Flannels/face cloths and loo roll. How do YOU use them?

I'm performing a community service by starting this thread, to take the heat off the one about Xmas guests behaving oddly. Who knew that we all needed to explain our washing/wiping routines in such detail!

So I'm a flannel person. I like to wash my face with warm water, and it makes less mess doing so with a clean flannel so that the sink area doesn't end up looking like bathtime at the zoo. No blindly reaching for the towel with soap in your eyes!

I draw a veil over how I wipe my bum, I'm happy with my toilet routine and do not feel the need for high-pressure steam cleaning.

Do you consider using a flannel to be the height of civilisation, or an oddity from the 1950s? Do you expect to find one (or a stack of them) in the bathroom when you are a guest somewhere?

Are you excited to share details of how you prefer to use toilet paper after doing a plop? (I wouldn't normally ask this, but it seems to fulfil a need on MN)

I'm afraid I mentally correct muslin to Muslim every time and my phone just tried to autocorrect it then. Wet muslin and muslin squares just gives me a millisecond of confusion 😂

Well, according to Wikipedia it takes its name from Mosul in Iraq and was widely produced in India, so you're not wildly off mark!

The Wiki page includes this picture of a "Woman's white muslin dress with tiered flounces, Europe, c. 1855." I just cannot quite imagine doing ANYTHING wearing that. Good job takeaway kebabs were not a thing back then!!

I went to the loo recently somewhere unfamiliar and there was no loo roll but a teeny little watering can. Luckily I had a packet of tissues with me.

I think I would burst into tears faced with this.

Flannels/face cloths for second cleanse of double cleanse. Use twice and put into wash.
loo roll … the same way as everyone else I guess?!?

whatsit84 · 05/01/2026 12:50

But I wouldn’t expect a flannel as a guest, would just manage with face wipes and cleanser washed off with water.

boxofbuttons · 05/01/2026 12:52

I have a basket with about 20 flannels in because I use a new one each day to take my make-up off with a hot cloth cleanser. I don't use them for washing my body (I have a shower puff thing, which I believe is seen as the height of grimness by MN).

Ritaskitchen · 05/01/2026 12:52

Flannel. Provided for guests as well. They are told where the extra flannels are and to help themselves

Sgtmajormummy · 05/01/2026 13:00

Wash mitts here, which I find a bit easier to handle.
When they’re worn out they serve as dusters, again easier to clean bannisters or carved pieces.

Single use in the evening to enthusiastically scrub away at face and neck, and carefully wash behind ears (I wear glasses).
Shower puff for arms and legs. No sponges.

Toilet roll, at least a 4-pack for each toilet. Average use (I checked!) is 2/3 rolls a week.
Pocket tissues in a cupboard in the hall.

GroovyLobster · 05/01/2026 13:12

Hurrah for the new thread!

I use one flannel a day - single cleanse in the morning, and double cleanse at night (first round is an oil or balm here), and then into the flannel wash bin it goes! I don’t have a set time for showering so either of these occurrences could be at the sink or in the shower. I use a shower scrunchie for my body, my flannels are face only.

I was really surprised in the other thread by how many people don’t use them - but then I do like my skincare and follow various people who talk about it online. I feel like when Liz Earle became popular many many years ago now a lot of people took up the flannels and it was the new normal.

And my flannels are a variety of fun colours, but never white! Life is too short for that hah.

I was also shook by the comment that said ladies reach between their legs to wipe, literally no. Thankfully all the other comments denying this had me sighing in relief!

Lavagir1 · 05/01/2026 14:02

Has anyone conjoined the 2 topics yet and admitted washing their bum with a flannel? 🤣😂🤣

I'm somewhat concerned that there seemed to be folk on the original thread who didn't seem to realise that they've still got a choice to wipe front to back (or not) regardless of whether they are reaching back or between their legs.

On the other thread, there were some people who would never use a flannel on their face because it might have been used for you-know-what.

I haven't used a flannel since I was a kid and haven't seen one in anyone's house or a hotel either (apart from American hotels, they're obsessed with them)! They smell and grow bacteria unless you wash them after every use 😝 never had any visitor ask for one either so they must all be finding alternative means to wash their face. I just splash water in my face and rub facewash into it then splash it off.

MoonlightMemories · 05/01/2026 14:18

I've always used a flannel...for as long as I can remember! I have very sensitive skin and my face is a mix of oily and dry, so I just wash it with really hot water, no chemicals/soap and the flannel when I'm in the shower and sometimes in the morning too (though always do a quick splash with hot water if not using the flannel). I do take a flannel and a couple of small towels with me if I'm staying somewhere else, just incase none are provided for me.

I haven't seen the comments on loo roll in that other thread so I don't know what you mean by that - I use it as you regularly would, maybe a bit more than your average person as I have a funny stomach at times and also keep wet wipes for when loo paper isn't quite enough, but those go in a bin next to the loo.

AhBiscuits · 05/01/2026 14:22

I can't explain why, but flannels give me the ick. I use my hands to wash my face and one of those puffy things in the shower for my body.

Otterinthewater · 05/01/2026 14:26

Wash my face in the shower every morning with a gentle cleanser. Before bed I love to get a soft facecloth absolutely roasting with near boiling water, wring it out, and hold it on my face for a minute. Pure bliss.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 05/01/2026 14:30

If I don't have a flannel I find I'm floundering to wipe the sleep from my eyes and I need to exfoliate the dry skin I always seem to have behind my ears. Splashing around with your hands doesn't cut it then I end up using the towel to do the job of the flannel (badly). #teamflannel here.

Beachtastic · 05/01/2026 10:20

I agree, I think Liz Earle was very clever rebranding flannels as a muslin cloth. Especially as a muslin cloth is nowhere near as effective as a flannel!

I have the muslin cloths to use with the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish, but now also use a Liz Earle flannel with their Superskin Cleansing Balm.
I always use a flannel in the shower to wash my ears (gets in all the folds) and likewise on my ‘bits’! Then use those scrunchie things to wash my body.

Ineedanewsofa · 05/01/2026 14:35

DC uses a flannel for face washing (and ONLY face washing!) I use the Face Halo things (the Primark version) as they are smaller and I can fit more in the wash at any one time.
We all use the dreaded shower puff/loofah things, I do put them through the wash on a weekly basis though.
Toilet paper - my business is MY business although now have to go and read the other thread to know what @Lavagir1 us referring to…

Nevergotdivorced · 05/01/2026 10:00

I am a face cloth lover and supply them for guests who rarely use them, wipes and pads are always in the bins!

Each bathroom is full of loo roll, I would however love a “bum gun” on our lavatories.

I never knew "bum guns" existed until a week ago when we were in an Indian restaurant in Manchester - had to Google them to find out what the heck the strange attachment was for.
Don't you end up with wet clothes?

We have one and it’s amazing. I’d never be without now. You don’t get wet clothes because you usually pull them down to use the toilet 😉

WonderfulSmith · 05/01/2026 16:07

I use a clean fresh flannel every day to take off my make up in the evening. I then put it on the side of the bath and use it in the shower in the morning.

I did overhear a woman in Boots the other day asking a staff member if they had reusable make up wipes. I felt like telling her that she wanted a flannel and could nip into Primark to pick some up.

OriginalUsername2 · 05/01/2026 16:31

I like cheap, old, rough flannels for exfoliating everything when I’m in the shower. I grab a clean one from my own personal pile of them when I grab my towels. I squeeze out the water when I’m done and it goes in the laundry with my dirty clothes.

We don’t share any towels or flannels in our house, we all have our own. I’d take my own things if I was staying in another persons home, you never know someone else routine.

Memory unlocked - I think this is my DP’s doing as I don’t remember caring about these things when I was younger. Many years ago he pointed out that you never know what’s been on someone’s balls in someone else’s bathroom 😂

rightoguvnor · 05/01/2026 16:43

I use a puff and Hydro-boost facial wash in the shower.
But once out and having cleaned teeth, I use a clean flannel from a pile on the window sill to apply toner to my face. I find this has a good exfoliating action too. While the toner dries I’m drying myself, doing my bits and bobs, then I apply moisturiser.
So I don’t have any disposable wipes or cotton pads in the bathroom which is better for the environment and my pocket, and I have a pile of clean flannels.
The flannel I have used for the toner is then used for a quick wipe round of the tap and sink before it goes into the wash.
Nobody else uses that bathroom so I can have it set up as I please.
When travelling I take my own flannels.

Greenwriter76 · 05/01/2026 19:11

Cleanse face with cleanser and flannels muslin cloth every night. Cream cleanser on cotton wool pad in morning. I also have a reusable cleansing pad which removes make up by wetting the pad with water.
I currently have 7 hot pink flannels from Ikea. I also give my dd (6) a flannel for face & in bath.

This sounds absolutely terrifying to me. I'd be as distressed and confused as @Dogaredabomb faced with a miniature watering can. What if your aim was haphazard and the entire room was sprayed with microplops?!?!?!?! I can imagine being there for the rest of my life, trying to clear up invisible particles and just making things worse, like Dr Seuss's The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.

I'm 39 and always used face clothes/flannels! I was in disbelief at dh's family who didn't use them. I thought they were a thing for us all, a necessity of sorts, like a hand towel. I've been known to dip corners of bath towels in water when they're not available! I now take them on holiday with me, as some hotels are not to be trusted!

Also how do you wash your face properly in the bath without one? There's nothing better than laying there with a warm flannel over your upper face and eyes!
