One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

Ooh which brand @Crucible?
My DSD is after some; I’ve shared with her the fact that I think they’re a crime against style but she has heard great things about them, so if you don’t mind sharing then I’ll pass the info on to her - including how hard they are to clean!

Washing soda and boiling water is quicker than bleach for getting tannin off mugs.

I do Pink Stuff paste on a damp cloth and rub the inside of the cup then a good rinse . It's a tiny bit abrasive but not damaging .

I am going to sort through some clothes and clear some space for my coats some of DH things can go in the attic )

I did two bloody major tasks (for me...) today and I feel very smug and organised now having put them off for ages.

I have a medical condition that now and then sees me in A+E and often admitted. Today, at last, I packed a "grab bag" and stashed it away just in case. Pjs, underwear, socks, toiletries, hair brush and stuff, dressing gown, slippers, spare chargers for everything I bring with me, and so on. I found a redundant backpack on wheels that I was going to donate, and it's perfect. Big tick for that.

Second job was similar. I don't know about you folk, but honestly I am so bad at organising myself for trips away it is a joke. So today, I got a storage box, and put these things in it, ready to grab when the next trip beckons (hopefully!)
Passport, essential toiletries, spare make up (only use powder foundation and blush, and lip, nothing else), backpack, crossover bag, and all the other bits and pieces that we need on holiday apart from the clothes and shoes. I just have to stick my hand in the box, and all the stuff is there. Whew.

Last job for this weekend if I feel up to it, is to charge up the cordless drill and put a new bolt on the back gate. The existing one will do, but I need to do this. On the list.

Good luck with all your work. This is a great thread. x

Had a good one today. Moved upstairs bookcase down to the lounge sorted out all our books. Took 6 large bags to the charity shop and put all the books back in nice and tidily.

Your fridge could be a blocked drainage hole if you haven't already tried that. Unblock it with a bit of warm water vinegar and bicarb and a pipe cleaner or straw. A small long wire mini bottle brush works best though. If not you'll need a repair or replace.

Sorry, quote fail! That reply was for @ruthietuthie

Ruthietuthie · 17/01/2026 19:47

@CherryRipe1 . This is really helpful, thank you. I wonder where the drainage hole could be? The bottom of the fridge also fills first with water then that becomes ice. It is a persistent problem. And it isn't an old fridge, just a rubbish one.

Thanks @ChocolateCinderToffee. I don't have washing soda in the house, but I'll look out for it next time I'm in a supermarket or hardware shop.

Afternoon SJ done :

DD went through some make-up and toiletries .
Some to Charity Shop if sealed/sellable
Some Out of Date to bin
A bottle of face wash to me ( DD not a fan of foaming wash) and an eye-liner pencil of mine that she borrowed ..she returned it .

Some leggings in recycle
Sorted my jewellery and need to clean some earrings .

Need to find a top I bought but might be in DH wardrobe (or DS/DD/the small room rails )

Tomorrow - we have Half Price Electricity so I'll wash and dry the bedding

EducatingArti · 17/01/2026 21:23

SJ for today. Completed a form to do with my mum's estate and got it ready for posting.

Undercovers · 17/01/2026 21:41

Today's SJs was paying massive invoices i've had for weeks, that's a weight off my mind!

The drainage hole is usually at the very bottom, in the middle, at the back . It's like a V shaped channel, however many of the modern fridge freezers very annoyingly have a concealing panel over the drain hole and you have to use a flat screwdriver to prise the clips off to take the back panel off AND undo some wires clipped in to each other with a silver connector around the top area (switch the fridge off first)! Once it's off you'll see the hole at the bottom. It's amazing how much horrible gunk and mould gets in them particularly the uncovered types. You can defrost behind the panel too if you have one, the one I had ice could sink the Titanic.

Ruthietuthie · 17/01/2026 22:03

This is REALLY helpful, @CherryRipe1, thank you. Between your advice and a Youtube clip for my particular brand of fridge, I now know where it is. And yes, you are right, there is a panel over it, but I am certain I can manage the very minor dismantling. I am adding this to my SJ list. It will save so much frustration (frozen salad items that I was planning to use for dinner, but now they are a frosty mush, bread that needed to be thrown as it was sodden with what seemed rather grubby liquid, that had appeared from nowhere). I am so grateful.

It's these. They're incredibly warm, they're also very wide. If you can take the barefoot zero drop nature of the boot, they're perfect. I have wide difficult feet. You can feel rough ground through the sole a little, but that's intentional in barefoot styles. So good to drive in.

Put together my kid’s new bed. He was super happy with it though, so it wasn’t a shitty job in the end ☺️

SqueakyDinosaur · 18/01/2026 00:33

I have a bottle of a supermarket version of Milton which is specially for bleaching tea mugs. It's a satisfying job rather than a shitty one!

3flyingducksarrive · 18/01/2026 02:00

I have been putting it off for a couple of days but have to do it today. We think a lizard has died somewhere in DS's room. The stench in the Australian summer heat is quite something. DH and I went through the drawers and shelves and didn't find it but today I am going to remove everything to see if I can track it down.

DS is sleeping in another room but it's inconvenient. It's also a good chance to go through all his shite and hopefully be able to toss some.

Shred old paperwork today and/or tidy the under sink cupboard.

Does anyone have any tips for easy cleaning the oven door? Soda crystals?

Does anyone have any tips for easy cleaning the oven door? Soda crystals?

Is it glass or solid ?

I have one of those flat razors in a handle ( for cleaning glass oven panels) from Amazon.
I need to sit on a folding stool with newspaper under the door and methodically scrape but it works and so satisfying .
I know the oven door could be removed but would I get it back on?

For the oven floor I use Elbow Grease foam

That link brought up a blocked site warning for me !!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/01/2026 08:58

@70isaLimitNotaTargeti agree but I’d also suggest putting a bowl of water in there at 100* for a bit just to steam the oven muck and soften it all first

My oven has a little indent for water in the floor if I want to create steam for baking (and there's different settings ) I could steam it first .
Thank you Smile

Cleaned the cobwebs from the bedroom ceilings.
Used a v satisfying scratcher tool to deep clean the stair carpet - hoover gets most of it usually but with 2 cats the fur is everywhere. Filled a nappy bag with hair from the stairs and landing!! 🤢
Washing all done and hanging up. Feeling smug at 10.15am (I don’t know why, I will do naff all asks for the rest of the day now) 😂

Top recommendation - also keep a list of things that you’ve done, a list to feel good about.
My to do list just gets longer and messier until I end up abandoning it and starting a new one!

I walked through my house and dictated each area and job to chat GPT - it made me a spreadsheet with room/size/priority....
Does that count as my first shitty job?
77 to go 😂
