Would you travel on the trains today? Please advise as I don’t use trains often.

Really want to get to Bristol today from Liverpool for a family do. So it’s not essential but important iyswim. Lots of trains are cancelled around the midlands which is where the changes are.
Do I risk getting the first train and hoping I get there, or will it be carnage? My ticket is valid for certain ones. I don’t get a train enough to know the situation.

Yes Birmingham so would need to change at Crewe as things stand.

No, you would need to get another LNR train unless a ticket acceptance agreement is in place between the two companies

I’m in a Leeds to Manchester train, it’s running on time (in itself unusual), roads were clear to get to the station. Feels like a normal travel day.

My son has just got to Manchester from Leeds too. He says there is no snow in Leeds but he's seen a little in Manchester

I've just looked at Cross Country again (the bit that would get OP from Birmingham to Bristol)... They are hoping to reopen the line at around midday, subject to satisfactory "route-proving" (which I think must be getting an engine to drive slowly along the lines to check that there are no obstructions).

Last time I looked it was about 5 or 6 degrees where I am (about 10 mile from Bristol) and it doesn't look as if any rain is on the way.

(Keeping my fingers crossed that DD can get up to Leeds on the train tomorrow as we really don't fancy the drive).

Thanks for all the advice. I’m changing at Crewe to Birmingham hopefully!

There’s so many cancelled ahead for later when everyone is saying places are clear. I’m assuming they don’t get reinstated.

If the leg between Birmingham and Bristol in Cross Country, then it WILL be rammed, if running at all. Cross Country are grossly overcrowded at the best of times, so will be carnage if there've been cancellations as all the passengers will be squeezing into whatever trains are running. You'll be lucky to get on one and even luckier to get a seat!

Correct, I don't think I've ever seen a train reinstated once it has been marked down as cancelled. Whenever there's disruption, both trains and staff end up in the wrong place and it usually takes most of the day (or overnight) to get trains back where they need to be for the next day. Staff (drivers, guards etc) are often passengers on trains to get to where they need to be, so if the earlier train is cancelled, the staff can't get to their starting point to run their train, etc. If a train for later today is already marked as cancelled, it's because the operators know that either the train itself or the staff it needs won't be in the right place to run it.

If you can get past Birmingham you should be ok. Maybe check the GWR app?

Edited

GWR reckons there is a XCountry train leaving Bristol at 12:30 to Edinburgh (so via Birmingham). There is a train coming down from Worcester too.

I got there! Spent hours at Crewe along with the world and his wife. Seems that everyone was directing people to Crewe only for trains to be cancelled one after the other if they were due to stop at Birmingham.
but I found an alternative route and made it Grin

Just randomly came across this thread! Just wondering if you're aware of delay repay if you don't travel by train often? If you're more than 15 minutes late you get money back, I think over 2 hours late you get all your money back. I don't travel by train often anymore, but we had issues a few months back where lots of trains were cancelled, and my sister told me about it. Really simple to claim and you get your money back quickly. Glad you made it too 😊

NCTDN · 15/01/2026 20:34

I’ve got it back thank you!
