PIP

PIP
I've been diagnosed with ADHD last year.Ive always had dreadful anxiety and bouts of depression and I'm awaiting ASD assessment.
After diagnosis I was sent a link to apply for access to work which is great as I've always worked but can no longer drive.
I then discovered PIP isn't means tested and I can still work.
I've applied and I'm in the process.
I've had text saying I'm being looked at by medical professional.Anyone had a result without an assessment?
I'm not overly worried even tho I know the process is rigorous.

Meant to say anxiety severely affects my life and restricts what I can do.

Has anyone gone through the process.
I know there is still a stigma to benefits despite this one not being means tested.

I think it depends on if they agree you can’t do certain activities. Is it just driving you struggle with?

Octavia64 · 04/01/2026 09:04

I have pip.

i believe they speak to most people who apply. Some assessments are face to face and some are phone. Mine was phone.

i don’t know anyone who got it without an assessment but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen

THisbackwithavengeance · 04/01/2026 09:13

Of course they’ll assess you. If they gave out PIP on the basis of someone saying they were a bit anxious, then everyone would claim it wouldn’t they? 🤷‍♀️

DinoLil · 04/01/2026 09:15

I receive PIP. I had a 2hr assessment on the phone when I first applied. My renewal was September last year, I sent in 142 pages of medical evidence from the past 3yrs since the original award but still had to have another 2hr telephone assessment.

Thevegetarianchef · 04/01/2026 09:17

I have panic disorder had bouts of agoraphobia eating disorders, can't travel alone due to anxiety and have zero friends.
My ADHD makes me forget to eat myself.Over Christmas I fed my family and organized everything then realized after they had gone I barely ate and lost weight!!.
It's 40 years like this documented via gps.

You can get PIP for ADHD? Hardly surprising then that the queue is round the block for assessment/diagnosis....madness...

Thevegetarianchef · 04/01/2026 09:19

Thosbackwithavengance there is a huge difference between bit of anxiety and not being able to do much because of it.

Yes because severe ADHD causes terrible anxiety😡not just fearful but refusal to speak or use transport despite tablets, support to encourage and adhd medication.

l’d love my 19 Dd to have a normal life and do normal stuff. But she’s disabled by her disability.

She’s on full PIP, I really hope this pisses you off.

Thevegetarianchef · 04/01/2026 09:21

No you can't get PIP for ADHD per day it's how the neurodevelopmental issues affect you.

I have known awards made without the person being assessed directly. As an HCP I’ve been contacted by the assessors for a report.
However these have been people where there’s a fairly high level of need with personal care and there are services involved in supporting them. If you’re in this situation then you may not need an assessment.
But the key to PIP is evidencing the help you need for ordinary daily activities and the best way to do that is through reports from people involved in supporting you

Thevegetarianchef · 04/01/2026 09:24

Thank you arseinthecoopwindow.
Mine is so bad I have to sit in the back of dhs car due to my anxiety and it's made me walk miles to work due to hating public transport.

Maviaz thank you.

My son has never had an assessment but then we sent reams of evidence. He can’t walk/talk, is tube fed, has epilepsy and is on oxygen etc. DLA since he was a baby so clearly qualifies.

As PP says, majority of people will need an assessment due to how a condition affects the individual. Not the diagnosis.

Thevegetarianchef · 04/01/2026 09:28

DinoLil sorry to hear that.
I guess it's good to know anyone that gets it fully deserves it if that makes sense.

My ADHD makes me forget to eat myself.

I'd count not eating yourself as a bonus! (Couldn't resist. The incorrect use of 'myself' is one of my biggest bugbears)

There's loads of online resources to obtain information about PIP. Try www.benefitsandwork.co.uk Also look for PIP specific forums as you won't be judged on those forums.

All the best with your assessment.

BeKhakiReader · 04/01/2026 09:37

I have it for severe Long Covid. I did have an assessment in person, but it was fine and I was awarded (only minimum daily living, but it pays for treatments like acupuncture). For my renewal, I didn’t have an assessment as was awarded.

Thevegetarianchef · 04/01/2026 09:39

Yes it's laughable that I can be starving and ignore the signals.
I also have shockingly low self esteem so will feed others before myself.

Bekhakireader I'm requesting a video call as if I could travel I wouldn't need it.
I want to be able to put the heating on as I'm here if not working mostly wearing layers with my coat on.

I just had a paper assessment and a nurse called me for a quick 5 minute chat.

Lougle · 04/01/2026 09:46

It's variable dependent on the quality of the evidence you supply and the confidence of the assessor that they can accurately score you from it. All 3 of my children got enhanced PIP for both elements via paper assessments, but I had over 150 pages of evidence from various professionals for each of them, so not much to be gained by seeing them.

AdoreTheChaos · 04/01/2026 10:19

I had a two hour assessment on the phone. I only submitted the application, letter confirming my neurological diagnosis and the details of my neurologist and nurse specialist. I presume they contacted them as I received a full award for both parts for ten years.

JamesClyman · 04/01/2026 11:01

My DW got PIP without an assessment, but your condition needs to be very serious for this to happen. It also means she is not subject to regular reviews.

However, if you can still work, I doubt if you will qualify for this

Minty25 · 04/01/2026 11:08

They can do a paper based assessment but you would need to have sent in a lot of medical evidence and it can take a lot longer. I have a work client I have been helping with PIP who has been waiting since August for a paper based assessment for adhd. We sent in loads of evidence - psychiatrist reports etc.
If you can cook for others, wash and dress yourself etc you may not qualify. You might score a couple of points if you need someone to motivate you to eat on the majority of days but do you have medical evidence to show this ?You may get some mobility if you cannot go out alone but that would have to apply most of the time ( more than 50% ). medical evidence is the key to a successful award especially as they have thousands of applications for these conditions daily.
