if you're changing in Birmingham. We've had 7 inches of snow and very few trains and buses are currently running.

DeathMetalMum · 09/01/2026 08:02

I'd sooner be on a train than driving in snowy conditions. I'm up near Liverpool way and no snow in sight just rain, if that helps.

FannyCradocksDoughnut · 09/01/2026 08:04

Realtimetrains.co.uk
Have a look on this website. Put in the station you'd be travelling from, it tells you what has been cancelled etc. A brilliant website!

Untailored · 09/01/2026 08:05

I would just go and see how you get on. Take a book and a relaxed attitude. If you only get so far, just turn round and come back.

I wouldn’t worry about ticket validity, when trains are cancelled and delayed those sort of restrictions are lifted and you can just get on any train.

momahoho1 · 09/01/2026 08:06

No snow in Bristol

That’s my thought atm but worried I’ll not have the correct ticket.

Does it look like it’s sticking or do you think it will clear by lunchtime?

@NCTDN not sure if these help you at all, updates from council about train travel in the West Midlands.

@NCTDN images are under review hopefully won’t take long, it is a list of cancelled service and a list of main services that are running.

It already has! Snowed heavily overnight.

NCTDN · 09/01/2026 08:11

It’s already cleared?

People on 'Advance' tickets don't lose their rights if the Operator cancels the service @NCTDN . You will be allowed to travel on another train.
Although if lots of services have been cancelled it might be slow/busy. Have water/snacks with you and take a good book!

NCTDN · 09/01/2026 08:16

So if I have a ticket with lnr but it’s cancelled, can I get an avanti train?

OP posts:
FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 09/01/2026 08:17

I’m in a Leeds to Manchester train, it’s running on time (in itself unusual), roads were clear to get to the station. Feels like a normal travel day.

Candleabra · 09/01/2026 08:20

Assume you’re going via Birmingham? Every train to bham out of lime street is cancelled this morning (or terminated at Crewe).

NCTDN · 09/01/2026 08:22

Yes Birmingham so would need to change at Crewe as things stand.

OP posts:
Biscuits4 · 09/01/2026 08:28

If there's been cancellations on your route, the trains could well be crammed full. DD tried to travel during bad weather a few weeks ago, there'd be cancellations and her train was running late. She just about managed to squeeze onto train, no chance of getting to her seat and just decided she couldn't cope with being so squashed.

Having said the above, I guess you don't know until you try and get on a train. If you can comfortably get on and it's not running too late already, then go for it. Not sure about Bristol, but we're in Gloucestershire, had snow last night which has melted and it's certainly no icy in our street.

Candleabra · 09/01/2026 08:28

There aren’t any direct trains from Crewe to Bristol. So you’d need to change at Stafford or Wolverhampton and most (if not all) of those are cancelled too.

Beanzmeanz · 09/01/2026 09:20

I don’t know about the bit between here and there but here in Bristol it’s completely normal not a flake!

Hiphopboppertybop99 · 09/01/2026 09:23

Download the train line app. Put your stations in and it will tell you if the trains are running. Idk which Liverpool station you're traveling from or which Bristol station you are traveling to but after a quick search from Lime Street to Bristol city centte some of the trains are cancelled.

Madcats · 09/01/2026 09:49

Have a look here for advice: https://www.lner.co.uk/travel-information/travel-updates/

I frequently get delayed on GWR, needing to swap trains or routes and I tend to contact them via a direct message on X.

The problem area at the moment seems to be Birmingham where there are trees on the line and overhead powerlines down as well as snow.

The main train lines are likely to be a priority so hopefully the Birmingham area will be up and running later today.

If you really do need to travel today maybe have a look at Flixbus or National Express.
