What age will you be mortgage free?

DH thinks most people are mortgage free before they are 50. I think most people are paying off their mortgage into their 50s and actually a lot of people in their 60s.

So just a quick poll to see who is more realistic here.

Me 54
DH 58

This is due to overpaying

We met 22 years ago and this is our 3rd house

Being mortgage free gives a secure peace of mind position

But it is not always financially efficient- say you have 10k that would could invest for 10 years it could earn more than the interest you’d save from paying mortgage early

GRCP · 04/01/2026 13:09

Me 58 and DH 60, but we are planning on overpaying and aiming for 52/54, which is in 10 years. In reality it’ll probably fall somewhere in the middle.

kirinm · 04/01/2026 13:10

70s. Ideally it won’t be 70s but we are in London and had to borrow a lot.

If we stayed in this house, we would be 48 when it’s paid off. But, this was always intended to be a starter home. Property is very expensive where we live and a longer term home was (and still is tbh) out of reach for us.

As much as we would have loved to have bought a 3 bed semi with a garage from the start it just wasn’t doable. So I’d imagine we will likely have a mortgage for a lot longer than 48 if we ever do manage to afford to buy a bigger home.

10K · 04/01/2026 13:21

We downsized to be mortgage-free in our late fifties.

NoTouch · 04/01/2026 13:33

We were 45 when it was paid off (12 years ago)

25 year mortgage taken out when we were 28 and paid off 8 years early. Converted from original endowment mortgage to a capital mortgage. Moved once, kept same term each time. Quite a few things were all paid directly into mortgage over the years and helped pay off early

Missold endowment compensation
PPI compensation
Endowment maturing
2 small inheritances (£10k each)
Some additional overpayments each year when we had “spare” cash
Redundancy (put chunk of it into mortgage)

snowymarbles · 04/01/2026 13:37

69 - I bought my ex out at age 47 and had to extend term to make it affordable. In theory I hope to retire about 63 and pay remainder off from pension lump sum.

sundayvibeswig22 · 04/01/2026 13:39

We became mortgage free when we moved location a few years back. We moved from an expensive city to a less expensive area, though house and location was an upgrade. I was 37 and dh was 42.

Datchydoo · 04/01/2026 13:40

I was mortgage free at 37

wannanamechange · 04/01/2026 13:46

69

DisappointedD · 04/01/2026 13:48

About to take out a 24 year mortgage at 42 & 51! We may get some inheritance and / or make over payments in the future but as it stands 60s / 70s.

cinquanta · 04/01/2026 13:52

I was 47. We could have paid it off years ago but it didn’t make financial sense.

PrettyGirlsMakeGravy · 04/01/2026 13:57

We are mortgage free (DH 44, me 53), but only because we rent. We'll never be able to afford to buy anywhere. That ship has definitely sailed now.

SENsupportplease · 04/01/2026 13:57

Currently 40 with a 31 year mortgage 😭 it’s the only way we could afford it when renewal came round - jumping from 1% to 5% interest plus a redundancy!

PlanBea · 04/01/2026 13:58

I was 37 after buying at age 32, it was due to an inheritance. I'd rather have a mortgage tbh. Without it we would have paid it off at age 50, or a bit earlier with the random overpayments we were doing.

Monvelo · 04/01/2026 13:59

Currently mid 60s but we will work for 60.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 04/01/2026 13:59

65, which is when I will get my pension. DH will be 64. I am 50 now.
We don't live in the UK and things are a bit different. We have always both been relatively low earners but some inheritance meant we managed to buy at 40 because it was kind of the last chance to buy and be able to take a 25 year mortgage so we would go into retirement mortgage free.
Since then we have changed to a fixed rate of 2% and here that means fixed forever, until the end of the term. So there's no real incentive to over pay tbh. I would only bother over paying if I came into money or had got rid of the other higher interest debts we have, that we have because we are both low earners and my business collapsed during covid and it took me about a year to get a salaried job.

overthinkersanonnymus · 04/01/2026 13:59

About 60 if we can over pay a couple of hundred a month. That’s so depressing 😂

ClassicStripe · 04/01/2026 14:01

My friend paid hers off at 38. I’m very envious. I’ll be about 725 by the time I do it.

HelenHywater · 04/01/2026 14:02

About 69/70 I think. I had to remortgage on divorce.

I will probably downsize before that though.

I'm 55 and most people I know are paying off their mortgage around 60.

Arthurnewyorkcity · 04/01/2026 14:02

Without overpaying id be 46 but aiming to have it gone at age 40

MuddyDogWalk · 04/01/2026 14:07

We paid off our mortgage in our early 30's, all possible due to DH working very very hard and very long hours every Winter.

We did then take out a loan to pay for an extension 17 years ago, it will be completely paid off in 16 months time. We will be 55.

whattheysay · 04/01/2026 14:08

We paid off our first mortgage 5-6 years ago I was about 44, dh 47 then we sold and bought another house mortgage was for 113K we have 10K left on it now which we have so will pay off at some point soon, I am now 50 dh is 53

pinkperm · 04/01/2026 14:09

Paid it off at 34 but this is far from a forever home. Will likely need to take out another mortgage in the next few years when the time is right to move.

chipsticksmammy · 04/01/2026 14:10

I’ve had a few chances to be mortgage free, I was 37 the first time but we bought a bigger house.

I could also have done it at 41, but I built an extension instead of moving as the rates made sense to do it that way.

The next point was at 44 but we have offset the rate. We make more than we pay in mortgage interest. I’m also waiting now to avoid an early repayment penalty.

So it will be March 2027, I’ll be 47.
