Flannels/face cloths and loo roll. How do YOU use them?

I'm performing a community service by starting this thread, to take the heat off the one about Xmas guests behaving oddly. Who knew that we all needed to explain our washing/wiping routines in such detail!

So I'm a flannel person. I like to wash my face with warm water, and it makes less mess doing so with a clean flannel so that the sink area doesn't end up looking like bathtime at the zoo. No blindly reaching for the towel with soap in your eyes!

I draw a veil over how I wipe my bum, I'm happy with my toilet routine and do not feel the need for high-pressure steam cleaning.

Do you consider using a flannel to be the height of civilisation, or an oddity from the 1950s? Do you expect to find one (or a stack of them) in the bathroom when you are a guest somewhere?

Are you excited to share details of how you prefer to use toilet paper after doing a plop? (I wouldn't normally ask this, but it seems to fulfil a need on MN)

I only wash my face in the shower so just with my hands.

I have no need for a flannel although I keep one in the bathroom for DC because they still require occasional additional face washes to remove food.

My parents love a flannel and always bring them when they come to stay.

A link to the thread that was derailed by information about flannels/face cloths and loo roll habits... for anyone interested who might not have seen it:

I use the Liz Earle cleanse and polish cloth on my face. I don't supply flannels for visitors. I do supply plenty of toilet rolls, how visitors (or myself) use them is no-one else's business 😅 .

travailtotravel · 05/01/2026 09:58

I have gone back to flannels, having thought for years they were a pointless aberration. But they're very good for my face and neck ...

No comment on loo roll. I use it.

ManyPigeons · 05/01/2026 09:59

I use a flannel morning and night for the same reason you do… warm water, wash off cleanser. Usually I do pits and bits after and then put the flannel in the basket to be washed.

I bathe at night so this washes off any night smells.

The flannel also provides some manual exfoliation which just using hands does not.

A Muslin cloth used in this way counts as a flannel. I said what I said, those are the rules.

I am a face cloth lover and supply them for guests who rarely use them, wipes and pads are always in the bins!

Each bathroom is full of loo roll, I would however love a “bum gun” on our lavatories.

Nourishinghandcream · 05/01/2026 10:02

I have two flannels on the go at any time.
Face flannel by the bathroom sink for washing my face.
Body flannel in the shower for washing my body.

My OH has exactly the same but as we have separate bathrooms, there is never any danger of cross-contamination.😆

GiantTeddyIsTired · 05/01/2026 10:02

I wash my face in the shower/bath with a buff-puff (there's a blast from the past! - I rediscovered them recently) and facewash.

BUT I have a stack of flannels (cheap white ikea ones, so I can really hammer them with a hot/bleach wash) that I keep in the bathroom cabinet for if I do want to wash my face in the sink, or if I need a quick stand-up wash for whatever reason (period flooding for example)

I would like a bum-gun - having used them very happily when living in tropical climes, but now I live somewhere on freezing cold well-water, and I'm too mean to pay for a thermostatic one (and wouldn't want to sit there waiting for the hot water to come through) so I haven't prioritised it. Although, having said that, jetwashing my nethers with close to freezing water would certainly get me moving in the mornings, so perhaps I should reconsider.

edit: and loo roll is plentiful (although it pains me as we are on a septic tank, so my son's profligate usage costs me twice) because there's always a big box delivered by who gives a crap so I never have to actually remember to buy it.

I don’t use a flannel on my face but I do on my torso and I use an exfoliating mit on my arms and legs as I have dried skin, my face I use soap and water and dry on the towel. Towel flannel and mit gets washed after every use and they’re only used by me, my husband has his own towel and flannel

Applepe · 05/01/2026 10:06

I use a flannel or a muslin cloth for my face. Great for taking makeup off with a quick face wash.

MouseCheese87 · 05/01/2026 10:07

The only time I've used a flannel was at my grandma's house as a kid. I've always just used my hands to wash myself. I think if you're showering once or twice a day then toilet roll on its own to wipe is fine but it's not really that hygienic. As thorough as you may wipe it's not as clean as washed with soap and water.

modernminimalist · 05/01/2026 10:08

Flannel for face
flannel for shower for bits and bum, shower puff everywhere else

Keroppi · 05/01/2026 10:09

I've always used flannels as I oil or double cleanse and love a hot flannel to wash my face off.
I also use flannels/washcloths to wash bits and pits with in a different style to the face ones (but mine are all black) I also washed the kids bodies with them or a sponge so they had their own colour
When I have a guest staying I do give them a flannel just because my spare/guest towel bale are nice white ones 😆

Loo roll I use for the loo lol but I also clean the toilet with it and flush it down because I hate using a sponge or cloth for that and when I briefly worked as a cleaner we used it as easily accessible!

as an aside I recommend Wype, it's a toilet gel, you put it on your lop roll to wipe with and it's much cleaner and soothing as has aloe Vera in. Definitely cleaner and nice for kids as similar to the toilet wipes but actually flushable. I also use it as a travel wet wipe, squeeze some on a tissue when needed

BeardedBarley · 05/01/2026 10:16

I use a clean flannel to double cleanse my face daily.

In our guest bathroom, I provide a box of ‘Clean Skin’ face towels which are disposable.

We don’t use flannels or sponges in the shower.

I agree, I think Liz Earle was very clever rebranding flannels as a muslin cloth. Especially as a muslin cloth is nowhere near as effective as a flannel!

Unless I've dribbled food accidently, face washing is only done in the shower two or three times a week. I don't use flannels.

bloodredfeaturewall · 05/01/2026 10:34

flannel & soap are sooooo much better at removing make up than any wipe or micellar water.

no comment on loo roll use...

readingisallowed · 05/01/2026 11:03

I use a flannel on my face.
Don't have visitors unless it's the grandchildren.
Loo roll is my business.

Justchillinhere · 05/01/2026 11:15

There's always clean flannels in the bathroom, his n hers, we both use them and take them on holiday, they enjoy the sea air

Dogaredabomb · 05/01/2026 11:42

I'm afraid I mentally correct muslin to Muslim every time and my phone just tried to autocorrect it then. Wet muslin and muslin squares just gives me a millisecond of confusion 😂

Dogaredabomb · 05/01/2026 11:44

I went to the loo recently somewhere unfamiliar and there was no loo roll but a teeny little watering can. Luckily I had a packet of tissues with me.

Dogaredabomb · 05/01/2026 11:47

As to flannels we have a ridiculous amount of them. Hanging in a bag on the back of the bathroom door and all use several a day, once only. I also cut up raggedy towels so that we have disposable ones for travelling. The habit was picked up from living in America.

SwedishEdith · 05/01/2026 11:57

Always use a flannel. Use in place of cotton wool pads if using any kind of make up remover. But, usually, just use very hot water, soap, and wash off and exfoliate with a flannel. Don't have overnight guests but French hotels and BnBs always supply those mitten flannels.

EsmaCannonball · 05/01/2026 12:04

Ok. Here goes:-

I call them flannels, not facecloths.

I am a fan of flannels. I find sponges, etc. unhygienic and hands alone unable to cause the friction you need to get clean. I also have one of those long-handled brushes and a pair of those scrub mitts (which I wash after each use). I also use facial-wipes (but never put them down the loo).

I have a lot of flannels and only use them once before washing them. This does create a lot of laundry.

Because I am particular about these things, each person in the house has their own colour-coded flannels and we do not share. Even the dog has his own flannels (yellow, if you want to know). The cat is self-cleaning.

I do not expect hotels to provide flannels and would not use one if they did. If I could afford unlimited luggage, I would probably bring my own towels on holiday. When on holiday I just use hands for washing or one of those small wooden hand-sized brushes.

I would not expect someone hosting me to provide flannels and, again, I would not use them if they did.
