I was at the hairdressers yesterday small back street everyone knows each other.
Subject came up about books, a couple of people say that they read more than one book at
the same time. One for the day and one to read in bed. One of those people is a librarian.

I love reading but can only read one at a time. Is it normal to have 2 on the go.

One on my kindle, one easy reread in the bathroom, one main book, and occasionally a second one if I’m struggling with the main one. Also I sometimes leave a book I’m halfway through at my parents to pick up again next time I visit.

Generally no, I’ve never read more than one at a time.

But at the moment I’m doing the les mis readalong that is on a thread on here. It’s a very short chapter a day and will take the full year. So I’m doing that alongside whatever other books I will read throughout the year.

No. I fully immerse my self in the story so much so that I can barely concentrate on real life let alone another book.
I basically exist within the protagonists life until the book is finished!

I've generally got one fiction and one non-fiction on the go at any point.

I do, and I often have another couple of books that I'm listening to on audible as well. Different books for different moods.

I do have adhd though, so it's completely normal for me to have a million tabs open in my brain all at once.

Exactly the same here and fellow adhder.
I have about 6 on the go at the moment, mix of physical, ebook and audible. An auto- biography, a non fiction history book, s couple of fictions in slightly different genres. I need a variety and it depends on my mood. I quickly get through them.

Three.
One handbag book for buses
One for the living room
One for in bed.

WinterFrogs · 08/01/2026 14:06

Audiobooks in the car and occasionally via pillow speaker if I can't sleep.
I'm trying to develop better reading focus so I'm doing one book/kindle at a time apart from the Audiobook

TheDandyLion · 08/01/2026 14:17

Yes, actual physical book at bedtime or at home. i use an ereader on the train/bus commute and listen to audiobooks when cleaning/gardening or doing something else at the same time.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 08/01/2026 14:20

Yes. Currently my book club book, plus another novel of my choice. I also have been listening to the Sherlock Holmes stories on BBC Sounds, read by Hugh Bonneville. I don't know if that 'counts' as I'm listening rather than reading.

Nourishinghandcream · 08/01/2026 14:24

I often have three books on the go.

Bedside, read every night.
Bag, goes with me where ever I am so I can dip in & out.
Living room, on the table beside my easychair for whenever I have a "moment".

ScarletWitchM · 08/01/2026 14:27

I currently have 3 on the go. One is an easy read chick lit type book, one is a translated from Russian to English book which I find interesting but exhausting to read for more than a few chapters, & the last one is a crime thriller which is a bit slow of the starting block so I read a few chapters in bed or read them & switch to another for a while

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 08/01/2026 14:47

I used to-I'd have an upstairs book, a downstairs book and one for the bus. Sadly these days I struggle to finish one.

FriendlyFlame · 08/01/2026 14:54

Usually. I'm currently reading A Truce That Is Not Peace by Miriam Toews and Helen Garner's collected diaries, and Mansfield Park in the bath.
