London transport sport museum

I am planning to go with some friends to the transport museum. However it costs 25 pounds.\nAnd you have to purchase a yearly pass which means you can go multiple times in the year. I do not want to go several times in the year so I don't see why they are forcing people who have been to pay twenty five pounds for a yearly pass. I am going to contact the museum tomorrow and speak to someone and complain.Because I think it's awful. 2.\nPeople that were going with me have now decided that they don't want to come because of this , and I don't blame them

Are you (were you) planning to come by train?
Because you might be able to get a 2 for 1 deal. So £13 entrance instead - which is fairly usual for a fee paying museum.

MuseumAssistant · 04/01/2026 22:28

My friend works there and said they get complaints all the time but because it doesn't affect their visitor numbers, they don't really care.

NuffSaidSam · 04/01/2026 22:32

£25 is around the usual price (or even lower end) for attractions in central London.

Don't look at it like you're being asked to pay for an annual pass. The entry fee is £25, but you can also visit again for free as many times as you want! Bargain.

It's a good museum but I didn't know the price had gone up that much.
I just checked - it is on the National Rail 2 for 1 list so you could save money that way.

NannyR · 04/01/2026 22:33

The admission price seems in line with other London attractions. I recently paid around £30 to visit St. Paul's cathedral and £18 to visit Dennis Severs house when I visited London a couple of months ago.
There are plenty of other free museums and attractions in London.

ErickBroch · 04/01/2026 22:42

That’s not really unusual for London museums or visitor attractions. Have you checked if they offer any concessions such as Universal Credit/benefit tickets for £1? If it applies to you. A poster above also suggested 241 offers with some train lines.

you can email but you’ll just get an automated response - the price covers the costs of running, it’s not for profit.

averychoc · 04/01/2026 22:48

They are not forcing you to buy an annual pass though, the ticket price is for a visit and the fact it is valid for a year is a bonus.

Have you checked all the concessions to see if you qualify? You can get a ticket for £1 of you are on UC or ESA among other things, plus discounts for disabled people and carers. Worth looking at.

Don't waste your time complaining though.

We were in London a month ago (travelled by train, too) went to the Transport Museum but didn’t go in as it seemed overpriced. Looked around the gift shop and thought their merchandise was overpriced too. I saw several people reach the entrance and back off again while we were there.

They may still get a lot of visitors but it definitely puts some of them off.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/01/2026 22:53

If you travel by train you can buy 2 for 1 tickets.

you don’t even actually need to travel by train - you just have to fill out the form online.

Never been checked.

It is a great museum if transport is your thing. I used to take DS. We even went the depot at Acton.

MeouwKing · 04/01/2026 23:18

Expensive, but a museum that I like..

U have to use the pass within a year. I dont go more than once

If it's trains you like and you're near Swindon then the train museum there is cheaper.

If you get UC or any benefits you can get a ticket for £1.

But you haven't lost anything because £25 is the cost for one entry (in line with other London attractions). You pay for one entry, you get one entry.

The free visits for the following year are a bonus. No good for you because you don't want to go again obviously but you haven't lost anything.

HelenaWilson · 05/01/2026 01:10

I was once talking to a steward at a historic house. She said they have to judge pricing/visitor numbers very carefully. If they price it more cheaply, they get more visitors, but then it becomes uncomfortably crowded, or there are queues, and there's increased wear and tear, which means there are higher maintenance costs, and greater possibility of damage to the historic building itself.

The big attractions probably set their prices to produce the income they want from the amount of visitors they can cope with.

I did that for Hampton Court recently. Made a huh difference to the total cost.

Last time I went to the BTM it was £15!!

minipie · 05/01/2026 01:14

I doubt complaining will achieve anything. They will be aware that some people won’t like the pricing structure and they’ve done it anyway. Would you call any other company and tell them their prices are too much??

Yes I would complain to any company

I wonder if they set the price at £22, with the opportunity fir an annual ticket at £27, hiw many would choose each type.

Westfacing · 05/01/2026 08:08

The Transport Museum is fantastic, so many different aspects to it, and well worth the money and the price is on a par for a similar attraction.

From what I understand calling it 'yearly membership' is something to do with claiming tax relief - it's a technicality.

Westfacing · 05/01/2026 08:13

To be honest you don't even need to be a big fan of Transport to enjoy the museum!

The history of the engineering, the design of Tube upholstery, the Art Deco posters, and logo designs - all fascinating stuff.

Schoolchoicesucks · 05/01/2026 08:19

The entry price is £25 for one visit. Being able to come again within the same year for free is just an extra that some (though I imagine not most) visitors can do.
The discounted ticket with a train ticket sounds like a good option, but ultimately it comes down to whether you are willing to pay the ticket price for your visit or not.
They have heard this "complaint" multiple times and decided this is the pricing model that works for them.

LittleBearPad · 05/01/2026 08:23

If you don’t want to pay £25, don’t go.

The free returns are a bonus; it would still cost £25 without them.
