I was at the hairdressers yesterday small back street everyone knows each other.
Subject came up about books, a couple of people say that they read more than one book at
the same time. One for the day and one to read in bed. One of those people is a librarian.

I love reading but can only read one at a time. Is it normal to have 2 on the go.

I don't know about normal, but I do it. I have something easy for bedtime and something chewier for daytime. Sometimes I have three on the go, for example when I was doing a Mumsnet Readalong I would be reading one chapter of that book at a slower rate and would need something else for the gaps. The trick is to make sure the books are very different.

Tarahumara · 08/01/2026 11:38

Usually I have a kindle book and an audible book on the go at the same time. At the moment I'm also doing a Mumsnet readalong so that's three!

WhatIsTheCharge · 08/01/2026 11:39

Yeah, it’s common for me to have a “good” book on the go on my Kindle (currently reading a True Crime book) and a shit, smutty romance novel on iBooks on my phone.

I can only read one book at a time. I'm very jealous of those who can have multiple books on the go.

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 08/01/2026 11:42

I've usually a fiction and non fiction on the go at the same time. Currently I'm reading Radium Girls and Mad Honey.

HoLeeFuk · 08/01/2026 11:43

Yes, often three. My nan was the same and my mum could never understand it in either of us.

readingisallowed · 08/01/2026 11:43

@GrumpySparklerme too.

How is Radium Girls? I've been recommended it before but not got round to it.

LoveRules · 08/01/2026 11:45

Three books here. One in my ears whilst driving or walking/chores, one at bedtime - paper copy and an additional non-fiction one for lunchtime at achieve my personal development/career goals.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 08/01/2026 11:45

I do, and I often have another couple of books that I'm listening to on audible as well. Different books for different moods.

I do have adhd though, so it's completely normal for me to have a million tabs open in my brain all at once.

GreenChameleon · 08/01/2026 11:48

I rarely read only one book at the time, even as I kid I was normally reading two books.
I always carry a book in my bag to read when I'm out of the house, and also have two or three more that I'm reading at home. The reason is mainly that I enjoy switching between fiction and non-fiction.

ThreeSixtyTwo · 08/01/2026 11:52

I can have one new fiction book per format (audio, paper) and language (native, English, one similar to native). I tend to choose the language depending on the type of the book - popular books in English, deeper and more thought provoking in native, and books where I want some distance in similar to native.

It's excellent. Very emotional at times, I've cried at points and been furiously angry at others. Definitely worth a read.

Witchymadwoman · 08/01/2026 11:56

On holiday, I often have a fiction and a non-fiction on the go at the same time. Especially if the non-fiction is not an easy read.

Hoolahoophop · 08/01/2026 11:59

Yep, currently have The Anxious Generation on audible for the commute, then A Day of Fallen Night on my Kobo, I also have a paperback romance I forget the name of on my bedside table, and I am reading Matilda with my youngest DC.

petitpasta · 08/01/2026 11:59

I always have a kindle book, a physical book and an audio book on the go. Sometimes more.

Currently have a physical almanac on my bedside table and a copy of Christmas Chronicles for the MN readalong. Also have Hagstone on the go on my kindle and the colour of Bee Larkham's murder on audiobook so currently have 4 on the go

JohnBullshit · 08/01/2026 12:00

I usually have at least three on the go. The third is in the car, though, and depending on how much waiting time I have, it could take me months to finish.

MagicSpaceTurtle · 08/01/2026 12:05

Yes, one fiction and one non-fiction usually but over Christmas I did read a novel and a book of short stories.
Currently reading A Tale of Two Cities and Moonlight Express - Around the World by Night Train. I’m also listening to David Suchet reading Dickens Ghost Stories on BBC Sounds although I struggle a bit to concentrate on Audiobooks

EnterQueene · 08/01/2026 12:15

I read one book and listen to one book - I never have 2 written books on the go at the same time. I also make sure my reading book is different to my audio book.

It is odd, I usually think of my written book as my 'real' book and my audio book as something to fill the time. But on occasion I have been pulled into a fabulous audio book and end up focusing on that more than my written book. They both feel very different to me, so not really like have 2 books on the go

WonsWoo · 08/01/2026 12:28

I’ve usually got two but never two fiction at once unless I’ve got an audio book for dog walks but that’s pretty rare.

I’ve recently discovered something people online call reading in pairs. It’s reading a non fiction that enhances your understanding of the time/circumstances of a fiction you’re reading. It’s not for every book but for instance, I am currently reading The Scarlet Letter and also a non fiction about Puritan settlers in New England.

SmileyMoonset · 08/01/2026 12:36

I always have one book on kindle and one book on audible at any one time.

If I’m reading a non-fiction book on kindle I’ll switch to fiction at bedtime.

BertieBotts · 08/01/2026 12:44

I always have. To me it's the same as when you watch TV, esp before streaming was common, you don't pick one series and not watch anything else until it's over, you can follow multiple storylines at once.

ManxDi · 08/01/2026 12:52

I read 'quiet books' (normal, print books to real humans) in bed. I have a different 'loud book' via CD in the kitchen stereo and another different 'loud book' MP3 in the car. I also use my Shokz headset at the gym with a different story (usually BBC sounds, Sherlock Holmes/Dickens Ghost stories etc).
I can occasionally take a little while to remember where I'm up to and what the story line is, but I like murder stories so they're reasonably interchangeable.

JamesClyman · 08/01/2026 12:57

Yes.

ChessieFL · 08/01/2026 12:57

I usually have at least 3 on the go at any time, in different formats. A physical one to read at home, a kindle one to read in bed at night/when travelling, and an audiobook for when I’m cooking/walking etc. Then I might have a readalong book (e.g. Dickens) and/or a non fiction on the go as well.
