What age will you be mortgage free?

DH thinks most people are mortgage free before they are 50. I think most people are paying off their mortgage into their 50s and actually a lot of people in their 60s.

So just a quick poll to see who is more realistic here.

Have upgraded several times. 51.

Late 30’s when I became mortgage free. It felt massively liberating and I feel so much more secure. Mortgage was £1.8k a month (with the overpayments) and now funnel that money into investments (need to be stricter with it though!)

What do you plan to do when you retire? Will your pension be sufficient to carry on paying rent?

I am disabled and had to give up work ten years ago. DH earns about £30k. We don't have any pensions. When DH retires - if he does - it will be state pension only. God knows what we will do.

Me and DH paid our off in our mid 50s, inheritance cleared the outstanding balance.
Otherwise we would have been in our 60s as we had extended mortgage/ moved a few times.

I presume you'll be entitled to housing benefit (or whatever it's called nowadays) so that would help somewhat. Might be worth enquiring to the council about over 55 accommodation as well, once you get to that age. All the best.

55/58

We still haven't got a mortgage - husband and I both work but still can't afford one unfortunately. 45 and 50. Doubt we ever will now! Privately renting.

Tobycarverysquad · 04/01/2026 21:14

We will be 65 and 63 if we carry on as we are (18 years time). However, kids will all have finished school/uni in 5 years time so we are planning over paying and would like it cleared a lot sooner.

Current house technically early 60s but we plan to downsize before then to be mortgage free and release equity.

QuietLifeNoDrama · 04/01/2026 21:28

We should be 62 but hoping to make some over payments in a few years to get that closer to early 50s 🤞🏻

ChocAuVin · 04/01/2026 21:32

Divorced (financial abuse as well as physical and emotional) and started from less than zero at 40.

Due to be paid off by 68 but will be waaaaaay before that if I have my way!

ViciousCurrentBun · 04/01/2026 21:40

DH and I were late 30’s but we bought in 1999 and house prices doubled where we lived in 2000.

Cushylife · 04/01/2026 21:50

1st one to buy our house, 2nd one to renovate and 3rd one to buy a second home. So I think I might be 70 years old by the time the last one gets paid off.

Eatinpeachesonthebeaches · 04/01/2026 21:52

Next month
Me 61 DH 55. 4 years earlier than planned.
